Richard Réti

Richard Réti (18 May 1889 - 26 June 1929) was a well-respected 20th century Earth chess player, author, endgame studier. He invented the Réti Opening, which he used to defeat one of the then-world champions.

Earth Starfleet Captain Erika Hernandez attempted to use chess as a medium to reconnect with her estranged first officer Veronica Fletcher. Fletcher initially hid the chess board, but eventually relented, and Hernandez expressed her surprise when Fletcher used the Réti Opening with the King's Indian Attack.
