Request for correction of interface errors on Kyrgyz Wikipedia

Status:    Done

Hello there! Kyrgyz Wikipedia currently does not have interface administrators. Therefore, I can not report some interface errors of this project, which I have seen for several years:

  1. If you go to this project using this hyperlink, you will see that an empty banner with the inscription "жашыруу" (English: Hide) will appear at the top. Even if you hide this empty banner using this button, then by going to another page of this project or simply refreshing the page, you will find that the banner has appeared again! This banner appears over and over again and has no meaning because it is empty. It also does not disappear forever like other banners after clicking the "Hide" button. Please remove this empty banner from this project.
  2. If you go to this project and turn on Vector 2010, you will see that the bell next to your username is crooked and it looks really terrible. Please correct the location of the bell button.

Thank you! -- Nurtenge (talk) 07:05, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

@Nurtenge"asn-dismissable-notice" This is not a work for Stewards or Global Sysops. This is CentralNotice. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 15:11, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
I don't see how this can be related to CentralNotice. I checked Special:BannerAllocation and there is currently only one banner running on kywiki – but only for logged-in users, while the described empty banner also shows when I open a random page while being logged out.
I thought the issue might be, that MediaWiki:Sitenotice wasn't entirely empty, but after clearing the page the empty banners still appears. --Johannnes89 (talk) 15:55, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Seems to be a reoccurrence of the problem from phab:T347645 ? — xaosflux Talk 16:26, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
OK maybe not. This does not seem to be from sitenotice (as that appears above this box when activated). — xaosflux Talk 16:33, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
It should be - to disable the site notice. — JJMC89(T·C) 16:34, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
The issue is with ky:MediaWiki:Gadget-AdvancedSiteNotices.js, which is adding the notice (via ky:MediaWiki:Common.jsky:MediaWiki:Scripts.js). — JJMC89(T·C) 16:40, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, yes just went down THAT rabbit hole. There is an entire huge pile of loaders upon loaders coming in via common.js on kywiki, bringing scripts in from subpages, other projects, etc. @Bosogo: (only kywiki sysop) - is it safe to say there is nobody actively maintaining all of this on kywiki anymore? — xaosflux Talk 16:57, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Defaulting out much of this would probably be a good idea. — xaosflux Talk 16:59, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
@Xaosflux Thank you for mentioning me.
@Aaharoni-WMF Do you remember this issue?) I still haven't asked about the banner. Maybe we can do something here. Bosogo (talk) 17:19, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
@Bosogo most of the problem is that there are so many imported scripts going on at kywiki, including many attempts to import broken or missing scripts as well as loading things through scripts that really should be gadgets -- coupled with a lack of technical maintainers on the project (at least a lack of ones with time to work on this). It may be best to try returning to defaults until there are available maintainers. Is there enough of an active community to discuss that strategy? — xaosflux Talk 14:47, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
@Xaosflux No, there are no discussions. Only personal initiative. I have notified the community about this discussion, but there is no reaction yet. We had a generation gap at kywiki - almost everyone who contributes is a new editor. As you said, we don't have any technical specialists. I think our community will accept any technical solution, the main thing is to solve the problem, and from now on we will take this area under control. How can we return to the default settings? Bosogo (talk) 10:48, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
@Bosogo for the most part, we could blank the pages: w:ky:MediaWiki:Common.js and w:ky:MediaWiki:Common.css - that would turn off almost all of the local customizations that apply to everyone, including readers (it would not change users that individually have custom scripts). This would also turn off the large list of scripts loading in w:ky:МедиаВики:Scripts.js. These changes can be undone, however due to caching it may take up to 15 mins for this to be visible.
Regarding only the very specific item that started this thread, we could just turn off that one script by editing that Scripts.js file to stop loading that one script.
If your project gets a volunteer that knows javascript and css you can have a local discussion to make them an "interface administrator" (normally this is someone that qualifies to also be an administrator on your project) so they can edit those project-wide script control pages themselves.
Whichever direction you want is fine - what we don't really have cycles for is maintaining dozens of custom scripts. I hope this information helps, let us know how you would like to proceed. — xaosflux Talk 11:08, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
@Xaosflux Thanks for the options. Let's try it. Bosogo (talk) 11:22, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
@Bosogo sorry - to be clear, do you want just that one script removed, or default the entire common file? (Either of these can be easily reverted). — xaosflux Talk 15:31, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
@Xaosflux one script. Bosogo (talk) 16:48, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Done @Bosogo: the kywiki 'Gadget-AdvancedSiteNotices.js' import has been disabled, this seem to be clearing the symptom reported above. Suggest you continue a community discussion for how you want to deal with your other local script support. Ping me if this caused any problems. — xaosflux Talk 16:52, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
@Xaosflux Thank you.
I haven't delved into the technical aspects enough yet. Do I understand correctly that these scripts need to be replaced with gadgets? You mentioned broken and missing scripts, is it possible to remove/disable them too?
There is also a description of the scripts on w:ky:MediaWiki:Scripts.js in a foreign language( Bosogo (talk) 17:10, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Well, you don't need any of those running for your project to keep working. — xaosflux Talk 17:19, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
@Xaosflux I must have tired you out, but the second problem is about the bell in Vector 2010 (the bell shift occurs not only in Wikipedia, but also in Commons, Wikidata, when the interface is switched to Kyrgyz). Have you ever met someone like this before? Thank you. Bosogo (talk) 18:56, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
That would not have anything to do with scripts on your project. I was able to reproduce it and opened a bug: phab:T373772. You can follow up on that report on phab. — xaosflux Talk 20:28, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

DYK @SWWP

Status:    Not done

Hi.

