Activities and lessons learned
editActivities
editThis was the fifth year of Wiki Loves Monuments in Spain. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 Wiki Loves Monuments in Spain was organized by Wikimedia Spain and Amical Wikimedia, organizing two different contests. This was the second edition where there was only one contest in the Spanish territory. For the first time we decided to focus the contest on media of monuments and municipalities that had not been available in Commons until the contest. Indeed, the first prize went to the best picture of a monument not available so far, and the second one to th best municipality not available so far. The third price went to the best monument picture overall (which had been already been available).
There were 11 volunteers involved in the project:
- Poco a poco: monuments lists in Wikipedia, web site, Commons campaign, templates and categories, general coordination, improvement (description/categories) of uploaded images, coordination Flickr and award ceremony and preparation of the grant
- Pedro J Pacheco: jury coordination, review Flickr and awards ceremony
- Lmbugallo: jury
- Discasto: monuments lists in Wikipedia, jury and initial review of images
- Harpagornis: Flickr and initial review of images
- 19Tarrestnom65: monuments lists in Wikipedia, initial review of images, prizes and certificates
- B25es: Wikiproject No municipality without a photograph
- Millars: spreading
- Rodelar: monuments lists in Wikipedia, initial review of images, spreading
- Kadellar: monuments lists in Wikipedia
- Platonides: techical issues (bot for Flickr images and stats)
Partners
editIn this edition we got an important part of the costs covered by our sponsor, Mensa España, in total 1,132 EURO including the venue and catering for the awards ceremony and the first prize.
On wiki
edit- Wiki Loves Monuments
We created the pages that the project needed on Wikimedia Commons and its categories: commons:Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain and commons:Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain. We also created additional lists of monuments for the contest focusing on those monuments that we didn't have on Commons. For the coordination of the on-wiki work we created a new wikiproject exclusively for WLM in the Spanish Wikipedia along with other views to have an instant overview about the areas that need work. We also improved the lists already on Wikipedia in a systematic way, adding images uploaded, adding the Commons categories, new monuments and fixing mistakes of the lists (municipalities, addresses, names, links to articles, etc.)
We created for the first time in WLM an stats page, following the lessons learned from WLE 2015. On Wikimedia Commons we worked categorizing all images uploaded to the contest, and created all required categories for that purpose. We checked all images, and, as you can see in the stats page we created different categories for images that had to the excluded from the prizes. We realized that many people uploaded images from other countries or pictures whose subject was not a monument.
We had also to fix mistakes in categories, descriptions, names or templates of the images uploaded with 100% coverage of the uploaded material.
Spreading
editOne of the activities was "Promote the contests online and offline (while other activities of the chapter)". The spreading of the photo contest was done through different ways:
- Banner on Wikimedia projects. This is actually the most powerful tool Wikimedia community has. Wikimedia projects have millions of visits everyday, so a banner on them provide us a great impact. The banner redirects to our web site, available in different languages. Our site was given as example of site web for Wiki Loves Monuments in the mailing list.
- Web site (wikilmes). One of the activities listed at the grant proposal was "Preparation of photo contest website". That site web was created in 2011 but every year we to improve it (lessons learned regarding contest rules, appearance). It provides information about the prizes, partners, jury, lists of monuments in different Wikipedias, and instructions about how to participate in four languages (Spanish, English, Catalan and Galician).

- Social networks, blog and mailing lists. We realize that this kind of activities provides us a good amount of new followers and also let us say hello to other communities and in different Wikimedia projects. Also the Twitter account of Marca España or several Spanish embassies twitted about Wiki Loves Monuments in Spain.
We spread the news through mailing lists, different village pumps and wikiprojects, social networks (Flickr, Twitter and Facebook, for instance an event on Facebook).
- Blog. We wrote different posts for our blog:
- Flickr. Like in previous years, Wikimedia Spain created a Flickr group to gain new users or at least more and better images from Flickr users. See Flickr group for Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain. More than 2,800 images were uploaded to that group under free license. One of the activities written at the grant was "Transfer material from Flickr to Commons", so, later we uploaded those files to Wikimedia Commons. The most productive participants had already participated in previous editions and the result (only one Flickr picture in the top 10) was not as good as in former editions and the extra effort to include these pictures causes that we have less time for the jury. We have decided to discontinue the upload via Flickr as it should be time for those consolidated Flickr participants to upload via Commons if they want to take part in future WLM editions.

