Bluebird (Marvel)

Bluebird (real name Sally Avril), sometimes rendered Blue Bird, is a fictional character and superheroine from Marvel Comics, and a supporting character in Marvel Comics's Spider-Man series.

She was created by the late Stan Lee, the late Steve Ditko, Kurt Busiek, and Pat Olliffe, and she first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 in June of 1962.

Biography

Sally Arvil was presumably born in New York, and became childhood friends of Liz Allan, Peter Parker, Seymour O'Reilly, Jason Ionello, and Tiny McKeever. The group would go to Midtown High School, Sally and the group drifted from Peter, as the group joined the clique of Flash Thompson. Sally would support Flash in bullying Peter, and later rejected Parker when he asked her to go on a date. Sally became a skilled gymnast, achieving blue ribbons and becoming a thrill seeker for fame and pulling pranks on Peter. When the Daily Bugle offered one thousand dollars to anyone who could discover Spider-Man's identity, Sally and Jason planned on getting the money. Though the two managed to get a picture, the two unwillingly helped the superhero stop Electro, being put on the front of the Daily Bugle's article.

When seeing that Peter was already planning on getting pictures of Spider-Man, Sally decided to become a superhero named "Bluebird", and had Jason's father create her weapons and equipment. She then decided to become Spider-Man's partner, and attempted to help the vigilante stop Electro, but her attempt allowed the supervillain to escape. Despite this, Bluebird continued to help Spider-Man by helping him battle Scarlet Beetle, and brought Jason along to be her photographer. Bluebird eventually was beaten by Black Knight's thugs, and Spider-Man told her she was in over her head. This only increased Sally's desire to become a superhero, which resulted in her death when Jason drove recklessly to see Spider-Man fight the Black Knight. Peter blamed himself for her death, but Human Torch gave him some comfort.

Later on, Sally was brought back via the Jackal's cloning process, but her status is unknown due to some whom were brought back by the mad scientist were shown to die from cell degeneration.

Powers and Abilities

Bluebird possessed no superhuman powers and used the following gadgets to fight crime: a retractable rope-line, insulated boots to protect her from electricity, blue paint pellets and ether-filled "eggs". Avril was also a skilled gymnast.

Television

  • In The Spectacular Spider-Man, she was voiced by Grey DeLisle, who voices Daphne Blake in the Scooby-Doo franchise, and also voiced Sam Manson in Danny Phantom, and Frankie Foster in Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
