Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean Sea on Earth. Originally settled by American aboriginals, it became a colony of Spain in the 16th century, then became a possession of the United States of America in 1898.
History and specifics
Puerto Rico, part of the Greater Antilles islands, was the fourth largest island in the Caribbean. (Last Unicorn RPG - Holodeck Adventures module: The Falcon's Gold)
In 1939, Puerto Rico held an exhibition at the World's Fair in New York. (DS9 novelization: Far Beyond the Stars)
In 2045, Puerto Rico operated a large radio telescope, but it did not detect the launch of a DY-100-class starship in October of that year. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)
Sonya Gomez was a native of Puerto Rico, and spent her leave time following the near-destruction of the USS da Vinci at her parents' home in the island-municipality of Vieques. (SCE eBook: Breakdowns)
- Puerto Rico's political status in the Star Trek era is unknown, other than the assumption it is part of United Earth. It may possibly have become a U.S. state (re: the 52-star flag seen in TNG episode: "The Royale"), or it may be part of the Caribbean Alliance (established in TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart).
Kelvin timeline
In September 1992, Augment Dictator Alexander Newton annexed Puerto Rico into the North American Coalition. By 1996, Augment infighting led to Puerto Rico becoming part of Newton's New American Empire. By the end of 1996, the Augment dictatorships were overthrown. (TOS - Khan comics: "Issue 2", "Issue 3")
