General Alatus, also known as Xiao, the Conqueror of Demons and the Vigilant Yaksha, is a major playable character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.

He is the only surviving Yaksha, residing in Liyue, protecting its citizens from any source of evil that may threaten them. He is an Adeptus.

Xiao is voiced by Laila Berzins in the English version and by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in the Japanese version. Matsuoka has also voiced Inosuke Hashibira in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kazuto Kirigaya in Sword Art Online, Bell Cranel in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Sora in No Game No Life, and Ren Amaki in The Rising of the Shield Hero.

Appearance

Xiao is 2000+ and he has medium dark hair with teal undertones, pale skin, golden irises with cat-slit pupils, and similar as a red makeup in eye, and purple diamond on the forehead, and green tattoo around his right arm. He wears a white sleeveless with cloud pattern with lift side of cover. He wear high black collar with golden accents on the necklace around his neck. He wears a black and dark turquoise glove with around his arm with left one having white and gold sleeve with a red lining. He wears baggy dark purple pants, and purple boots overtop. And even a dark green yaksha mask only appear in the face.

Biography

Xiao was originally a Yaksha by the name of Alatus, who were originally assembled to combat the dying curses created by the many deceased gods of the Archon War. A long time ago, he was enslaved by an unnamed God and forced to slaughter countless innocent people before devouring their dreams, all against his own will. Eventually, said God was slain by Morax. Following the deaths of his fellow Yakshas, Xiao became paranoid about other people who he formed relationships with being affected by his accumulated malevolent karma, deciding to settle at Wangshu Inn which serves as a front to excise plagues from Liyue.

Xiao was also one of Ganyu's many mentors, who was particularly strict with her. Refusing to accept her apology for arriving half an hour late one day after scolding her, claiming that he was only there to help her train and not to a mutual understanding between them wasn't something he desired.

Once the Chasm's underground mines were reopened by the Traveler who unsealed all the Bedrock Keys to the cave underneath, Xiao himself was called to the underground mines to find out more about what happened to his fellow Yaksha who mysteriously disappeared, Bosacius. However, he was trapped by the illusory chambers that made up the bed of the pit, which utilized his desire to find the truth about Bosacius and his greatest fear, the current state of his fellow Yakshas, to trap him inside, before escaping with the help of the Traveler, who had followed Yelan to meet Yanfei who went inside the mines to fulfill an old request (revealed to be made by the former) to locate the Fantastic Compass, a legendary catalyst that was utilized by Yelan's ancestors to take on the hordes of Abyssal monsters invading the Chasm alongside the Yaksha and the Millelith, freed him. Also tagging along were Kuki Shinobu and Arataki Itto, the latter being released from prison after the Sakoku Decree was abolished to see Shinobu at her graduation ceremony, who followed Yanfei, their tour guide in Liyue, to the pit. The group nurse Xiao to rest, before setting off to the location of the Fantastic Compass' chamber. Itto injured his head breaking the illusion concealing the path towards the domain with the Fantastic Compass, while Yanfei, Xiao and Yelan enter the compass' domain, where they were led to different rooms based on the needle the compass was pointing to. Yanfei and Yelan face off their greatest enemies, while Xiao confronts the lingering memory of Bosacius, as the gang find their way out. The Traveler eventually claims the Fantastic Compass, which was disguised as their twin. The gang then leave the domain, while Yelan presents what actually happened to the gang; the Fantastic Compass was actually built by a demented Bosacius to be wielded by his friend at that time, Boyang, to take on the hordes of monsters in the mine. Bosacius managed to uncover the underground mines, whilst he and Boyang together lured the monsters into its depths before sealing them with all their energy. Remaining in the depths, Bosacius perished within the depths, with Boyang deciding to stay in the Chasm until his death. Rongzhao however, succumbed to Bosacius' karmic debt when he returned to the surface. Yanfei unseals the compass, possessing both the energies of a human and an Illuminated Beast, revealing that the compass had to be operated by a human and an Adeptus at the same time. Xiao and Yelan activate the Fantastic Compass, and the former uses all his might to send the rest of the group back to the surface. Having sacrificed all his energy in the process, Zhongli calls back to Xiao through a meeting they had before he went to the Chasm, and saves him. Xiao then invites the Traveler to Pervases' temple, where he reminisces about Bosacius, and leaves behind a stone he found in the Chasm as a memory of him.

Trivia

  • He is the first and currently only playable Liyue character to have a single-character name, as opposed to the others' two-character names.
  • He apparently doesn't require sleep.
  • The reason his favorite food is Almond Tofu is because it reminds him of the texture of the dreams he would consume while a slave of the unnamed God, and his love for the dreams' taste in spite of his hatred of having to consume them after killing the people they originated from under said God's orders.
  • Both Dan Heng and Xiao have Spear wielding and air manipulation characters in Hoyoverse.
