Chip Potts

Hero Overview

Chip Potts is the son of Mrs. Potts and a supporting character featured in Disney's 1991 hit film Beauty and the Beast and its midquels.

Chip is voiced by Bradley Pierce in the first film, Haley Joel Osment in the its first midquel (with Andrew Keenan-Bolger doing his singing there), Gregory Grudt in its second midquel, Nikita Hopkins and Tress MacNeille in House of Mouse, and Nathan Mack in the 2017 live-action remake.

Background

In his human form, Chip is a young boy who works with his mother in the castle kitchens. Like the other inhabitants of the castle, Chip was cursed. While his mother was turned into a teapot, Chip was turned into a teacup. In the end of the film once Belle and Beast fell in love, Chip was magically reverted back to his human form.

Personality

Chip is a cheerful and active young boy and (like his mother and the rest of the staff) is shown to have a great fear of the Beast's temper, but he is loyal to the Beast, much like his mother and the rest of the castle's staff.

Role in the film

When Prince Adam refused to offer shelter to an old beggar woman due to her ugly appearance, the woman revealed herself to be an enchantress and turned Prince Adam into a hideous beast as punishment. She then turned Chip, his mother, and the castle staff into household objects, with Chip being turned into a teacup. Chip would remain in this form for many years as the enchantress told the Beast he must break the spell by learning to love a young woman and earn her love in return.

Years later, when a man named Maurice arrives at the castle for shelter due to getting lost in the woods, Chip is first seen having tea poured into him by his mother as the castle staff make him feel welcomed. When Maurice drinks the tea, he tickles Chip with his mustache, making Chip laugh. The Beast then storms in and Chip hides behind Mrs. Potts and watches sadly as the Beast grabs Maurice and takes him to the dungeon.

Trivia

  • In his teacup form, he has a chip on his head. As a human, this manifests as a chipped tooth.
  • Although Chip and his siblings are implied to be of British descent (due to their mother's accent and "Potts" being a British name), he speaks with an American accent in the animated film.
  • Because Chip was alive when the Enchantress cursed the Beast's Castle, it is likely that he did not age during that time period.
  • Chip's father was never mentioned in the animated movie while in the 2017 remake, his father was Jean Potts, a resident of Belle's village who lost his memories of Chip and his mother due to the effects of the Enchantress's curse.
    • Also, in the 2017 remake, Chip is portrayed as an only child to Mrs. Potts.
