Twitter handles

edit

Hi. I wonder if a table format might be more appropriate? See this edit as an example. Feel free to revert back as you may wish. Adambro 19:46, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely, the table is far more readable. I'll switch them over. I was just getting them up there. Dgultekin 20:40, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for posting the facebook list, we can really use stats like those. I hope you dont mind but I linked the list of twitter handles from the social media page as well. Thanks again for your help.--Theo10011 22:04, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

RE: Fundraising Translators

edit

Hello Dgultekin. I got your call for the fundraising project in trwiki. You did not tell me where to respond but I thought this might be the right place. I'm sorry to tell you that I don't have enough free time to work on this project. Good luck and best regards... -Tembelejderha 22:21, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for responding Tembelejderha, I understand that you are busy, good luck with everything! --Dgultekin 22:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Alright, I am new here (arriving from sr.wp). What is to be done? :) 本 Mihajlo [ talk ] 22:53, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcome! Our first goal is to translate some of the fundraising messages into Serbian, but also suggest banner messages that would appeal to readers and editors in Serbia here, as well as leave general feedback on the fundraiser and proposed messages. Thanks for your help! And please don't hesitate to contact me for anything. --Dgultekin 23:23, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Does the translation go here? 本 Mihajlo [ talk ] 23:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there is perfect :)--Dgultekin 00:35, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I can work with russian translations. Is any work right now? Lvova 04:49, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

What we want to focus on first is translating the best (messages you believe will appeal to Russian readers and contributors) banners into Russian, and also getting the Russian community involved in proposing banners for all RU sites. Thanks for your help Lvova! --Dgultekin 17:04, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Önemli değil! --Dgultekin 17:12, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I guess we need to translate "Fundraising 2010/What we've learned so far" etc. Yet, I would like to translate the title as well. Is the form "Fundraising 2010/sr/<translated title>" okay? 本 Mihajlo [ talk ] 07:00, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for invitation, I replied on my talkpage. --Kaganer 08:55, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, started translation to Ukrainian here You can contact me at User talk:Perohanych. Is there any template like {{Under translation}}? --Perohanych 09:02, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, we have {{coming soon}}. Cbrown1023 talk 22:37, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Bahar, when you have some time between your academic responsibilities it'd be great if you could check out the proposed fundraising banners and translate a few of them you think would appeal to Turkish readers and editors, if you're feeling creative suggest a few! Kolay gelsin --Dgultekin 16:38, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have a question: if I see bunners in English that may be good in Russian should I translate them and put on the ru-language page? Lvova 05:08, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely, thank you for all your work so far!--dgultekin 17:17, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Deniz, and what's next? Fundraiser begins on 8 November; how and when russian bunners will be testing?.. Lvova 10:10, 5 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Lvova, what's next is pretty big- we're will be testing geo-_targeted (Russian) banners next week. We're issuing a "Beat Jimmy" challenge where we are asking the community to submit the best banners that have been selected (in Russian or any language), which they believe has the potential to bring in more money that the Jimmy appeal banner. Help get the word out about this to the Russian community! We want to have a few banners to test submitted here by Friday.--Deniz (WMF) 20:22, 5 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Deniz! Is it true that our banners to compete here with this? Current Friday is true deadline? Or all the same we have time until next Friday? --Kaganer 16:16, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hey Kaganer, no, the banners will not be competeting with that banner! (The results could be entertaining though). We are testing community-proposed banners against this Jimmy Appeal We are only doing this particular 'beat Jimmy' test this week, so the banners do need to be in by tomorrow, but we will continue to test banners until the start of the fundraiser November 8th. We typically test on Thursdays, but will put a calendar up and let you know if/when we are running another test to get more banners submitted. -- Deniz (WMF) 16:55, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Moving fundraising banner suggestions

edit

Hi Dgultekin. When moving suggestions from Fundraising 2010/Messages/New, it would be helpful to name or link to the destination page in your edit summary. Thanks. ~ Ningauble 17:59, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'll include that information from now on, thanks for the suggestion. --dgultekin 18:03, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Any sign of Wikimania vids?

edit

Hi there. You mentioned on the social media page that you expected to see some video content from Wikimania in mid-September. Well we are just about at mid-September now. I had a look on Commons but can't find anything. Do you have any info? I am chomping at the bit to see it! You may reply here and I'll keep an eye on this page. --Bodnotbod 22:11, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'll be launching them throughout next week, they'll be on commons and a few other places. Stay tuned! --dgultekin 22:19, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's great news! Thanks for your reply. --Bodnotbod 09:56, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

banners for testing

edit

Deniz, I didn't understand you at all. Why did you delete banner that have full support and add banners that are discussed right now yet? Lvova 19:49, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lvova, I think we were editing at the same time and that's where the confusion stemmed from. I didn't delete any submissions on purpose, I apologize. We spoke today on IRC and hopefully covered all questions, I will update the testing information on the Meta site soon! - Deniz 23:20, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello again! Where can we see the results of russian bunners testing? Lvova 10:21, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Lvova, we haven't tested Russian banners yet - we will likely be testing them on the 26th. Make sure the Russian community places a star next to 5-10 banners that you want tested! --Deniz (WMF) 23:16, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Editor's letter

edit

Hi Deniz, I want to know if there are a specifical extension for the letter, and the deadline date for write them. Best, --Ivanmartinez 20:35, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

