Liu Qi is a character in the 14th-century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by the late Luo Guanzhong, and its multiple adaptations. He is the oldest son of Liu Biao. Due to the dispute with the Cai family, he did not become Liu Biao's successor and sided with Liu Bei.
History
Liu Qi is the eldest son of Liu Biao, born to Lady Chen. His younger brother Liu Cong married the prostitute of Liu Biao's second wife, Lady Cai. Cai faction played a great influence in Liu Biao's court and exerted pressure on Liu Biao to make Liu Cong his heir instead of Liu Qi. When Huang Zu was killed by Wu forces, Liu Qi became the chief executive of Jiangxia. I don't know if he himself is asked to be transferred to Jiangxia, or if he is forced to leave Liu Biao's capital.
Liu Biao died of illness, and Liu Cong took over as the governor of Beijing. Soon, Cao Cao's army invaded the province and Liu Cong surrendered. Liu Qi further fled south, and later led his troops to meet Liu Bei who was defeated in the long-term battle. Once Cao Cao retreated to South County, he helped him collect his scattered army.
Later on, he teamed up with Liu Bei and Sun Quan to oppose Cao Cao's army in Chibi. They repelled the enemy by burning his fleet and achieved great victories. Liu Qi was appointed governor of the province of Beijing, and eventually at least nominally took over his father's position. However, Liu Qi died of illness only a few months later and was replaced by Liu Bei.
