Synopsis for "Incredible Hulk"

Reprint of the 1st story from

(originally printed as When the Hulk Comes Raging!)
Remembering that Jarella's body is being kept at Gamma Base, the Hulk bounds his way towards the New Mexico Desert. Detecting the gamma-spawned monsters approach, Gamma Base's new commanding officer, Colonel Glenn Talbot, sends a Hulkbuster unit to greet him. Although they greatly outnumber the Hulk and have many fantastic weapons, the brute is so furious he is able to fend off all of their attacks and smashes their various armored vehicles. It's then that Talbot decides to get involved personally. In a suit of Mandroid armor, Glenn confronts the Hulk and accuses him for ruining his life and his marriage.

At that moment in Denver, Colorado, both Rick Jones and Fred Sloan are appearing on a national talk show to talk about their mutual experiences with the Hulk. Rick Jones as the Hulk's former sidekick, and Sloan as the Hulk's most recent companion as well as the author of an upcoming book based on the man-monster. They talk about how the Hulk is basically harmless so long as he isn't attacked. After the interview is over, Fred Sloan introduces Rick to his assistant Trish Starr, and Rick introduces him to his long time ally Captain Marvel and his lover Elysius. When they catch a report that the Hulk is currently attacking Gamma Base, Captain Marvel clashes his Nega-Bands together causing him to transform into his costume and flies off to clash with them.

Back at Gamma Base, the Hulk launches his attack on Glenn Talbot. As the two men fight it out, Talbot goes into detail about why he thinks the Hulk has ruined his life, ruined his former father-in-law and ruined his marriage. Lastly he recalls how the Hulk saved his life by travelling into his brain and destroying the Gremlin's mental block. Recalling how the Hulk was shrunken down into his mind, Talbot decides an ideal way of getting revenge is to pierce into the Hulk's brain using one of the Mandroid's blades. The Hulk fights back and easily overpowers Talbot, furious that he was attacked when all he wanted was to recover Jarella's body which has been held at Gamma Base since she died.

The power of the Hulk's blows send them crashing into the lower levels of Gamma Base. There, Talbot discovers, to his horror, that the Mandroid armor has been disabled. Worse, the Hulk is straining to break his back. Before the Hulk can kill Talbot, he is blasted from behind by Captain Marvel. The Hulk tells the Kree warrior that he has come for his former love, Jarella. Using his Cosmic Conciousness, Mar-Vell offers to help Hulk recover Jarella and return her body to her homeworld, but he cannot allow him to kill Glenn Talbot.

Silver Surfer Vol 1 7 - 01

Detailed Summary:
Ludwig von Frankenstein, the modern descendant of Victor von Frankenstein, and his hunchbacked assistant Borgo attempt to create life using modern scientific technology. But the local villagers have had their fill of the Frankenstein legacy and storm the castle. Frankenstein decides to activate his latest project, Experiment X. But in order to do so, he needs a powerful living host – one that is strong enough to survive the process.

The Silver Surfer, flying through the Alps, sees the villagers storming the castle and believing them to be aggressors, repels them with his cosmic blasts. Count Frankenstein invites him into his castle and pretends to befriend him. The Silver Surfer is reluctant to trust him at first, but agrees to help him. Frankenstein tricks him into becoming the host for Experiment X. Trapping the Surfer and strapping him to a table, he begins to siphon the power cosmic from him and redirect it into a lifeless clay model. Imbued with the power of the Silver Surfer, the creation comes to life, assumes the Surfer's form, and attacks him. Frankenstein sends the false Surfer into the village to avenge himself against them.

Frankenstein notices that the Silver Surfer is still alive and decides to finish him off with another of his weapons. To his surprise, the Surfer stands unharmed and demands to know what are his plans for the clone. Borgo reveals to him that Frankenstein plans to use the duplicate to bring fear to the world. The Silver Surfer departs to stop his evil doppelganger.

The two Surfers confront each other. Their fight rages throughout the village and eventually the Silver Surfer carries the battle out into Earth’s atmosphere to avoid harming others. Both combatants are evenly matched, but the Surfer's experience gives him an advantage.

Back in the Alps, the diminutive Borgo decides that he has taken Count Frankenstein's abuse long enough. He tackles Frankenstein, as he is firing down on the villagers, and both of them topple out of the castle window where they fall to their deaths.

Back in the sky, the duplicate decides to bring the battle back to the city. The Silver Surfer, looking to end the violence once and for all, grabs a hold of the false Surfer and begins to drain him of his cosmic energy. Before long, there is nothing left of clone and he disappears into thin air. The Silver Surfer is once again whole.

Synopsis for "The Beast"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Amazing Adventures (Vol. 2) #14
(originally printed as The Vampire Machine)
The Beast has stumbled into the middle of a Stark International munitions test, prompting Iron Man to try to pull the Beast out of danger. The Beast is surprised to find that Iron Man is alive and well, and when they are out of danger, the two are confronted by the Stark security on the scene. One trigger happy guard instantly shoots at the Beast before Iron Man can order them to stand down. The shot isn't bad due to Beast's healing, and the two heroes make peace. When Iron Man asks if this has helped what's troubled him, the Beast tells Iron Man that it's not even close before hopping away. When the same guard tries to shoot the Beast as he leaves, Iron Man crushes his gun and fires the man on the spot.

