Synopsis for "The One That Got Away: Part One"
Carnage (Vol. 2) #1
At the Grey Ridge Mine, Colonel John Jameson and FBI agent Claire Dixon discuss the broadcast, revealing it is the set-up for a trap intended to capture Carnage using portable sonic cannons. Meeting with Manuela, Jameson asks why she would serve three tours in Afghanistan, and she counters by asking why he would rejoin the military and fly rescue missions in Iraq. Barry Gleason, the managing director of Grey Ridge Investments, reveals using Manuela as bait was his idea, as was the plan to capture Carnage using the now played-out mine. Jameson asks what happens if the plan fails, and Agent Dixon introduces him to Eddie Brock.
Jameson expresses shock that the FBI recruited Venom, but Dixon explains that he is now Toxin. When Jameson asks what Toxin is, Eddie explains that the Venom symbiote is now bonded to another guy working for the government, and that the Toxin symbiote is the offspring of the Carnage symbiote, which is itself the offspring of the Venom symbiote. Dixon states the FBI detained Eddie with the sonic cannons after he wiped out a Philadelphian drug cartel. Eddie remarks that he is aware that the FBI was tracking him for a week beforehand, and Agent Dixon responds that he was doing something useful and has the opportunity to keep doing so. Manuela asks what she means, and Agent Dixon states they used the symbiote suppressant technology on Toxin, and that if Eddie follows orders he is on permanent parole. Eddie remarks that not everyone hopes that the operation will go smoothly, and as he walks away Jameson remarks that if they have to rely on him then things could go even worse than anticipated. Agent Dixon remarks that it should not come to that, and Manuela states it is good to know they're thinking ahead.
At dusk, Manuela and a team of agents set out into the mining site, while Jameson remarks that the setup reminds him of the goat scene in Jurassic Park. Jameson asks why they really brought him in, and Agent Dixon responds that the bureau has its reasons. Dixon calls in Manuela, who responds that the perimeter sensors show no activity. Eddie, standing nearby, dryly remarks that they wouldn't. Outside, Carnage stealthily picks off the patrolling guards, leaving one member of each team alive to report no activity. When one of the agents asks why a girl was attending a boy's school, Manuela replies that her mother was the live-in help. Agent Dixon catches sight of Carnage's tendrils on one of the cameras at the West Grid access point, and Eddie replies that things are getting fun.
Carnage ambushes Manuela and kills the guard accompanying her. Manuela calls for the teams to converge on her, dodging Carnage's tentacles. Jameson remarks that Carnage is moving too quickly for the cannons to track, and Eddie asks Agent Dixon to send him in, but is told to shut up. Agent Dixon tells Manuela to get Carnage into the _target grid, and Manuela hits Carnage with a pipe before making a break for the _target zone. Carnage pursues her, remarking that he is not going to let her escape again, but is blasted by the sonic emitters, which force the symbiote away from Cletus. The sonic vibrations shake loose a backfill in an old drift tunnel, causing a massive cave-in directly beneath Cletus, swallowing him along with several agents. As Agent Dixon angrily confronts Barry Gleason, who says he thought the site was clear, Eddie cheerfully states it is time for Plan B.
At daybreak, Colonel Jameson remarks that if it weren't for the fact the agents were trapped, they could leave Carnage to be sealed in the mine. Eddie asks Jameson if he is afraid, and Jameson states that Carnage killed nine people in under thirty seconds, making their rescue op reckless. Agent Dixon states that the operation is volunteer only, and Jameson states that since he has been to the Moon he may as well go down a hole. As they prepare to descend in the mine's elevator, Manuela states that she should be doing this, and Agent Dixon replies that they need her help to understand what went wrong, telling Eddie to shut up when he volunteers his reason for coming.Appearing in 2nd story

Carnage (Vol. 2) #2
Aboveground, Claire Dixon, Manny Calderon, Eddie Brock, and Barry Gleason view the footage of the agent's death, recorded forty-five minutes prior via a CCTV camera in a shaft called Drift Nineteen. Manuela asks where that is, and Gleason replies that's a good two-hundred feet below-ground. As Gleason expresses sympathy for the Agents trapped with Carnage, Eddie remarks that it's not Cletus Kasady they need to worry about but the Carnage symbiote. Gleason explains that the sonic cannons opened a fissure into a played-out section of the mine and there's no way of determining where the lost agents are now. Dixon angrily confronts him, saying he assured them that couldn't happen and now she has nine dead agents on her ledger. Eddie quips that ten agents are dead, causing her to snap at him to shut up. Dixon seethes that if she finds out that Gleason was responsible for this incident in any way, but she's interrupted when an agent says they've located Colonel Jameson and his team at the bottom of Shaft One, in Drift Seventeen. Dixon contacts Jameson, telling him where Carnage's last known location was, but Manuela spots something in the feed of a CCTV camera in Drift Sixteen. Carnage suddenly leers into the camera before destroying it, and Dixon relays the new intel to Jameson.
