The Tempest

The Tempest is a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novel by Susan Wright. It was published in February 1997.

Description

When a ferocious plasma storm strikes the entire Bajoran system, Deep Space Nine becomes a port under siege, filled to overflowing with stranded space travelers, unpredictable aliens, and Klingon smugglers. Worf and Odo find themselves tested to the limit as they struggle to control the chaos that has consumed the station.
But even greater danger faces Dax and botanist Keiko O'Brien when they must fly a runabout into the very heart of the storm -- and encounter a strange new form of life!

Summary

Commander Worf is methodically inspecting a Sattar vessel that has docked at Deep Space 9, much to the annoyance of Senior Mate Cali. The Sattar Collective are subjects of the Klingon Empire and Odo’s security team detected evidence of solotine, an explosive. Worf finds no definitive proof, but is able to avoid a plasma burn from a defective conduit. Cali launches into a tirade about Klingons, while Worf grants permission for the vessel to depart.

Soon after, the scout ship Ceres is brought to the station after being attacked on the edge of a plasma storm. Worf wonders if the Sattar could be responsible, but other suspects could be the Klingons, the Dominion or the Maquis. One of the crew of the Ceres thinks that their attacker was a Klingon ship,

The crew study the plasma storm detected by the Ceres and while it appears it will not hit the station, shockwaves from the storm will. Life on the station continues as normal, with Keiko and Molly visiting from Bajor and Kasidy Yates visiting as well.

The storm changes course and starts to head for the station, with Commander Dax suggesting that it is bring drawn by the wormhole. Sisko orders the wormhole off limits to all ships and as a result the number of people aboard the station increases and some of the cargo bays are converted into shelters.

A Klingon vessel, the Katon, is detected near the station, but the Klingons refuse to dock, forcing Sisko to use a tractor beam to force them to do so. Worf wonders if the Klingon ship is responsible for the attack on the Ceres.