Rushing home, Hank takes time to figure out what to do with his situation now when Linda buzzes his apartment. Hank invites her up and scrambles to put on his human disguise, having to improvise for not being able to put on the full outfit. Pretending he has a cold, Hank quickly dismisses Linda by telling her that he is still contagious and sends her off. Furious at having to keep this secret, Hank smashes up his apartment and pulls off his disguise and goes off into the night to get his full disguise. He leaves just as Vera, coming to his apartment once more comes calling to find that there is no answer.

Arriving at the Brant Corporation compound, Beast is instantly attacked by the military posted there led by Buzz Baxter. Beast manages to get past them and into his office where he can put on his proper disguise. Emerging from the building in his Hank McCoy persona, he is questioned by Buzz Baxter who demands to know what Hank is doing there, to which Hank quips that he works there. Buzz then begins to grill Hank with questions about his whereabouts and the appearances of the Beast around the compound. Things get more complicated when Linda arrives and is confused to find Hank there. When Buzz once more asks where Hank has been, he makes a gamble that Linda will cover for him and says he was with Linda. However, Linda denies this putting Hank in more trouble. However, before Buzz can interrogate him further, the Beast is apparently sighted elsewhere on the compound prompting all military personnel to leave to investigate, including Buzz, however, Buzz orders him to be in his office the next day at 9:00 am.

Left alone with Linda, Hank is further manipulated by this spy who tells him that she couldn't lie to the military because she "loves her country" and tries to make up with Hank by telling her that she loves him, hoping this will make him trust her more and reveal more of his secrets. Returning to his lab, Hank continues to try and find a cure for his mutation. Spotting a strange figure wandering around in the lab, Hank changes into the Beast to investigate. He attacks the intruder, who turns out to be Quasimodo the living computer. Quasimodo has come to the Brand Corporation in the hopes of running into the Beast in the hopes of stealing his metabolic abilities so that he can get a step closer to becoming more human.

The two begin fighting across the lab, and their fight sends them smashing out of a window and onto a part of the Brant property where a new building is currently being bought. During the fight Quasimodo grabs a rivet gun and manages to strike Beast, piercing his skin, surprising the Beast that his regenerative powers have failed him. This allows Quasimodo to jump on him and use his device to steal the Beast's life force. However, to Quasimodo's surprise even in the face of death, the Beast continues to struggle and refuses to give up. Trying to compute the situation, Quasimodo realizes that he is really just an inhuman creature more so than the Beast and commits suicide by jumping off the scaffolding to death below.

Recovering from the attack and considering the battle, the Beast remarks about how Quasimodo's final actions were more human than the living computer could ever fathom.

Synopsis for "Hulk's Greatest Battles"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Marvel Team-Up #18
(originally printed as Where Bursts the Bomb!)
Following the dissolution of the Fantastic Four, the Human Torch is spending some time visiting his old college friend Wyatt Wingfoot. While they travel along the Catskills, they spot a fuel truck that has crashed. While Wyatt sweeps the drivers to safety, the Torch uses his powers to envelope the burning tanker in a flame barrier to lessen the force of the resulting explosion. Afterward, Johnny admits how things don't feel right without Ben or Reed around. Suddenly, a device on Wyatt's sky-cycle starts going off alerting Johnny that one of the Fantastic Four's most powerful foes is active once again.

Meanwhile, at an old cottage home, Doctor Paxton Pentecost is laboring to resurrect a powerful being that has been in his possession for some time. After blasting a massive cylinder with energy, the being inside suddenly breaks free. It is Blastaar, a warlord from the Negative Zone. When Blastaar threatens to destroy Pentecost, he discovers that the scientist has implanted an obedience device in his brain that causes him pain until Blastaar surrenders. Paxton explains that he learned about Blastaar from his first battle with the Fantastic Four and recovered his seeming demise at the hands of the X-Men. Blastaar demands to know why he was revived. Paxton explains that he invented an autonomous factory called FAUST that was stolen from him by his financial backer Ferguson Blaine. He now wants Blastaar to destroy his creation before Blaine can profit from it. Blastaar accepts the challenge, using his blasts to destroy a scale model of the factory. Elsewhere, the Hulk lands on a nearby construction site. Panicked by his arrival, one of the construction workers attempts to strike him with a wrecking ball. This barely phases the Hulk and he begins going on a rampage, trashing the construction equipment along the way. Suddenly, the Hulk feels a stabbing pain in his head. Furious, he leaps off trying to find the source, intending to smash it once he has the chance.

At that moment, Blastaar is attacking the FAUST facility, when he is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of the Human Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot. The Torch ingulfs Blastaar with a flame blast, but the creature shrugs it off and strikes the Torch with a blast that sends him flying. As fate would have it, Johnny lands into the open hands of the Hulk. He tries to convince the gamma-spawned monster to help, but the Hulk is uninterested until the painful buzzing in his head begins again. Meanwhile, Ferguson Blaine arrives on the scene with the authorities. He tries to talk sense into Paxton, but this falls on deaf ears. Instead, Pentecost has Blastaar attack the officers who have arrived on the scene. However, before he can cause any serious harm, the Hulk and the Human Torch arrive. While the Hulk battles Blastaar, Paxton is prevented from shooting his former colleague by the Human Torch. Unable to stop Blastaar, they stand by and watch in awe as the Hulk crumples the Adamantium walls of FAUST around Blastaar, encasing him in a shell of the nearly indestructible metal and then tosses him out to sea.

With the battle over, the Hulk finds the pain in his mind is gone and leaps away. When Blaine thanks the Human Torch for his help. The Torch points out that his greed cost a good scientist his mind.