- No municipipality without a photograph
To give some boost to the already in June started wikiproject No municipality in Spain without a photograph we included pictures of municipalities into the WLM contest, which did not have any picture in Commons. We gathered only 174 pictures that correspond to 85 different municipalites, which is far from the ambitious _target that we had set (865). A missing banner for this topic (we could not customize the WLM banner due to lack of time of admins) and not enough promotion before and during the contest for this category are probably the reason for the low result. We have also realised that the _target of 865 in one month was not really realistic, but we could have achieved 200. WLM did help to get more collaborators for this project and in the meanwhile we have reduced the number of municipalities by 633 approaching the WLM _target.
Jury and selection of winners
editOther activities planned were "Selection of the jury", "Selection of top 10 and winners of special categories" and "Nomination of winners (both, photo and writing contest)".
The jury for Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain had five members, selected by the organization. They were a mix of people related with Wikimedia, photography and monuments: Mónica Prats Castelví (photographer), Maria Teresa García Montes (art expert and historian), Luis Miguel Bugallo Sánchez (wikimedian and long-time amateur photographer), Miguel Ángel Monjas (wikimedian) and Joaquín Zamora (photographer). In addition Pedro J Pacheco was also their coordinator. The jury members divided the total amount of pictures among them, with the condition that every picture should be revised by at least two members, and each one provided a selection. However, some of them decided to see all the pictures.
Before publishing Wiki Loves Monuments winners, Wikimedia Spain published the 130 finalists (commons:Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain - Finalists). That tives us the opportunity to show them on social networks, and the participants can look for their pictures among the finalists. In this way if a photographer is not among the winners at least she/he can still find himself/herself among the highlighted contributors. The jury had to select the winners from a total of 9,866 images. commons:Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain. The jury selected also the winners of the special category for the best picture of a new monument. Wikimedia Spain members did select in an internal voting the best picture of a new municipality.
The ten finalists were:

Awards ceremony and sending prizes
editThis year the awards ceremony took place at the Hotel Vertice in Bormujo, a neighborhood of Seville, in the south of Spain. The venue and catering was sponsored by Mensa España. The ceremony included both the winners of WLE and of WLM, in order to save resources. 2 of the winners of WLE (3rd best picture in Spain and 2nd in Portugal) and 3 of the winners of WLM (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th best pictures of monuments, best picture of a new municipality and most municipalities photographed) attended the event along with some members of WMES and general public.
The ceremony included also 2 talks about Wikimedia Commons given by Diego Delso, winner of WLM in Spain, and the user with most Featured Pictures and Quality Images on Wikimedia Commons.
-
Diego Delso held 2 talks about Wikimedia Commons during the event: about quality images and about upload of images to Commons in a Wiki Loves contest.
-
Pedro J Pacheco, coordinator of the jury and presenter of the ceremony, gave the prize for the best picture of a new municipality to Jaime Delso.
-
Pedro J Pacho and Monica Prats, jury member of WLE, gave the prize to Diego Delso for placing 5 images under the top 10, including the winner.
-
Sara Bento explains how she took the picture that ranked 2nd in WLE in Portugal.
Before the event we sent e-mails to all winners and collected their data. At the ceremony apart from the prizes also personalized certificates were handed out, and for those who did not attend the event, we sent them by mail.
Lessons learned
edit- What worked well?
- One awards ceremony for both, Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth, to save money and organitational efforts
- We got an important portion of the cost of the contest covered with help of sponsors.
- Focusing on material not available in Commons pays-off. You get less pictures but they ar more useful for the movement and the usages stats go up.
- With help of the photo contest we achieved an imoortant improvement of the monuments listings in Wikipedia for both, the general reader of Wikipedia and future editions of WLM.
- All pictures of the contest were reviewed one by one and, if required, categorized and got a suitable description. How many organizers can affirm that? ;)
- What didn't work?
- It was tedious and time-consuming to distinguish between pictures of already documented monuments vs so far not documented monuments. For this we will need in future contezt editions support of a bot.
- The venue of the award ceremony was too far from the center of Seville and it was hard to attract general public.
- The jury tool was good but we missed some fearures (e.g. if a jury believes that an image should make it to the next round, then the other juries should not review that one anymore as one supporting vote is enough) and we depended on external help to have the tool ready after each round (loosing some precious time).
- A lot of people are drawn to participate through the Wikipedia banner, which was generic (only the language was different but the message the same) and could not be tailored for this edition to stress that we mainly looked for material not available in Commons so far.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- Design a method to automatically caregorize as "monuments already available" those with a monument included in a list to be put together before the review process begins.
- It would be great for all parties if the chapter in charge of the organization of a photo contedt could administer the jury tool on its own. Regarding new features, if the code were open we could all help to improve it.
Learning patterns
editOutcomes and impact
editOutcomes
edit- Provide the original project goal here.
- The overall purpose of WLM is to increase the material related to monuments with a free license on Wikimedia Commons, improve the quality content and use that material in the Wikimedia projects. With the scope that we are asking funding for we want to finance the cost of the awards for the contest winners.
- The prizes are a stimulus to increase the amount of people participating in the contest and sowith increase the amount of material in Wikimedia Commons that can be used in different articles and the articles on Wikipedia, along with new contributors to the Wikimedia movement, or increase the participation of former or current users or editors. At the same time and without charge of the WMF there is a widen online promotion of the contest and the Wikimedia projects in Spain.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
- Yes. The amount of material related to monuments under free license on Wikimedia Commons was increased by 9,866 images. These images let editors increase the quality of articles; 1,234 images are already used, there are 311 Quality Images[3] and 16 Featured pictures[4] on Wikimedia Commons. The best figures ever in terms of awarded content, although the overall amount of pictures was smaller than previous years due to the focus on non available content in Commons. The quality and quantity of articles about Spanish monuments was also increased.
- The promotion of Wikimedia projects in Spain was achieved. There were 30 press mentions and more than 4 million page views of the web site. There were 188 participants in the photo contest, most of them new users.
Progress towards _targets and goals
editProject metrics
Project metrics | _target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
200 participants | 247 | the amount of participants was 247 in total: 61 in Flickr and 186 in Commons (excluding the Flickr bot) [5]
20 new users | 101 | according to Wikimetrics
5,000 uploaded images | 9,866 uploaded images | 9,866 (7,053 Commons + 2,813 Flickr[6] uploaded with Wiki-Bot)[7]
200 images used in articles after 6 months | 2,238 images used in articles after 6 months | the amount of photos used after 6 months is 2,238 images in total whereas 1,277 of them are distinct images[8]
Reduction of 865 (from 1730 to 865) municipalities without a picture in Commons | Reduction of 85 municipalities | a drastic reduction by 50% of municipalities without a picture could not be achieved. 174 pictures[9] of 85 different municipalities without picture so far could be gathered. This is just 10% of the _targeted reduction. We are continuing our efforts in this area with help of a Wikiproject[10] and from the initial 2239 municipalities without picture in Spain, we're now down to 1651 and counting. In other words, we didn't achieved our goal but we looked for an alternative way to reach it, or rather reduce it to 0.
100 monuments have a first picture in Commons | 560 monuments have a first picture in Commons | the amount of pictures of new monuments is 1691[11] with an average of 3 pictures for each new monument the result of 560 new monuments is far beyond the _target of 100.
30 mentions in press | 30 mentions in press | the mentions are listed in a dedicated page[12] |

