Ms. Chalice (Cuphead)

NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Ms. Chalice from the main Cuphead videogame series. The show variant can be found here: Ms. Chalice (The Cuphead Show!)

.

Ms. Chalice, also known as the Legendary Chalice, is the tritagonist of the 2017 run and gun video game Cuphead. She serves as one of the playable characters in the 2022 DLC The Delicious Last Course. She was originally a specter who haunted the three mausoleums located across the Inkwell Isles and would grant Cuphead and Mugman special abilities should they defeat all the ghosts inside each mausoleum. However, she later gains a young physical form during The Delicious Last Course to help Chef Saltbaker gather ingredients to make a Wondertart.

Appearance

As the Legendary Chalice, she is a golden, anthropomorphic chalice (often confused for a trophy) who has a beauty mark located on her left cheek, a blue transparent body, and a straw-like halo above her head, indicating that she is deceased. She also wears white gloves with golden cuffs and red lipstick (although the lipstick is not worn during The Delicious Last Course).

A statue of her located in "Rugged Ridge" that portrays her while she was alive indicates that she also wore a toga and high heels. She also assumes this appearance while using one of her Super Arts.

As Ms. Chalice, she is still a anthropomorphic chalice, but she no longer wears lipstick and her beauty mark is moved to her right cheek (although it would occasionally reappear on her left one). She also bares a further resemblance to Cuphead and Mugman, with milk and a straw being stored in her head. Her attire consists of white gloves, a blue skirt with white bloomers underneath, and a pair of golden shoes.

Personality

The Legendary Chalice is wise and helpful. She is notably generous as evidenced by the fact that she willing grants Cuphead and Mugman special abilities after they save her inside each of the mausoleums. She has apparently spent a long time searching for a way to restore herself back to life and was thrilled when she temporarily gained a physical body as Ms. Chalice. However, she does not want to sacrifice lives to achieve her goal.

Biography

Cuphead

The Legendary Chalice can be found inside three mausoleums within the Inkwell Isles, one in each respective section. Inside, she will call out for help from the brothers inside an urn, which the brothers must defend from hostile ghosts.

The ghosts will not harm the brothers, but they can only be defeated by parrying them, as indicated by their pink colors. Each mausoleum introduces different ghosts that have different movement patterns or require multiple parries in order to defeat them. Once all the ghosts have been defeated, the Legendary Chalice will emerge from the urn. She will thank the brothers for their help and grant them one special ability known as a "Super Art".

The Delicious Last Course

The Legendary Chalice becomes a playable character called Ms. Chalice in The Delicious Last Course DLC. She can be summoned by using the Astral Cookie Charm to replace the player's current character. Ms. Chalice begins each stage with a default of four hit points instead of three and can use unique abilities that the brother's cannot perform themselves, such as a double jump and a evasive roll. Her attacks during aeroplane stages also work differently.

In the story, the Legendary Chalice meets with Cuphead and Mugman on Inkwell Isle 4 to tell them that she had amazing news to share and it all had to do with a special cookie she was holding. She has Mugman take a bite of a cookie which suddenly causes him to become a ghost and brings Chalice back to life. Thrilled that she was alive again, Chalice leads both boys to the one who made the cookie while explaining that, until just now, she had tried everything to leave the astral plane with no success. They enter a bakery where Chalice introduces them to Chef Saltbaker, the finest baker in all the lands, before she and Mugman immediately revert to their previous states. Saltbaker remarks that the cookie's effects were only a temporary solution to Chalice's predicament and tells the trio that he can make a pastry called the Wondertart that can give them control over the astral plane, which would restore Chalice to life without the need to switch forms with someone else. But first, they must gather each of the five ingredients that are being guarded somewhere on the island.

After the heroes obtain all the ingredients they needed to make the Wondertart, Chef Saltbaker reveals that he had no intention on helping Chalice and plans to sacrifice one of their souls to complete the pastry and take control of the astral plane himself. However, the heroes foil Saltbaker's plot and destroy his bakery before Chalice decides to find another way to revive herself. She then embraces Cuphead and Mugman, reminding them that they can still use the cookie she gave them to call for her help anytime.

Trivia

  • Her appearance as Ms. Chalice bares a resemblance to Minnie Mouse.
  • In the epilogue of Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course, Ms. Chalice is seen in mortal form alongside Cuphead and Mugman during the grand reopening of Chef Saltbaker's bakery. This indicates that she was at some point able to successfully return to life without sacrificing another soul.
