Race was a categorization or classification of members of a species within a society. Distinctions for these groups could be based on physical qualities, such as skin color, and social qualities, such as national origin or citizenship.
Humans were one such species who referred to races defined by skin color, such as with white, black, and yellow people. (TOS: "The Omega Glory"; DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars", "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")
In 2378, Captain Kathryn Janeway noted that centuries beforehand in most places on Earth, only landowners of a particular gender and race had any rights. Over time, those rights were extended to all Humans, and later to thousands of other sentient species as Humans explored the Milky Way Galaxy. (VOY: "Author, Author")
