Rank

In military and civilian service organizations of many intelligent cultures, rank (sometimes denoted by rank insignia on uniforms) is how the jobs of different personnel are organized in a hierarchy of authority.

Military ranks

In the history of several humanoid cultures, ranks have been used in naval organizations and other fighting forces. The ranking systems of Starfleet strongly resemble the United States military with some of the rank pips and badges successors to United States military ranks.

Other cultures have a variety of different titles and ranks, based on different languages and social characteristics. The Bajoran Militia and the Klingon Defense Force use ranks equivalent to the planet Earth's naval and ground forces.
