Fort Knox

Fort Knox was a United States Army post in Kentucky. The United States Bullion Depository was a fortified vault building located near Fort Knox, which was used to store a large portion of United States official gold reserves, as well as other precious items belonging to the United States of America.

The depository was often conflated with the military base. Both seem to have been merged into a single facility by the 24th century.

History and specifics

Following the Third World War, the gold reserves of Fort Knox had been depleted to the point of nonexistence. (ST novelization: Star Trek: First Contact)

After money became obsolete, the military installation was turned into a museum. Tom Paris stated that no one had broken into the place at all until it was turned into a museum, and that two Ferengi tried it, but failed. (VOY episode: "Dark Frontier")

In the 2360s decade, Fort Knox held 52 tons of gold. A vast clearing surrounded the vault building. Its main entrance was protected by a maglock. The vault itself was encased by a massive wall composed of rodinium and duranium, and blocked with a force field. The facility was defended by Starfleet Security personnel stationed remotely in the United Earth Security Complex monitor room aboard UES Orbital Station 7.

In 2364, officers Hiro Kanegawa and Adeola Okoro tracked Ferengi intruders Kayron and Letek as they managed to get past outer defenses to the vault's wall. The thieves were apprehended before they could attempt to use pattern enhancers to beam gold out from the other side of the wall. (TNG - Explorer short story: "Attempted Break-in")

In an interview with Jake Sisko early in the 25th century, Vic Fontaine remarked that, from his point of view, the year 1962 was as unchanging as the gold at Fort Knox. (STO novel: The Needs of the Many)