In the tunnel, Jameson stares at his hand and checks the base of this throat, muttering that it can't be possibe; and when an agent asks what's wrong he says that an old injury's flaring up. The power suddenly cuts out, and Dixon sends Manuela and Eddie to find out what happened. Jameson's team finds the mutilated body of one of the agents; while Manuela and Eddie find that the power station's control panel was smashed, Eddie remarking that there's a traitor in their midst. Dixon furiously demands to know where Gleason is and dispatches agents to find him. Manuela instructs Eddie on how to bring the power station back online, and when he asks how she knows this she says she made it her business to review the emergency systems. Eddie jokingly calls her an overachiever, but she replies her military mindset causes her to always assess the risks and resources in new situations. Eddie remarks that he knows she's been watching him like a bomb that's about to go off, and she says she read Dixon's file on him. Eddie replies that she should know he's trying to redeem himself from his crimes as Venom. Manuela retorts that she knows Dixon sees Eddie as a weapon and doesn't trust him; and when Eddie asks whether she trusts him, Manuela replies that she trusted the men and women she served with implicitly but that with everyone else trust is provisional. Eddie replies that that's good to know, and that the feeling is mutual.
The power is restored enough to activate the CCTV cameras, and Dixon sees that Carnage is rapidly closing in on Jameson's team. In the tunnels, Jameson's team check their radios but hear nothing except static and dead air. Jameson asks Agent Skeates if he's got anything, but Carnage steps out of the darkness and quips that Agent Skeates is tied up at the moment. Jameson and his team open fire with the sonic cannons, causing the tunnel to cave in. Aboveground, Dixon asks why they couldn't reach them and is told that the deeper they go the more the mineral deposits interfere with the signal. Eddie and Manuela arrive and the team sets out, Eddie asking Dixon if she's activating him. Dixon retorts that she's only activating him if they encounter Carnage and even then only as a last resort, Manuela protesting that Jameson and his team are in danger. Dixon says that Jameson may not be in as much danger as she thinks, telling Manuela that she didn't bring Jameson in for his combat experience but because he has certain capabilities even he isn't aware of. Dixon's team finds that the aboveground entrance to the mine has collapsed, but Manuela points out an entrance hatch. Eddie makes a reference to Lost, asking Dixon if she'd ever seen it and wondering where she spent the 2000's.
At Grey Ridge Mine's executive building, a pair of agents find Gleason in his office and inform him that Dixon wants him at the command center. Gleason responds that what Dixon wants and that what she'll be getting are two very different things, flipping a switch that floods the room with toxic gas, killing them. Opening a boc and removing a red tome with a gold "d" on the cover, Gleason remarks that Dixon was a useful tool but that her usefulness is ending. Removing the tome, Gleason says that the agents' sacrifices have helped bring about a new age once "He Who Sleeps" awakens.
In a tunnel in the depths of the mine, an agent asks Colonel Jameson if he's alright as he doubles over coughing. Carnage crawls towards them along the roof of the tunnel, remarking that while he was having fun it's starting to get boring. The agent pleads with Jameson, saying they need to escape, as Carnage demands to know where Manuela Calderon is. As Carnage grabs the agent with tendrils and interrogates him, Colonel Jameson lets out a bestial snarl - transforming into a werewolf-like beast with a glowing red crystal at the base of his throat - and states that Manuela isn't there but that maybe he can help him. Carnage demands to know who Jameson is, and the werewolf-like beast replies that he used to be John Jameson but that now Jameson isn't there, introducing himself as Man-Wolf as he lunges.Appearing in 3rd story

Synopsis for 3rd story
Carnage (Vol. 2) #3
Elsewhere, Colonel John Jameson has transformed into Man-Wolf, terrifying Agent Hanks. Carnage calls Man-Wolf a werewolf, only to be corrected by Jameson's alter-ego. Sneering that either way Jameson is a furry, Carnage and Man-Wolf begin to fight. Aboveground, Barry Gleason kills two FBI agents as they argue over what occurred before descending into the mine himself. In Drift Twelve, Manuela tells Dixon about Brock's claustrophobia only to be informed that he was trying to trick her into unleashing the Toxin symbiote. Dixon elaborates that Brock had once stated that the Venom symbiote had turned him into a monster and forced him to commit murders, but that he had later jumped at the chance to be infected by the Toxin symbiote, calling his testimony into question. When Manuela states that Dixon doesn't trust Brock, Dixon remarks that it's Toxin she doesn't trust, stating that her grandfather returned from the Vietnam War with PTSD and a heroin addiction. She explains to Manuela that the if the suppressant device is deactivated, they have 48 hours to reactivate it before the symbiote takes over Brock completely and that unleashing Toxin is an absolute last resort. When Manuela calls her judgement into question, Dixon tells her how Jameson once came into possession of the Godstone. They come across Agent Hanks, who informs them that the other agents are dead before suffering a mental breakdown.
As this conversation occurs, the brawl between Carnage and Man-Wolf breaks through a mine shaft and they fall into a large cavern. Reverted to human form, Cletus and Jameson take a moment to survey their surroundings before transforming back into Carnage and Man-Wolf. Surveying the battle from above, Brock asks how Jameson could be unaware he's a werewolf, and Dixon responds that Spider-Man removed the Godstone years ago, but that its power rewrote Jameson's genetic material. The FBI only found out that he retained its power a few months ago, when when he disappeared in Afghanistan and was later discovered to have massacred a Taliban training camp. In the cavern below, Carnage _targets a glowing spot at the base of Man-Wolf's throat and tears out a replica of the Godstone, sneering that over his various battles he picked up that if something glows its important. He crushes the Godstone, causing Jameson to revert to human form and topple into a pit. Dixon prepares to unleash Toxin, but Gleason arrives and shoots the suppression device's controller out of her hands. Manuela dives after it, but falls after it into the pit. Brock angrily opens fire with his sonic cannon, causing another cave-in. As the dust settles, Gleason approaches Carnage and leads him to a large door, proclaiming himself the man who will show Carnage his destiny.
