Toby is a supporting character in Disney's 1986 feature film, The Great Mouse Detective.
He is basset-hound, who lives with Sherlock Holmes, and often goes with Basil of Baker Street, he is one of the two most loyal friends (alongside Dr. David Q. Dawson). Although he is Sherlock Holmes' dog, Toby investigates more with Basil than with Holmes. He is the archnemesis of Felicia due to dog and cats being enemies by nature.
His sound voice is done by Frank Welker.
History
When Basil, Dawson and Olivia go looking for him, the latter two ask who he is and he appears before them.
First Basil introduces them to Dawson to whom Toby growls at feeling the fear of her, but Basil tells them to stop, then he smells Olivia which he immediately likes and she gives him Mrs. Judson's cheese scones and scratches his belly.
Basil asks Toby to smell Fidget's bat hat to find it and to save Olivia's father he had kidnapped at the beginning of the film, and the three gallop on him to reach Fidget.
When they reach the toy store, Toby howls and Fidget notices him. Toby gets Basil and Olivia out, but lets Dawson down rudely by sneezing.
He is then ordered to sit down, he doesn't listen to Basil, but Olivia does. Later, after Fidget kidnaps Olivia in her sack and tries to get out of the shop Toby came in from, he stops him growling at him, however, Fidget manages to escape from another exit.
After that, Toby then takes Basil and Dawson back to Baker Street.
Later, when Basil and Dawson find out that Fidget has been drinking beer from a pub where the sewer connects to the waterfront, Toby leads him to the waterfront and is told to wait where he is. Later, after rescuing themselves from Rattigan's trap and rescuing Olivia, Toby joins them to take them to Buckingham Palace to rescue the endangered queen and they try to kill her with Ratigan's cat Felicia and then rule the kingdom.
The heroes arrive just in time to save her, while Toby takes care of Felicia. Toby chases after her, but the cat manages to escape over a brick wall, only to be presumably mauled by the royal guard dogs on the other side.
After the case resolved and Ratigan's death, Toby is last seen listening to a client for Basil's next case, which Toby is eager to initiate.
