History

Ophanim (אוֹפַנִּים ʼōp̄annīm), also known as ofanim or galgalim, are a class of celestial angels in Judeo-Christian mythology that are known for their wisdom and thus are depicted as being angels of knowledge. Ophanim are constantly reflecting on God's will so that they can understand and follow it wisely. The ophanim explain God's will to other beings that the Creator has made to help all develop greater wisdom.

Their names are having the meaning of "wheel," as such they are described as having their spirits encased inside wheels that moved along with them wherever they went. The ophanim's wheels are covered with eyes, which symbolize their constant awareness of what is occurring around them and how well those activities align with God's will.

They are described in the Book of Enoch as with the cherubim and seraphim as never sleeping, but watching and guarding the throne of God. They are often equated with thrones, as such, they share the same translation in Asia as "Angel of Seat/Throne" (座天使, Zatenshi)^?.

"Ophanium" is actually the plural version of this class of angel, with the singular version being "Ophan" (אוֹפָן ʼōp̄ān).

Ophanim appears as a boss in the Infinite Abyss, where he comes to offer salvation to Raidou Kuzunoha XIV after discussing his dreams with Narumi. He only repeats the same line of eliminating dangerous objects and saving souls before it malfunctions and dies at the end of the fight.

• Ophanim's Shin Megami Tensei II design resembles the description of a Cherub in the Book of Ezekiel, mainly on how a Cherub has the heads of "a human, a lion, an ox, and an eagle". This design does not follow on how an Ophanim is supposed to look like in the Book of Ezekiel, mainly on it taking an appearance of a wheel.
