Aim and Scope of Neurosurgery Practice
Neurosurgery Practice publishes scientific articles, both clinical and experimental, from across the neurosurgical subspecialties including but not limited to vascular, spine, and tumor. Neurosurgery Practice features clinical research, reviews, case instructions, and other information of interest to neurosurgeons. Neurosurgery Practice is an online-only, fully Open Access publication with content publishing under either the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY-NC-ND or CC-BY license.
Submission Preparation: Neurosurgery Practice Article Types
NOTE: All submissions undergo a “Technical Check" to confirm their adherence to Journal standards. If your submission is not formatted correctly, it will be returned for corrections, delaying peer review. Please format your submission correctly to ensure timely processing. Article Publication
Neurosurgery Practice follows a continuous publication model with issues closed on a quarterly basis. Published articles will first appear on the Latest Articles page of the
Neurosurgery Practice site. Once a quarterly issue closes all articles published during that time will be assigned to the issue. Articles will publish online as soon as possible unless otherwise held for specific issue placement or embargo.
FULL-LENGTH ARTICLE TYPES
These article types cover a range of topics from neurosurgery. The information and data presented in these studies should be based on original research.
These articles represent a substantial body of laboratory or clinical work. The objective should be well defined, the methodology should be well described, and the evidence presented should be original and the discussion should be based on the data. Ethical standards must be met for both human and cadaveric subjects, with the approval of institutional research board (IRB) and appropriate consents. These articles should follow standard study designs and protocols as outlined by the Research Reporting Guidelines. Clinical Protocols describe proposed or ongoing research and provide a detailed account of the hypothesis, rationale, and methodology of the planned study. The journal will consider clinical protocols of proposed or ongoing trials provided they have not completed patient recruitment at the time of submission. Clinical protocols will usually be accepted without further peer review if the study has received institutional IRB and ethics approval as well as peer-review and grant funding from a major extramural funding body. We are unable to consider clinical protocols without ethics or IRB approval or major extramural funding at the time of submission. Examples of major funding agencies include NIH (US), MRC (UK), DFG (Germany), and CNRS (France). All clinical trials must be registered at an appropriate online public registry, and registration information should be included with the submission.
Investigators must consent in principle to submit all or a substantial portion of the primary manuscript to Neurosurgery Practice at the conclusion of the study, which the Journal will send for peer-review. The Journal will provisionally commit to rapidly publish the main clinical findings of the study absent major deviations from protocol, poor reporting or over interpretation of data, loss of originality, or undue delay after the planned submission date. The Journal will continue to accept for consideration submissions whose protocols have not been previously submitted to Neurosurgery Practice. Review articles are balanced accounts of all aspects of a particular subject including the pros and cons of any contentious or uncertain aspect. The Journal publishes 2 types of reviews:
- Qualitative Reviews are based on previous literature, are often narrative, and provide current guidance on the latest neurosurgery practices.
- Quantitative Reviews involve data analysis and predictions, can include control groups, and present discussions on certain neurosurgery techniques, tools/equipment, and implementation.

Case Instructions must present an unusual clinical development or a new insight into a well-recognized clinical scenario and provide evidence of how the case contributes to understanding of the condition/treatment. Case Instructions that do not satisfy these requirements will not be considered. See Research Reporting Guidelines for information regarding CARE.
Please be aware that Neurosurgery Practice accepts a very small percentage of submitted Case Instructions. Consequently, review times are extended.

Legacy-Institutions and People submissions should be focused on notable people, institutions, or organizations.
Special Article submissions may address an important topic in neurosurgery or related disciplines, ethics, health policy, and the law.

Neurosurgery Practice with Code articles are Clinical Research articles enhanced with a standardized section providing valuable links to the code and datasets underlying the research reported in the manuscript. In addition to adhering to all requirements for the Clinical Research article type, authors submitting a Neurosurgery Practice with Code article must provide links to the code and datasets and indicate code functionality and key results details immediately below the abstract in keeping with the following format and instructions:
Code: Authors must provide a link to their code via an open-source repository. This repository must support commit history and branching. At the time of submission authors should post their code to a branch entitled Neurosurgery Practice that will remain unaltered in order to maintain the integrity of the manuscript as it is reviewed and published, pending acceptance.
Code Functionality: Authors must provide at least one descriptive term for their code functionality. Terms are left to the author's discretion.
Datasets: Authors must provide a link to their dataset(s) via a data repository that is publicly accessible, either through a third party or through their institution. For more information please refer to the journal's Data Availability Statement here.
Key Results: Authors must provide the following information in the Key Results section. Terms and values are left to the author's discretion, however please note that each separate result should be entered as a new row.

Editorial
Editorials are invited essays written and submitted by a member of the Editorial Board that represents the Journal's position on a particular topic.

Guest Editorials are invited essays written and submitted by a member of the neurosurgery community to express their views on an issue timely to the neurosurgery community.

Editor's Message
The Editor's Message is an article type reserved specifically for communications from the Editor-in-Chief to the Journal readership. The Editor-in-Chief may use this as a venue to provide updates on the Journal and its features or to communicate his or her views on a subject timely to the neurosurgery community.
Digital Archiving
Wolters Kluwer provides for long-term digital preservation through two primary partnerships, Portico and CLOCKSS. Portico is a leading digital preservation service worldwide. The content is preserved as an archival version and is not publicly accessible via Portico, but is provided when required under specific conditions, such as discontinuation of the collection or catastrophic failure of the website. CLOCKSS will enable any library to maintain their own archive of content from Wolters Kluwer and other publishers, with minimal technical effort and using cheaply available hardware.
