The Cochrane-class was a Federation class VI colonial transport starship in Starfleet Colonial Operations Command service in the 23rd century, becoming active on reference stardate 1/9010.
Specifications
The Cochrane-class vessels originally crewed 36 officers and men, with room for up to 2,400 passengers (either troops or colonists). With a mark II upgrade brought into service on stardate 2/0311, the crew was increased to 38. Additionally, the Cochrane vessels could carry 240,000 metric tons of cargo, rated at 4,800 SCU (standard cargo units). The mark I vessels weighed 61,415 metric tons, while the weight on the uprated mark II was slightly less, at 61,150 tons. The Cochrane ships measured 370 meters in length, 210 meters in width and 110 meters in height. The Cochrane ships had 10 standard (6 person) personnel transporters, eight 22-person escape transporter stages and twelve cargo transporters (8 small stages and 4 larger stages). The control computer of the Cochrane vessels was of the L-13 type.
The Cochrane used warp engines were FWE-1 type, rated to cruise at warp factor 7 and max out at warp factor 9, although when fully loaded with passengers and cargo the speeds were reduced to warp 7 and 6, respectively. The Cochrane impulse engines were of the FIB-1 type. The Cochrane weapons had only a single dual-emitter phaser bank, a total of two phaser emitters, with forward, port and starboard firing arcs. The first series of Cochrane ships had FL-1 type phasers, while later mark II vessels had phasers of the FH-1 type. The vessels were initially defended by FSG model deflector shields, but were upgraded in mark II models to FSF model shields. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
History
This transport class was
for Zefram Cochrane, the discoverer of warp engine technology used by Humans. Vessels of this type are invariably escorted by ships of the Starfleet Military Operations Command.
By stardate 2/2306, these ships were no longer in production. Up to that point in the later 23rd century, 308 Cochrane vessels had been constructed, produced at Jupiter Station, with all mark I vessels inactive (as of stardate 2/0802), and 120 mark IIs in active service. Reserve fleets provided a home to 58 mark I and 12 mark II vessels. Over the years, 8 ships (6 mk I and 2 mk II) destroyed, 6 (all mk I) missing, 14 (12 mk I and 2 mk II) scrapped and 90 (64 mk I and 26 mk II) sold to private concerns. Background
The commission date of reference stardate 1/9010 coincides with the mid-2240s in the primary Star Trek timeline, around the year 2245. Presumably, a ship named USS Cochrane would be the prototype of this class, although such a vessel has yet to be mentioned.
