Miranda Goshawk's spell journal

This journal was a dusty journal notebook where the thoughts of Miranda Goshawk were written on when she was young.[1]

History

Written and hidden

Throughout her childhood and school years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the then-unpopular Miranda Goshawk had written down the spells she had invented (e.g. the Bat-Bogey Hex) into her spell journal. One day, Miranda lost the book, which she assumed was stolen and hidden somewhere by two of her sisters, Diadema and Romilda Goshawk. Even with all of her efforts and many tries of the Summoning Charm, she couldn't find her journal. Meanwhile, both Diadema and Romilda insulted the book and its owner by saying the former was a mere diary and the latter would never be accomplished in charms.[2]

Nearly a century after the young witch's diary was written and stolen, at some point between the 2008–2009 and 2010–2011 school year, an unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student, Kevin Farrell, and Robyn Thistlethwaite followed a gone-astray Chocolate Frog, which brought them to find Miranda's journal notebook that had been hidden behind spider webs in a quiet bookshelf in the Hogwarts Library. When the three students realised it once belonged to the famous witch who authored the The Standard Book of Spells, they were amazed and surprised.[2]

Unfortunately, just before they began to flip through the pages of Miranda's spell journal and take a glance at the "not-so-glorious past" of the witch who wrote the notebook, the librarian Madam Pince found the three with the Chocolate Frog, became furious and gave them detention as punishment for bringing chocolate into the library.[2][3]

When the time for their detention arrived, however, a group of fifth-year students triggered a Gemino Curse in the Restricted Section, causing Pince to have her hands full. Therefore, she had to let the unidentified student go with a warning.[4] Later, the student sneaked into the almost-deserted History of Magic Classroom, where they met Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, the ghost of Gryffindor Tower. Upon finishing telling the tale of how he attempted to help Lady Grieve and died, Sir Nick left the room. When the student was finally completely alone, they picked up the book and began reading its pages.[4]

Miranda Bat Bogey
The Bat-Bogey Hex, a spell Miranda created out of the desire to make people "shut up and listen"

The book revealed Miranda Goshawk's bitter past, where she was the youngest of nine daughters, and was bullied by her eight mean older sisters, and showed the sorrowful motivations behind each spell she created. Within one of its entries, it said how Miranda's malicious sisters deceived her into believing that the incantation for the Dancing Feet Spell (Tarantallegra) summoned flowers, leading her to unwittingly use it on their grandmother (this incident inspired her to invent the Bouquet Spell). Furthermore, the book disclosed that Miranda authored spellbooks out of a longing to learn magic without all the complications.[4]

Sent and sent back

The Muggle-born student soon became a vivid reader of Miranda's spell journal, where they found loads of useful spells, ingenious notes, and a hidden past of Miranda Goshawk.[5]

At some point later, the student went to the Hogsmeade Post Office, where they sent the journal back to its owner via an owl. However, Miranda later had a barn owl send the book back to the student with a letter, revealing what was unbeknownst to the two Goshawk sisters who attempted to banish the journal back in the last century: the journal book which was found by the three students in the Hogwarts Library was actually the duplication of the real one she wrote.[6]
