Mary Wiseman (born 30 July 1985; age 39) is the actress who played Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery.
She reprised her role in the Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Runaway", and also voiced the character as part of the Discovery-themed Star Trek Online expansion, Age of Discovery. She will also reprise the role in the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
After growing up in Milford, Pennsylvania and Gaithersburg, Maryland, she became interested in acting through the high school outreach program of the Washington D.C. Shakespeare Theatre. She earned a BFA in Theatre Arts at Boston University, before attending the Juilliard School's Drama Division, where she met her future husband Noah Averbach-Katz, who later played Ryn in the third season of Discovery. They were also in the same class as fellow Discovery actress Mary Chieffo and graduated in 2015. Wiseman's nickname at Juilliard was "Brassy Broad". [1] Wiseman and Averbach-Katz married in February 2019. The couple later divorced in October 2023.
Her first television credits were two appearances in the television series Craft & Burn (2012). In 2016 and 2017, she had guest spots on The Characters, Difficult People, and three episodes of Baskets (one episode featuring Bart McCarthy). In 2016 and 2017, she also had a recurring role in Longmire (with an episode featuring Raphael Sbarge).
Her theater credits include Sow and Weep, I Wanted it to Have a How & I Wanted it to Have a Verb, Clybourne Park, The Octoroon, The Skin of Our Teeth, and Therese Raquin.
She appeared in a supporting role in the film Marriage Story (2019, with Wallace Shawn, Rich Fulcher, and Bill Blair) and co-starred in Carole & Grey (2024, with Natalie Liconti). She also appeared in the short films Three Dates (2014), Health to the King (2018), and Type 1 (2023, with Noah Averbach-Katz).
