Bonino, don't f*cking make me shoot you.Banha arresting Francesco Bonino.
Detective António Banha is a major heroic antagonist in the portuguese Netflix series Turn of the Tide. He is the chief of the police department in Rabo de Peixe, and the father of Bruna.
He is portrayed by João Pedro Vaz.
History
Banha is first seen listening to Francisco, who got a call that said that hundreds of kilos were found in one of the beaches of Rabo de Peixe. A few hours later, 148 kilos of cocaine were ceized by the police, with Banha informing to the local news that what they caught so far was worth 9 million euros and that a kilo of cocaine was worth 60 thousand euros.
The next day, Banha partook in the arrest of Francesco Bonino, one of the two italian mafiosi who caused the cocaine to land on the Azores. Banha is later seen watching the local news about Bonini's arrest. Banha would later interrogate Bonino, where he is able to find out that Francesco Bonino is his true name out of all the identity cards he had.
Banha then asked how much cocaine was on the boat he used to transport the drug, with Bonino telling him that it was less than 500 kilos, making Banha proceed to end the interrogation. Banha would then have a barbecue at his house the next day, where he allows Rafael Medeiros, who was a young man that almost became a member of Benfica, to join it along with his friend Eduardo, unaware that they were planning to give cocaine to his daughter.
After realizing that they were in a barbecue filled with police officers, Eduardo told Rafael to leave the barbecue, but when they were about to leave Banha gave them linguica, since Rafael had asked for it when he came to the barbecue, and told them to bring the container back. After leaving, they cut their deals with Bruna due to her being the daughter of the chief of police.
The next day, Banha partook in the morning patrol to seize all cocaine in Rabo de Peixe, but before doing so, he told Bruna what was going to happen and that there was food on the fridge since he would come back to his house late. Unaware that his daughter had connection to drug dealers, this gave Bruna the chance to call Sílvia and tell her about what was happening, leading to Sílvia to talk with Eduardo and Rafael and hiding the cocaine in the back of their boat before the police could find it, although the police would try to check their boat to no avail and during this, Rafael gave Banha back the container of the linguica the latter gave him the previous day.
Later, due to the judge of Rabo de Peixe ordering them to, Banha released all the people they captured with cocaine. He later celebrated the police's accomplishment of seizing 360 kilos of cocaine in less than a day, and told Francisco to give Paula Frias a glass of champagne, although she refused.
The police would later go with Bonino to see the place where he says he hid all of the cocaine, which had now all disappeared. The next day, Banha is seen making a joke about how a man who had no arms and legs tried to a woman who wanted to have man who wouldn't hit her like her former husband but was also good in bed, which annoyed Paula.
While they were investigating the death of Eduardo's father, Jeremias, Banha joked about how there were so many shoes in Eduardo's house. Later, Paula would try to interrogate Bruna to find out where Eduardo and his friends were, but before she could say much, Banha appeared and demanded her to release his daughter, forcing her to reluctantly agree.
After Paula told the police department about how Eduardo was related to the latest events that were happening in Rabo de Peixe, Banha decided to make a senseless joke about it. Annoyed by this, Paula would ask if he found anything about Francesco Bonino's escape from prison, with Banha then showing the department a message that Bonino gave one of the inmates to insult him before escaping from prison.
When Paula and Francisco tell the police department about how Eduardo's uncle Joe could be related to the case since he works for Feliciano Carrilho, one of their previous suspects, Banha told them how Feliciano was known for making the best tuna in the Azores and was a very respected man. The next morning, Banha would partake in Paula's plan to help Eduardo rescue his friend Carlinhos and stop Bonino and his boss and brother-in-law Monti. Banha was able to arrest Bonino personally, but Monti was able to escape from the police.
Personality
Banha is a relaxed individual, and often cracks jokes during his investigations, which greatly annoys Paula, since those jokes show that he doesn't often take things seriously, even when it is needed. Banha also is shown to possess an affable nature, as he allowed Rafael to his house and gave him linguica.
Banha's relationship with Paula is one that can be described as complicated, as while Banha was shown to respect her and tried to give her a glass of champagne as a way of thanking her for her help in stopping the consumption of cocaine in Rabo de Peixe, but after this, their relationship with each other only went down, as she started to see his constant jokes as an annoyance and were making her work more difficult, and when he saw Paula interrogating his daughter, he stopped the interrogation and left with Bruna before she could find out anything. In a way, Banha's constant cracking of jokes and overprotectiveness of his daughter made the case more difficult for Paula and the other officers to solve.
Despite all of this, Banha would start taking things seriously and helped Paula in arresting Francesco Bonino and trying to arrest the latter's brother-in-law and boss Monti.
