Bonaventure (C1-21)

The Bonaventure (C1-21) was an early Earth space warp capable starship.

In 2369, this ship appeared on a wall chart titled "Starship Chronology" in Keiko O'Brien's classroom and had the description "Discovery of the Space Warp". (DS9: "The Nagus") Later that year, and into the next year, a model of this ship was added to the classroom. (DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians")

Background information

In the Star Trek Chronology, it was this ship, only identified by its registry "C1-21"', that was credited with the discovery of space warp, which was until the release of Star Trek: First Contact somewhat accepted as "semi-canon". However First Contact firmly established the radically different design of the Phoenix as the first warp capable Earth ship, and all references to the Bonaventure being so were subsequently dropped from later reference works.

The Bonaventure was intended to be a predecessor to the Bonaventure (10281NCC), as confirmed by the creator of the wall display, Doug Drexler; "By the way, 'Bonaventure' was absolutely a nod to the animated show." It was this wall chart that established the name of the ship, as the Chronology had not provided one, only its registry. [1]

There have been several ships in the Royal Navy with the name HMS Bonaventure. A Canadian aircraft carrier was renamed HMCS Bonaventure in 1952.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (p. 54) mentions a prototype field device and an unmanned flight test vehicle from 2061, which predates all manned warp ships.

For further information on the display model, see: Bonaventure (C1-21) model.

Apocrypha

In Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology (1980), a Cochrane-class cruiser, the UNSS Bonaventure, was introduced as Earth's first warp drive ship. Utilizing an alien warp guidance system, she began Earth's warp drive era under the command of Captain Hadrian Huckleby, with a trip to Tau Ceti. This was four years after the first successful demonstration of warp technology.

In the novel Federation, Zefram Cochrane's first warp ship that traveled to Alpha Centauri was called the Bonaventure, conceivably the C1-21 or a sister ship (and thus still retaining the potential of becoming canon), and his later personal ship is called the Bonaventure II.
