You want to know what death is? I'll tell you. Death is the loss of life. Despite everything doctors like me attempt... a patient's life can still fall through our fingers. You think death lies in the apex of science? Anyone with such little regard for life will die by my hand.Akiko Yosano to Motojirou Kajii.
Akiko Yosano is a supporting protagonist in the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise. Rescued by Ranpo Edogawa and Yukichi Fukuzawa from being Ougai Mori's living tool for the second time, she is the third member of the Armed Detective Agency who specializes in the medical field, thanks to her rare healing ability, Thou Shalt Not Die.
She is voiced by Yu Shimamura in the Japanese version (who also voiced Annie Leonhart from Attack on Titan), and by Erica Lindbeck in the English version (who also voiced Naomi Tanizaki from the same anime and Kaori Miyazono from Your Lie in April).
Appearance
Yosano is a 25-year-old woman with a pale skin, light pink lips, magenta eyes, and a dark purple hair styled into a bob cut with a golden butterfly ornament clipped on the left side of her head. She wears a white button-up blouse, tucked into a black knee-length skirt, with puffy sleeves that end in the middle of her forearm, black medical gloves, black tights, and red heels.
At the age of 11, during the Great War, Yosano wore a student medical uniform with a headband and an apron. In the aftermath three years later, she had a shoulder-length worn out hairstyle and wore a white hospital gown with slippers.
Personality
Yosano is a strong and highly determined woman who is willing to heal others with her ability. Given her traumatic war past filled with deaths of many soldiers, especially Tachihara's brother Shunzen, she, as the only doctor of the Armed Detective Agency, highly regards human life, and in retaliation, she is easily angered by those who don't regard it otherwise, as well as Mori's idea to recruit her as a member of the Port Mafia as a means of exploitation of her ability. Compared to her usually graceful personality, she has a sadistic tendency to give her patients "special treatments" involving a chainsaw and other unconventional tools that don't resemble default tools used by doctors.
Background
14 years prior to the main storyline, Yosano used to work at a candy store until she was taken by Ougai Mori to become a student medic in the Great War at Tokoyami Island. Thus, her rare ability, Thou Shalt Not Die, became the greatest asset for healing many dying soldiers who participated in the front lines, especially Shunzen Tachihara, the one who gave her a butterfly ornament. With the Great War intensified, Yosano felt overwhelmed as she was forced by Mori to physically heal more soldiers. Since then, the troop turned against her, and Shunzen committed suicide, being unable to endure the war anymore after being on the verge of death and soon healed many times, leaving her traumatized as a result. Then, as Yosano planted explosives inside the ship, she was arrested and then detained in an isolation facility after the end of the Great War until she was found by Mori, who wanted to use her ability once again. However, with the latter facing a duel against Yukichi Fukuzawa, Yosano was rescued and recruited into the Armed Detective Agency by Ranpo Edogawa, who managed to find her ornament and gave it to her as a means of wanting her kindness over her ability. Crying with happiness, Yosano finally accepted his offer to join the Agency.
Ability
Thou Shalt Not Die - A rare ability possessed by the sole doctor of the Armed Detective Agency, Yosano is able to heal wounds as long as it's either closer to death or being partially dead. However, she is unable to treat minor wounds since she needs to severely injure a person first. Upon the ability's activation, butterflies appear from her body and touch on one's severe wounds to recover them instantly.
Skills
- Physiology and Anatomy Knowledge - As an experienced doctor, Yosano is knowledgable with the human body, especially the time it takes for the heart to stop entirely and determining which body part of the corpse affected whenever she checks through pictures of the human corpses from any crime scene.
- Combat Skills - Yosano is capable of close combat by wielding larger weapons such as a chainsaw to severely injure her opponents or allies to the point she can restore them at full health with her ability.
