Motivation

edit

As you might be aware almost all works have different ways of naming the roles of it's contributors in the credits even if the role means the same. Other works have roles that are so specific that they have no items on Wikidata.

Having this property would allow us to show how the roles of subjects were described in the individual works, both as a way to provide additional context but also to allow us to show the roles even when no appropriate item exists and to make it easier to find said subjects in the credits--Trade (talk) 07:05, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thought you might be interested @Moebeus:--Trade (talk) 16:36, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed interesting. My immediate thought: this would be meaningless very confusing unless it's specifically tied to an edition of a work, right? Moebeus (talk) 18:07, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't encountered this issue so far. Either way we should always go with whichever release is the original/official Trade (talk) 18:42, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • If we already do this for movie cast roles I guess it's only logical to do an extension into video games too. It will lead to more text in how roles appear in video games. Can help us make roles better, so this data may help us editors more than it might help others(which is not a bad thing, life can be very difficult for editors like us who are expected to be either experts or know a thing or two). I find subject named as being very useful when naming video games on Wikidata because we see identifiers like Steam, how they name a game and then on igdb it may appear differently, especially if the main language isn't English. That helps in creating "Also named as" where people may search for something but it may turn up 0 results, which can be very frustrating so knowing what names roles have, we can better know how to name a role.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by SuperUltraHardCoreGamer (talk • contribs) at 10:30, 1 December 2024 (UTC).[reply]
  •   Support Don't see an issue, as long as they include structured data as well. More information is good. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 18:37, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
