He is portrayed by Peter Davison.
History
The Fifth Doctor regenerated from the Fourth Doctor after he was fatally wounded by the Master during the incident surrounding the Logopolis. The Doctor initially found himself caught between Tegan's pessimism and Adric's arrogance. Stuck in the middle with him was usually Nyssa, who regularly had to stand as a voice of reason. The Doctor found himself facing threats such as the Monarch, and an encounter with the Mara on the planet Deva Loka. His adventures soon led him into another confrontation with the Cybermen that resulted in Adric's death, leaving the Doctor plagued with guilt, and he swore to never let another companion die on his watch. Shortly after, the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan faced the Master once more in Time Flight, leaving Tegan behind at Heathrow. The Doctor and Nyssa would go onto have many adventures together in Big Finish's audio dramas.
The Doctor and Nyssa reunited with Tegan while facing the return of Omega, and she rejoined them. Later on, the Doctor was joined by another companion in the form of alien noble Turlough. However, Turlough secretly had a pact with the Doctor's old nemesis, the Black Guardian, who sought to use Turlough to kill the Doctor in revenge for the Doctor thwarting his scheme. However, the Doctor trusted him to make the right choice, and Turlough would end up leaving the Black Guardian's side, becoming the Doctor's companion truthfully.
Afterwards, the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough found themselves facing increasingly grisly adventures, such the events of Warriors of the Deep, where the Doctor fought to prevent the Silurians and Sea Devils setting off a nuclear war. While successful, the Doctor was unable to save any of the humans, and was forced to use a poison gas to wipe out the Homo Reptilia, lamenting at the loss of life. In Frontios, despite not being allowed to by the Time Lords, the TARDIS drifted to the latter end of the universe, and the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough were drawn the the planet Frontios, where the TARDIS was seemingly destroyed. The Doctor and the others aided the human from the awful conditions, and found that the Tractators were respnsible. The Doctor tricked their leader the Gravis into rebuilding the TARDIS, cutting him off from the rest, and he and Tegan transported him to another planet, with the expanded universe depicting them having a few side trips on the way back.
Shortly after they would find themselves drawn into a complex web designed by the Daleks, and managed to prevent them duplicating him to assassinate the Time Lords. the Doctor found himself confronting Davros, and was forced to attempt to kill him before he could rebuild the Daleks, but the Doctor's reluctance allowed him to slip away. The Doctor managed to destroy two factions of Daleks on Earth with the Movellan virus, but after witnessing all the collateral damage, Tegan decided to leave him for good, and the Doctor and Turlough were left musing whether he need to mind his ways.
Not long after, Turlough left him when he found a way to return home, the Doctor travelled with American student Peri Brown. The Doctor's journey with Peri would lead both of them to Androzani Minor, where they were infected by Spectrox toxaemia, and became caught up in the conflict with Sharaz Jek. As the situation grew out of control, the Doctor fought to save Peri; with only one dose of the antidote available, he gave her the cure rather than taking it himself, regenerating into the Sixth Doctor.
Personality
The Fifth Doctor was much more refined and gentlemanly than the Fourth Doctor before him, with an affable demeanor and Edwardian tastes such as cricket, tea, good manners and fair play. He maintained his previous incarnations' interest in exploring outer space and history, and had a more warm demeanor towards his companions, doing everything he could to ensure their safety. That being said, the Doctor still retained a degree of sarcasm.
