Osnullus

The Osnullus were a sentient species. By the late 2250s, members of this species were serving in Starfleet. (DIS: "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry")

Biology

They had large non-humanoid heads with no mouth, with otherwise humanoid bodies. They had six eyes, two large and four small. An individual's skin color could vary. Pink and purple skin were both possibilities. (DIS: "Point of Light")

History

Several members of this species served on the USS Discovery in 2257, including Ensign Arav. (DIS: "The Red Angel", "Jinaal")

In 2259, an Osnullus was depicted on a relief alongside other Federation member species in a Starfleet courtroom on Earth. (SNW: "Ad Astra per Aspera")

In the 32nd century, members of this species served in the Emerald Chain security force on Hima as well as in Starfleet. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 1", "Scavengers")

In 3190, Osnullus delegates were present at the Multilateral DMA Strategy Assembly and voted for diplomacy with Species 10-C. (DIS: "...But to Connect")

In 3191, an Osnullus archivist worked at the Eternal Gallery and Archive. (DIS: "Labyrinths")

Background information

Symbol and name

The name of the species was not spoken on screen, but was seen on a delegate's voting holo and a voting tally in DIS: "...But to Connect". A close-up of the tally was later released by graphic designer Timothy Peel. [1] Prior to "...But to Connect", the name was known from background sources.

Glenn Hetrick, Department Head of Prosthetic and Special F/X Makeup for Star Trek: Discovery, used the term "Osnullus" on the Alchemy Studios website. The website features images of the head sculpt and hand sculpt of this species. [2] The species had also been referred to as "Osnullus" by other production sources such as actress Avaah Blackwell and director/executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi. [3] [4]

Osnullus is a broken-Latin formation intended to express "mouthless", from Latin noun os, oris (mouth) + pronoun nullus (none).

Apocrypha

According to the Star Trek: Discovery Campaign Guide, Osnullus eat through specialized feeding ports in their fingers due to their lack of mouth. They have a caste-based society.
