Cogs are a type of object featured in a few Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong platforming games. Cogs first appear in Yoshi's Story.

Description

Cogs are generally used to power mechanisms, which can be dangerous for the playable characters as Cogs often put them at risk as they move around. Cogs come in varying sizes, and some of the larger ones can lift the characters up to a higher area.

In the Super Mario series

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Cogs are featured in World 1- . Here, Mario or other playable characters are required to travel across them in order to progress. If a character is crushed by a Cog, they instantly lose a life.

New Super Mario Bros. U

Cogs make an appearance within Crushing-Cogs Tower. They retain their general functionality from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but are now used to travel up within a tower level and fight Boom Boom at the end.
