Iran

Middle East 1992
The Middle East in 1992.

Iran was a nation-state in southwest Asia on planet Earth, historically known as Persia. It was the center of a vast empire from the 7th century BCE to the 4th century BCE, when the region was conquered by Alexander the Great.

History and specifics

A mercenary Greek army sent to conquer Persia ended up isolated thousands of miles from their home. Anabasis by Xenophon recorded the events, including the point where Persian Prince Cyrus was killed. (TOS novel: Spock, Messiah!, TNG novel: Dark Mirror)

The Persians invaded Greece, where they fought the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae. It was regarded as a hopeless battle of the Persian Empire against 300 Spartans. (DS9 episode & novelization: What You Leave Behind, DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Cathedral, ST - Section 31 novel: Abyss)

Trelane kept a display of pennants and battle flags on Gothos, some of which he'd recreated from ancient Persia. (TOS - Star Trek 11 novelization: The Squire of Gothos)

In the 1970s, Gary Seven rescued five-year-old Khan Noonien Singh and several other Augments from a bomb by beaming them 1,500 kilometers away, to Tehran in Iran. (Speculations - Strange New Worlds 10 short story: "Time Line")

In the early 1980s, events in Iran gave Seven and Roberta Lincoln problems, which Lincoln would reflect on in 1989 as she watched the Berlin Wall fall. Later, Khan was linked by some to the natural death of Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. (ST - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1)

Augment geologist Shirin Azar was a native of Persia. (TOS novel: To Reign in Hell: The Exile of Khan Noonien Singh)

Iranians were historically enemies of the Arabian people, a fact that briefly came to the mind of Ensign Faisal Prince during a stressful mission with fellow Ensign Rustam Kavousi, a Human of Iranian descent from the colony world of New Persia. The two 23rd century men were, of course, able to disregard this history and put their temporary anger toward each other aside quickly. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

Commander Atish Khatami, who was promoted to captain of the USS Endeavour in the 23rd century, was of Iranian origin. (VAN novel: Storming Heaven, SKR novel: Second Nature)

Alternate realities

In the Kelvin timeline according to Khan Noonien Singh, Augments absorbed Iran into the Central Asian Union in September 1992. By 1996, Iran was part of the Khanate before the Augment dictatorships were overthrown. (TOS - Khan comics: "Issue 2", "Issue 3")

In the mirror universe, the Persian Empire vied with Greece for control over the Mediterranean region, but Alexander the Great won out, as in the prime reality. (Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook, Decipher RPG module: Through a Glass, Darkly)

Culture

The primary language of Iran is Farsi (also known as "Persian"). (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

Curried koofteh meatballs were among the region's native dishes. (TAS - Log Six novelization: The Practical Joker)

The Life of Alexander the Great told the history of Alexander in Greece and Persia. (ST - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1)
