Kaien Shiba is one of the characters in the anime/manga series Bleach. He's the former lieutenant of the 13th Division, under Jūshirō Ukitake, up until his death at the hands of a Hollow that also killed his wife, Miyako Shiba. He was the older brother of Kūkaku and Ganju.
He was voiced by Toshihiko Seki in the Japanese version of the anime and Kim Strauss (episode 49) and Dave Mallow (episodes 153+) in the English version.
Appearance
Kaien was a rather tall man with green eyes and short black hair. He wore a standard Shinigami Shihakushō with a lieutenant's badge on his left shoulder. In addition, he also had a tattoo of the Shiba clan symbol on his left arm.
Personality
Kaien Shiba was a very ethical, honest person with a sense of duty. Because he treated all his friends and comrades uncritically, regardless of their rank or social status, he was universally beloved in the 13th Division, both among its ordinary members and aristocrats. In addition, he was a strong believer in the philosophy of his superior, Jūshirō Ukitake, related to fighting: one fights to defend life or to defend honor.
Trivia
- In Episode 49 of the English dubbed anime, Nejibana's release command is "Rankle the seas and the skies". However, when Aaroniero Arruruerie utilizes Kaien's Shikai later, it was dubbed as "Rage through the sea and the heavens".
