Holt Farrier

Holt Farrier is the deuteragonist of the 2019 Disney live action remake of Dumbo. He is a former circus equestrian performer who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from World War I. However, while taking care of a baby elephant named Dumbo with his two children, Holt begins to rebuild his life with his family and as a performer in the circus.

He was portrayed by Colin Farrell, who also portrayed Jim Street in S.W.A.T., James "Sonny" Crockett in Miami Vice, Douglas Quaid in the 2012 remake of Total Recall and Ronin in Epic.

Personality

Holt is described as the father of his children Joe and Milly. Ever since he lost his arm during his last war, the ringmaster Max Medici gives him a fake arm as a replacement. Ever since he returned to the Medici Bros. Circus, it is found out that his wife Annie died during the influenza and Holt is also described as a horse rider.

To his help to the circus before it included an animal-free policy, he does not tolerate any animal handler being rude to other animals, such as his moment with Rufus Sorghum. Whenever he sees Rufus doing this action, he stops him from causing any harm to animals.

Role in the film

The story opens with the famous circus-horse rider Holt Farrier’s return from France during World War II. Upon arrival, he finds that the Medici Brothers’ circus has fallen on hard times and, as a result, sold the horses for his show. Ringmaster Max Medici coaxes Farrier to train Dumbo, a baby elephant with enormous ears. When Farrier’s two children realize that, with the help of a feather, Dumbo can use his ears to fly, Dreamland amusement park owner V.A. Vandevere and his star acrobat Colette Marchant offer Medici and his troupe a place at Dreamland in hopes of making Dumbo their main attraction.

Trivia

Holt serves as a human stand-in for Timothy Q. Mouse, filling the roles of best friend and father figure to Dumbo that Timothy filled in the original animated movie.
