Tyrtaeus II

Tyrtaeus II was a planet, the second planet of the Tyrtaeus system, located in Federation space near the Romulan Neutral Zone in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrant. It was the homeworld of the Tyrtaean civilization, a Human colony.

History and specifics

The planet appeared as a green and blue orb from space. The settled regions on the main continent supported a generally pleasant, dry climate, with clear air and moderate temperatures. The northern continent had an extremely harsh climate.

In the 2160s, a group of isolationists left Earth and settled on Tyrtaeus II, which at the time seemed an ideal location on fringes of Federation space.

Over time, it turned out to be too close to the Romulan Neutral Zone. In the 2220s, a border skirmish prompted the Tyrtaeans to reluctantly join the Federation for their own defense should there ever be another war with the Romulan Empire.

In 2264, a Federation envoy visited Tyrtaeus II and signed a treaty protecting the planet's colonial autonomy.

In 2267, a computer virus hidden in a Federation-wide database update inadvertently erased all of the planet's historical and medical records, and also damaged their subspace communications systems. After aiding the societies on Cynur IV and Emben III, the starship USS Enterprise visited Tyrtaeus II to repair the databases. Following the mission, ship's personnel were granted shore leave in wilderness areas, far away from the colony towns so as to respect their privacy. (TOS novel: Heart of the Sun)
