Matthew Stewart or Matt Stewart is an American fantasy illustrator. He depicts many characters from The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings and its appendices. Some of his art is used in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (2011) by Fantasy Flight Games.
Biography
Stewart became enamored with J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium in the sixth grade after reading The Hobbit. His artist career launched following his studies at Parsons School of Design in New York City.[1] Outside Middle-earth work, he has made illustrations for the Realms of Fantasy magazine and the games Epic Encounters and Magic: The Gathering (for the sets Magic Origins, Conspiracy, Khans of Tarkir and others).
Stewart has won the Association of SciFi and Fantasy Artists' Chesley Award three times, and been nominated eight times.[2]
Middle-earth subjects he has illustrated include Éowyn, Aredhel & Eöl, Gimli, Gandalf, Smaug, Beorn, Frodo, Lúthien, and Scatha the Worm.
Stewart resides with his wife in New Jersey, USA.
