Ostro

Ostros are ostrich enemies which first appear in Super Mario Bros. 2. Shy Guys are often found each riding on an Ostro as their steed.

Physical description

Ostros are pink ostriches with yellow beaks, legs, and feet. In the original Super Mario Bros. 2, an Ostro's sprites show it with black feathers, white wings, and white legs. In the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance remakes, Ostros had their sprites changed to reflect their depiction in their artwork, which is pink feathers, a yellow beak, and yellow legs and feet. In their Super Mario Advance artwork, Ostros have white wings, like in the original Super Mario Bros. 2, but their sprites in both remakes are shown to be pink like their body.

In Super Mario Bros. 2

Several Ostros have a Shy Guy riding on them. Ostros are unaffected when walking on quicksand and spikes. Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess Toadstool can ride on top of an Ostro as it moves around.

Trivia

  • Their name is derived from Ostrich and the letter O.
  • In the original manual and end credits of Super Mario Bros. 2 (and in the instruction manual) their name and Birdo's are swapped. This error would not be fixed until the English release of Super Mario Advance.
