Where Sea Meets Sky

Captain Pike braves uncharted dangers!

Where Sea Meets Sky is a Pocket TOS novel – the sixth novel in The Captain's Table series – written by Jerry Oltion. Published by Pocket Books, it was first released in October 1998.

Summary

From the back cover
There's a bar called "The Captain's Table", where those who have commanded mighty vessels of every shape and era can meet, relax, and share a friendly drink or two with others of their calling. Sometimes a brawl may break out but it is all in the family, more or less. Just remember, the first round of drinks is always paid for with a story– fishy or not.
Years before Kirk took command, Captain Christopher Pike guided the Starship Enterprise on a five-year mission. Pike's journey took him to many new and unexplored realms, none more strange or perilous than a devastated star system where huge, space-faring lifeforms, vital to the survival of one inhabited star system, wreak havoc on the humanoid inhabitants of the other. Captain Pike must thrust the Enterprise into deadly danger as he fights to save one innocent civilization without dooming the other.

Background information

  • The concept of the "titans" came from a panel discussion Oltion was a panel member on, during a convention in Missouri in the mid-1980s, along with George Takei: "we came up with these cool space whales that scooped hydrogen from the atmospheres of gas giants for food and laid their eggs on terrestrial planets". When he was asked to contribute a Captain Pike entry for the Captain's Table series, Oltion recalled: "I cast about for the kind of story that would fit the rough-edged feel of the Enterprise and crew as we saw them in "The Cage", and finally realized that a Jules Verne kind of story would be perfect. The space whales immediately came to mind." (Voyages of Imagination, p. 429)
  • Oltion was unhappy with the decision by Pocket editor John Ordover to loop the stories presented in the series, by inserting the initial few pages of War Dragons at the end of his novel without an indication of what was happening. In Voyages of Imagination, Oltion recalled, annoyed, that many people had commented on the "bizarre" ending, when it had been outside his control entirely. (Voyages of Imagination, p. 429)
