Maggie (Home on the Range)

Heroine Overview

Home on the range. Once upon a time, I had a home on the range. But, not anymore. Well, it's no use cryin' over spilled milk. Speakin' of which, that's me. I'm the cow. Yeah, they're real. Quit staring. I'm sort of between homes right now. I lost my old place thanks to the meanest bunch of cattle rustlers in the west; Alameda Slim and the Willie Brothers Gang. Somehow, they stole the whole herd right out from under our noses, and then they disappeared without a trace. After that, poor old Abner couldn't afford to keep the place... or me either, for that matter. Well, no matter how bad things get, there's probably somebody worse off. That guy for instance.Maggie talking about being sold due to Alameda Slim's treachery.

Maggie is the main protagonist of Disney's 45th full-length animated feature film Home on the Range.

She was voiced by Roseanne Barr.

Personality

Maggie proves herself to be an excellent show cow for Abner Dixon. She is strong, bold, determined and selfless, although tough and stubborn. She many times doesn't get along with Mrs. Calloway due to the fact that they are quite a bit different, even though they eventually become good friends.

History

Maggie appears as the narrator at the beginning of the film. She explains that she must be seen after Alameda Slim, the most infamous cattle rustler of the far west, stole the entire herd from Abner and was then assigned to Pearl Gesner in Little Patch of Heaven. Maggie has arrived there and already forms great bonds with all the other animals (aside from Mrs. Calloway) with her show tricks.

When Sheriff Sam Brown arrives and informs Pearl that if she doesn't pay the bank $750 within three days, Little Patch of Heaven will be auctioned off, she immediately gets the idea of the fair to win money to save the farm, and thus convinces Mrs. Calloway and Grace go to town with her to convince Buck, the sheriff's horse, to give them more time.

Arriving in the city, they accidentally enter a saloon when they are frightened by the sounds and get into trouble there. After being thrown out, they finally meet Buck and Rusty, and can't help them, then when Maggie discovers the bounty on Alameda Slim, which is exactly what they need, and decides then go and look for it. Grace is with her, unlike Calloway. Maggie, teasing her, accidentally makes her hat fall, which always sends her into a rage, so a fight starts between the two cows, while Grace tries in vain to stop them and Buck and Rusty enjoy watching them fight in the mud. Sheriff Sam hears this racket and ties Maggie, Mrs. Calloway and Grace to a wagon going to a ranch. While they go Grace sings out of tune and then they pass Maggie's old farm, now sold at auction to a Mr. Yancy O'Del. Maggie reveals to Grace and Calloway that it was Alameda Slim who stole the entire herd, Maggie was the only one to escape him because she was kept locked up in a stable after winning a prize.

As evening falls, the cows hide in the pasture full of bulls, including two named Bob and Barry who are attracted to them, as well as all the other bulls and begin to follow them. Then, as soon as Slim arrives, Maggie and Calloway manage to remove the ropes from their necks, but Grace cannot. They try to attack Slim, but discover how Slim manages to steal all the cattle every time: by hypnotizing them with his yodeling. It also affects the three cows, except for Grace who is stoned, so he rolls the wagon and wakes Maggie and Calloway. After Buck is dumped by Rico, Maggie mocks him before she is called back by Mrs. Calloway, and there Buck decides to capture Slim alone to show Rico his worth. The cows follow his trail, so Buck makes a mess in the sand to confuse them, and then a big storm breaks out and creates a heavy downpour, so that the cows lose the trail. The cows manage to take refuge in a safe place, and here begins a quarrel between Maggie and Mrs. Calloway where the latter accuses Maggie of having dragged them with her only to be able to get revenge on Slim and that it is the worst catastrophe that Little Patch of Heaven has ever had. So they decide that when the storm is over everyone will go their own way. The next morning, when the cows wake up, they meet Lucky Jack, a one-legged rabbit from a lucky charm. Lucky Jack reveals to them that his old house in the mine was stolen by Alameda Slim, so Maggie convinces Calloway and Grace to follow them again to save their farm and in exchange Maggie will leave, they are also joined by Jack who tells her leads to the mine, after impertinently passing Buck and Junior. They devise a plan to capture him, with advice from Grace to wear earplugs so Slim's yodeling doesn't affect them. The cows manage to capture Slim and escape on a steam train, with Slim's accomplices and the buyer in hot pursuit. However, Slim is freed by Rico, a fake bounty hunter secretly working for Slim and the cows are captured. However, Buck, who was shocked to discover who his idol really is, goes back and helps the cows escape. Maggie and the others use the locomotive to follow him and manage to reveal Slim's identity to the sheriff and Pearl, who are both shocked that the Mr. Yancy O'del who is buying the farm is Alameda Slim, resulting in his arrest and the farm is saved by the prize money.

When it seems that Maggie is gone, Mrs. Calloway and Grace become sad and say nice things about her, but Maggie suddenly reveals herself in front of them after hearing those things and decides to stay, with Calloway agreeing. Mrs. Calloway then allows Maggie to wear her hat if she wants, and Maggie lives a happy life in her new home with all the other farm animals. She is last seen dancing with the other farm animals celebrating the rescue and reopening of Perl's farm.
