Synopsis for "Holocaust in a Hidden Land!"

In deep space, Captain Marvel is introduced to Nebula, the merciless mistress of her abductors. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the Avengers follow Terminus into the Savage Land, where they meet Ka-Zar and Zabu, the only survivors of the research group's deadly encounter with the alien. Ka-Zar's wife Shanna is rescued by Starfox, as Terminus, blasting through a plateau, enters the larger jungle region of Pangea and commences to devastate it. The Avengers pursue their quarry, but he easily sweeps their quinjet from the skies, even as the jungle, its artificial environment wrecked, begins to revert to the normal Antarctic climate. When the Black Knight severs the creature's hand with his sword, Terminus is revealed as a robot exoskeleton. Starfox then hurls Hercules at their foe, and the Olympian rips through Terminus's armor, exposing the helpless, hopelessly obese creature within. Although he sees that Terminus is now helpless, Hercules doesn't show the creature to Starfox and instead walks off with him to find the other Avengers and get them to shelter, leaving Terminus to die as he lies there, unprotected, in the raging blizzard.

Notes

  • Although only Lemura and Aerie Shalan are shown being directly destroyed by Terminus, the story soon makes it clear that all of Pangea has been destroyed.
  • This issue's story ends with Terminus dying in the freezing blizzard created by his own destructive actions. Although this story was presumably written with the intention that this Terminus was the planet-ravager first seen in Fantastic Four #269, a retcon in X-Men Annual #12 will later reveal that he was not the real Terminus after all, just someone piloting a giant robot that had been made to look like the real Terminus. Quasar #7 will reveal that the "Terminus" who died in this issue was actually Jorro, a Deviant weapons maker who had created the replica space armor for Terminus and had then worn it when sent to recover Terminus's lance and to engage Earth's champions in battle so that Terminus could better gauge the extent of their might.
    • As the entity who sent Jorro on his mission, Terminus is BTS in this story. Plus, the fact that Jorro seems to actually believe that he is Terminus throughout this storyline suggests that the real Terminus may have brainwashed him into believing that as a way to control him.
  • What remains of the Terminus armor/robot that was torn apart by Hercules will be briefly seen, covered by snow, in Avengers #258. After that, it will next appear in X-Men Annual #12, restored to its prime condition and powered by the life-force of its new pilot, Garokk, who had been brainwashed to believe that he was the real Terminus.
    • Terminus' Lance will next be seen in X-Men Annual #12, being wielded by Terminus (Garokk).
  • Although the "Lord Typ" who died in this issue may have been meant to be the M'Dom Typ who had previously been established as being the leader of Aerie Shalan, that character died in Ka-Zar the Savage #3. The entry for this issue in Avengers, Thor & Captain America: Official Index to the Marvel Universe #8 mentions this fact in a Note which states that, despite the not infrequent resurrections in the Marvel universe, this Lord Typ is presumably not the same character as former Aerian leader M'dom Typ who had died. The Note speculates that, given his almost identical appearance, this Typ might be a relative.
