Praecipua lipidorum officia sunt conservatio energiae et esse pro structuris membranorum cellularium et molecula significationis lipidorum.

Conformationes nonnullorum lipidorum communium. Summa: acidum oleicum[1] et cholesterol.[2] Media conformatio est triglyceridum a catenis oleoti, stearati, et palmitati compositum ad spinam glycerolis? compositum. In ima tabula est phosphatidylcholinum, commune phospholipidum.[3]

Lipida late definiuntur ut parvae moleculae hydrophobicae vel amphiphilicae; amphiphilica aliquorum lipidorum natura eis sinit formare structuras sicut vesiculae, liposomata, vel membrana in circumiectu aquali. Lipida biologica omnino vel partim oriuntur ex duobus distinctis subunitatum biochemicarum generibus: gregibus ketoacyli et isopreni[4]. Lipida sic possunt dividi in octo categorias: acida adipata, glycerolipida, glycerophospholipida, sphingolipidas, saccharolipida, et polyketida? (ex condensatione subunitatum gregibus ketoacyli deducta), et lipida sterol et lipida prenol (ex condensatione subunitatum gregibus isopreni deducta).
