Mako is a second-year No-Star student at Honnouji Academy who becomes Ryuko's best, and only, friend as soon as the two meet. She is a complete and utter airhead whose odd and overly-energetic antics never cease to baffle everyone around her. Nevertheless, she has a good heart and provides Ryuko with invaluable moral support.

Appearance

Mako is a teenage girl with brown eyes and brown hair that is styled in a bowl cut. She is often seen wearing her school uniform; a white short-sleeve shirt with a blue neckerchief, as well as a blue mini skirt.

Biography

Mako lives with her parents, younger brother, and their pet dog in the slums of the city since they're poor. She spends her days as a no-star student of Honnōji Academy. She befriended the transfer student, Ryūko Matoi, when she first arrived to the classroom. After Ryūko tried to assault the head of the student council, Satsuki Kiryūin, she was forced to flee the scene after the Boxing Club Captain, Takaharu Fukuroda, defeated her. Mako was later captured due to having socialized with Ryuko before. The Disciplinary Group took Mako as a hostage, but fortunately she was saved by Ryūko before she could become deep-fried in a tub of scorching hot oil.

After the rematch between Ryūko and Takaharu Fukuroda, Mako met up with Ryūko once more when her family took her in. The next day, she invited Ryūko to stay with her and her family as they walked to school. Despite being relentlessly bombarded by a barrage of mach speed tennis balls to the face, Mako appeared relatively unfazed, though they eventually knocked her unconscious. Mako was then apprehended by the tennis club captain, Omiko, for missing practice the day before, despite the fact that she was only absent to begin with because she was held hostage at the time. Mako was then seen being suspended to a post and made human _target practice as punishment, being rapidly pelted by tennis balls from all directions, Ryūko once again came to her rescue. Mako made arguments against Uzu Sanageyama when he tried faulting Ryūko, resulting in a tennis match between the former and the tennis ball champion, Omiko. Once the match was over, Mako fled alongside Ryūko under the cover of improvised steam to escape.

When Ryūko was being overwhelmed during a battle against Satsuki due to not having properly resonating with Senketsu unlike her opponent, Mako directly intervened with the battle when it appeared that Ryuko had given up and was going to lose. She made a speech about how Ryūko shouldn't be ashamed that her power has the side-effect of showing off her body, even openly commenting that she and her family were talking about Ryūko's body the night prior. The speech motivated Ryūko to embrace wearing Senketsu and was finally able to maximize her potential as a Kamui user.

Powers and Abilities

In Episode 7, Mako was given a Two-Star Goku Uniform by Satsuki Kiryuin. As her club was the "Fighting Club", the Goku Uniform is designed after a Bancho, and consisted of a black over coat hung over her shoulders. While Mako doesn't get to show off her abilities very often, she's actually as strong as Satsuki in Life Fiber Tolerance and willpower. She can catch Abnormal Ammo barehanded, and override Life Fibers by the strength of will.

Trivia

  • Mako's Two-Star uniform is a reference to Jōtarō Kūjō's outfit, from the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure manga and anime series. The hat is a notable part of the uniform, as Mako’s hair appears to be attached to the hat. Jotaro’s hat is designed in a similar manner.
    • This outfit ties into a common visual trope regarding Japanese high school delinquent stereotypes often depicted in anime.
  • Mako made a small cameo in episode 10 of When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace where she is seen in swimming in the background.
