Atour Riten was one of the protagonists of the Star Wars: Legends novel Death Star.
Having fought for the Janissariad - one of the factions of the Balduran Civil War - he disliked centralized government. Being done with fighting he decided to become a librarian and archivist. He worked at prestigious instutions such as the Baobab Archives and the Dorismus Athenaeum on Corellia.
In the years before the Battle of Yavin, Riten was assigned to the Death Star as Chief Librarian. As he had gathered information on a number of prominent officials, Riten suspected he had been assigned there to keep him quiet. Not really caring about politics he focused on doing his job, but used his skills in droid programming to remove the spyware installed by Imperial Security into his assistant droid P-RC3 make the droid ultimately loyal to him. He also put fail-safes in place to totally wipe P-RC3's memory in the event the droid was examined by the Empire. In the habit of collecting various pieces of information he continued the activities on the Death Star. Finding a copy of the Death Star plans, he sent a copy to Dantua, where they were then stolen by Kyle Katarn, who gave them to the Rebel Alliance.
He also became a regular at the Hard Heart Cantina, becoming friends with Teela Kaarz, bar owner Memah Roothes, Celot Ratua Dil, Nova Stihl, Dr. Kornell Divini, Villian Dance, and the bar's bouncer Rodo. He was close to Kaarz, seeing her as a young woman with considerable promise.
Initially apolitical, he became convinced of the Galactic Empire's evil when the Death Star destroyed Alderaan. When a dilapidated freighter was captured by the Death Star P-RC3 was able to deduce that some of its crew had decided to rescue Princess Leia. When he saw Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were heading to the detention level, he used his computer skills to enable the turbolift they rode to stop at Detention Block AA-23 as they lacked the access codes to do that themselves.
Riten and his friends developed plans to escape the Death Star so they would not be part of the evil Empire any longer. As part of the plans they made Riten planned to have P-RC3 tell Imperial controllers that the medical shuttle they were carrying was authorized to leave. However before the group could put the plan in motion P-RC3 was taken by Imperial technicians investigating a series of unauthorized data access events, and when they tried to examine the droid P-RC3's fail-safes caused the droid to wipe all of his memory all the way down to his primary nodes.
Deciding that he had lived long enough, Riten decided to remain on the Death Star and tell the controllers that the shuttle carrying his friends were authorized to leave. When Teela realized the rebel attack could destroy the Death Star, he convinced her not to warn others, feeling that it was necessary for the station to be destroyed. Remaining behind, when controllers were rerouted to him, he convinced them to allow the shuttle to leave.
At peace with his decision, Riten waited out the battle and died when Luke Skywalker destroyed the battle station with a couple photon torpedoes.
