Longma or Bai Longma (白龍馬, lit. "White Dragon Horse") is the third son of the Dragon King of the West who possesses shapeshifting powers. In the novel Journey to the West, he committed capital crime by incinerating Jade Emperor's jewel but was pardoned from the death sentence after Guan Yin's mediation. In order to redeem his undoing, he is ordered to rendezvous with Tang Sanzang and assist him when he crosses the mountain on his way to India. However, he has accidentally swallowed Tang Sanzang's mount, Guan Yin then suggests that he shapeshifts into a white horse to serve as Tang Sanzang's steed. Longma keeps his identity a secret from his traveling companions for most of the story and is Tang Sanzang's longest disciple and witness.
