Drai

Toskhunterstds9rpgrrr
A Drai.

The Drai are a group of humanoid aliens from the Gamma Quadrant. Known as the Hunters (ochshea in their own language), they pursue and kill the Tosk, who are created for just that purpose, yet afford the Tosk a great deal of respect.

History and specifics

In the year 2369, a Hunter starship entered the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant through the Bajoran wormhole in their search for a Tosk, who had taken refuge on Starbase Deep Space 9. Miles O'Brien assisted the Tosk in escaping from the Hunters. (DS9 episode: "Captive Pursuit")

First Splinter timeline

During the Dominion War, the Hunters were allies of the Dominion. (DS9 novel: Rising Son)

In 2376, the Hunter Elshada led a hunt pursuing a Tosk who had sought refuge aboard the Even Odds. Elshada and his fellow Hunters later discovered the Tosk on the Eav'oq homeworld and killed him. (DS9 novel: Rising Son)

In 2386, Jean-Luc Picard spoke to high warden Joden, who still considered that Miles O'Brien had interfered with a Drai Hunt. (ST - Prey novel: Hell's Heart)

Background

A sketch in The Making of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine gives the species name of the Hunters as the Drai.

According to DS9 production sources, the Hunters were scripted to appear in "The Search" as members of the Dominion, but their role was cut from the final episode. Robert Hewitt Wolfe also established, unofficially in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, that "the same people who breed the Tosks as gifts to the hunters, breed the Jem'Hadar as well", explaining some of the similarities between both reptilian, genetically engineered species.