We are in need of smart template for our DYK at Swahili Wikipedia. Our community does not have a regular habit of changing the DYK entries quite often. To avoid unnecessary predicament, smart template will do much better because we will add so many entries at the same time... possibly one-year entries. And they will rotate themselves. Would someone be so kind to help us create or improve the existing one?.User:Muddyb (Talk) 09:16, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Not done @Muddyb: while we can move a script in to production for you, this is not the team to write (and have to maintain) custom templates or scripts for your project. You can ask for help on how to write something to meet your needs over at Tech. Once it is ready to go, if none of the swwiki administrators have permission (e.g. if it requires updating an interface gadget) feel free to ask for the move to be done here. — xaosflux Talk 22:36, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

Closing the discussion about admin expiration @ rowiki

Status:    Done

Since rowiki does not have any bureaucrats and the discussion possibly affects all admins, I want to ask one of the Stewards to close the discussion about admin expiration at rowiki. The participation has been significant according to our history and no message has been sent in the last week. --Strainu (talk) 11:26, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

@Strainu: I had a look and have determined that there is a consensus in favor of the proposal, and I have left a comment in the discussion accordingly. So   Done, but I would encourage rowiki to either elect a bureaucrat or modify the policy to allow administrators to close these discussion. EPIC (talk) 12:15, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! Strainu (talk) 14:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Request to add sr.wiki to the GS wikiset

Request to create interface text on trwikibooks

Status:    Not done

Dear stewards! I am trying do a block requests policy essay on the trwikibooks. However, I need your help because there are no active sysops and no interface editors in trwikibooks and I do not have permission to create this interface text page. This interface text allows the following button (Yeni talep ekleyin/Add new request) to work. Thus, a blocking request is formed. would be grateful if you have the ability to create this interface page and configure it for trwikibooks. :) --Bright 01:54, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

On hold @Brightt11: please localize the script as appropriate in your sandbox here: b:tr:Kullanıcı:Brightt11/MediaWiki:KETForm.js. When done, please reply here and we can move it to the message namespace. — xaosflux Talk 15:08, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Excuse me for the late reply. I localized the script as you appropriated, completed the move process and our button is working. There is only a problem with the request creation form. Bright 18:58, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
@Brightt11: the script has been moved to the correct location and your template updated, however trwikibooks doesn't have a withJS handler hooked in to tr:b:MediaWiki:Common.js - what are you expecting will execute that script? — xaosflux Talk 22:31, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
No response above and there doesn't seem to be anyone active on that project that would manage custom scripts; only active admin on project is @Joseph:. Joseph, is this a workflow that would likely even be used? — xaosflux Talk 13:42, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Xaosflux, this script is used in Turkish Wikipedia. It is a form to create a "user block request" for another user. In my opinion, In Wikibooks, as we're a small wiki compared to Wikipedia, there's not extensive need for such forms. There are 3 user blocks in the last 3 years. I believe we can bring this matter again when it is needed. Joseph (talk) 14:15, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the update, I'm going to not done this one for now. The old way to do things like this was to hook a hack in to the site common.js; the new way for one-off pages would be via mw:Template gadgets (which still require someone to write and maintain). — xaosflux Talk 14:27, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Not done per above. — xaosflux Talk 14:27, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

Remove styles from Common.css on huwiktionary

Status:    Done

Please remove lines 288 to 306 from MediaWiki:Common.css on huwiktionary because they don’t play nicely with Vector 2022 (which is now the default skin there), play extremely badly with night mode, and IMO don’t make much sense to begin with. As the third argument is particularly opinionated, I asked the community, but nobody replied for nearly two months, i.e. no opposition. (Hungarian Wiktionary has no interface admins.) Thanks in advance! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 07:41, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

Revert inappropriate edit on idwiki

Status:    Not done

Can someone please revert id:Special:Diff/26317917, which inserted a large chunk of unrelated English text into an article? I was blocked from reverting this by a local edit filter, and I don't know the language enough to find the wiki's process for making edit requests. Omphalographer (talk) 00:16, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Not done idwiki has over 40 admins, you may contact them here: w:id:Wikipedia:Permintaan_perhatian_pengurus. — xaosflux Talk 00:43, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
Fair enough, requested there. Omphalographer (talk) 01:08, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
