Games

Modding is very popular among Star Trek fans and there are many resources devoted to modifying existing Star Trek games. Mods in games can be as simple as adding or changing the stats of an existing element (usually a single ship/station, for example) or adding a new element. Some mods can add updated code for graphics, user interface or different characters. Since video game makers generally don't keep the license to support their existing Star Trek games, older games can be maintained through the process of copying them into new formats. It is generally accepted that this is only legal if there is no profit or resale of the modification, and if the resulting product would not detract from or reproduce a licensed product on the current market.

Unsupported older roleplaying games are still playable and are readily available as collectibles. Subsequent Star Trek RPGs have used different styles of play, and there have been fan-made support resources for translating newer gaming concepts into older forms of game-play, and vice versa. Again, it is only legal to circulate these on a not-for-profit basis.
