Velex (planet)

Velex is a Class M planet in either the Alpha or Beta Quadrants. The planet is normally uninhabited except for a small scientific team, and is a Federation protectorate.

Beneath the surface of the planet are numerous machines that were left by a previous civilization, who also left a large structure on the surface of the planet. There were also vast fields of grain.

By the 24th century, the planet had been abandoned for thousands of years. A private company sent a team to Velex led by Barbara Hollitt to further investigate the planet. In 2369, the planet was the site of peace talks between the Klingon Empire and the Hidran - who had been their enemies for many years. In that year, the grain was discovered to be artificial in nature. Composed of nano-technology, Velexian grain had healing properties, but it could be harmful or even fatal to individuals with artificial implants. Long-term use of the grain was also taxing to a person's immune system. Hollitt recommended the Velexian grain to her company as an occasional supplement. (TNG novel: Foreign Foes)