Global Metrics
editWe are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees. In addition to the measures of success for your specific program (in above section), please use the table below to let us know how your project contributed to the Global Metrics. We know that not all projects will have results for each type of metric, so feel free to put "0" where necessary.
- Next to each required metric, list the actual outcome achieved through this project.
- Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome. For example, if you were funded for an edit-a-thon which resulted in 0 new images, your explanation might be "This project focused solely on participation and articles written/improved, the goal was not to collect images."
For more information and a sample, see Global Metrics.
Metric | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
1. # of active editors involved | <86
2. # of new editors | 101 | |
3. # of individuals involved | 257 | 247 participants + 5 jury members + colaborators that did not contribute with images |
4a. # of new images/media added to Wikimedia articles/pages | 2,122 | see above |
4b. # of new images/media uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (Optional) | 9,866 | see above |
5. # of articles added or improved on Wikimedia projects | not relevant | no edition contest organized this year along with the photographic contest |
6. Absolute value of bytes added to or deleted from Wikimedia projects | not relevant | no edition contest organized this year along with the photographic contest |
- Learning question
- Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
- Instead of asking everybody to upload pictures of all monuments they like, we are focusing on the medias we miss in Commons. For this we've created wikiprojects[13][14] in the Spanish Wikipedia and keep the participants motivated as we've a clear _target in front of us.
Additional metrics
edit- Another metrics can be the amount of Featured, Quality and Valued images. It is true that many pictures with a good quality were not presented to this process because many users, and of course new or user who only participate in this kind of projects are not interested in that or do not know about it.

- Cost per image and participant. According to Grants:Evaluation/Evaluation reports/2015/Wiki Loves Monuments, "Wiki Loves Monuments implementations generated an average of nearly 4,000 uploads and cost around $25 USD per participant and $0.90 USD per upload." In this case, Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain generated 9,866 uploads and cost around $6.96 USD or 5.25 € per participant and $$0.15 USD or 0.13 € per upload. The cost per distinct used image was 1.02 € or $1.16 USD, versus an average of $6.31 USD in 2014 in Wiki Loves Monuments.[18]
Impact
editWhat impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?
Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects?
- We didn't as we decided now to focus on material (monuments and municipalites) that was not available in Commons. We've not encouraged the contribution of any material but only some, which is harder to get. We are convinced by this change of course and next year we will not allow the upload of existing material in Commons.
Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects?
- Option B: We have got very good image usage figures as an important portion of the images belong to items for which we had awaited the first picture.
We could identify Wiki Loves Monuments as a stand-alone photo competitions with no integration activities (lower impact potential), but in this case it had an integration activity. The high amount of images, their use on many Wikimedia projects like Wikipedias in several languages, and the amount of Featured and Quality images could be a signal of improving the quality of the information provided in Wikimedia projects.
Option C: How did you increase the reach (readership) of one or more Wikimedia projects?
- Option C: Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Spain increased reach of Wikimedia projects, because it had an impact in society thanks to press mentions and social networks. The fact that the amount of new users is 5 times bigger than the _target is a good proof of that.