There is no strict deadline for your letter, but the sooner you get them to us the better! We are launching the Fundraiser on the 15th, but will be accepting letters until the end of December. There is also no specific format or rules for the editor appeal: we want you to tell readers why they should support Wikipedia, and why we need their help. Your letter can be in both Spanish and English :) --Deniz (WMF) 21:03, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I hope it's not too late. Here is my appeal in English and Spanish. Regards, --Ivanmartinez 20:13, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Never too late! Thanks so much for your appeal Ivan, I'm sending it to the rest of our fundraising team for feedback. One of us will be in touch as we work through the appeals. --Deniz (WMF) 20:17, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Translations to Norwegian

edit

The nb translations seem to be in pretty good shape, but I'll take a look and see if I can help proofread those Laaknor&co have made. I'm more concerned about translations into nn which seem to be lacking, it would be good if you posted another request for translators at nn:Wikipedia:Samfunnshuset I think. I'm also curious why there isn't anything at http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/DonateNonJS/nb yet, as far as I can tell all the relevant translations have been made (note that translationwiki uses no instead of nb as code for Norwegian bokmål). Best regards, Finn Rindahl 22:07, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your response Finnrind, let me know how the translation looks after you proofread! I just posted a request for translators to the Samfunnshuset, I'll find out about nb. --Deniz (WMF) 22:31, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
3 of 4 were already marked "ready", and they do look ready to me. I had a go at proofreading the FAC page (translated by Jon Harald) - I think it's good to go as well but unless your in very much of a hurry it's better to leave it open for a few days to see if others can improve the text further. There's always (in my experience) a problem with those pages in English linked from the translated text (like this one)- they don't seem to be included in the request for translation here (or maybe I didn't look in the right places). Anyway, feel free to poke me if you need help with anything - but I can't promise I will have the time to do anything... I "autopatrolled" you here at Meta btw, best regards, Finn Rindahl 23:01, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'd like to leave it open for another day or so just to see if there are any additional changes. Thanks so much for your help, I'll be in touch if I need more help :) -Deniz (WMF) 23:25, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Appeal

edit

Hey Deniz, I've created a second appeal based on a comment from Ocaasi -- could you take a look? User talk:The ed17#Personal appeal #2. Thanks, Ed (talk) 08:53, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Ed, I have your appeal, it's great. I'm sharing it with a a few members of our team to see if they have any feedback. I'll be in touch! -Deniz (WMF) 18:05, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Deniz. First off, great work on the fundraiser in general and the updates in particular. Very useful and interesting bringing people up to date.

Suggestion. The feedback link you are providing goes to Talk:Fundraising_2010/Updates but that thread is dead and nearly all discussion has happened at Talk:Fundraising_2010. Maybe it'd be better to use the latter link.

Thanks again. Ocaasi 20:00, 16 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Great suggestion, Ocassi. That thread has been a little dead, I will direct future update comments to the general talk page so more people can engage. - Deniz (WMF) 20:06, 16 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Response

edit

1) This is the first half: Talk:Fundraising_2010#Response

2) Consider 3 simple links on the donation landing page:

  • Where does the money go?

--operations breakdown

  • What are we working on?

--next decade goals

  • Why not advertising?

--well, why not

Theses links could be collapsible, with the answers on the page, or linked at a sub-page. Testing could determine which is more effective, and if they detract from conversions.

3) Regular updates were key. Better link to main stats page helpful.

4) Consider a volunteer response team who could be prepared to respond to blog/news posts, especially critical comments. This would have to be smartly done, to avoid tribe-response appearance, but could involve: Answers to common questions, Responses to common criticisms, Links to important pages (e.g. wikipedia:about, strategic planning doc, faq)

5) The lesson of this fundraiser--for me--was testing, as much as community. Decide if a massive crowdsourced slogan effort is helpful, or if it creates more noise than signal... and I really liked the slogans, but to no avail.

6) Set a big goal again, 20 million. You obviously haven't topped out yet. Only if you need the money, of course.

7) Consider novel giving approaches. A microdonation button? An option to pay .01 per page viewed? (This would require getting more readers, rather than just editors to get an account. Consider some logged-in editor perks, like personalized article recommendations, saved article bookmarks, ability to email articles.)

8) Avoid Jimmy, if possible. If we can do it without him, that much better. Consider self-reference to mitigate backlash ("me again", "make me go away", "i don't want to be here either"...)

9) Highlight new features (from the past year... vector, commons uploader, video support, wysiwyg???)

10) Consider a live feed -page with donor amounts, locations or comments, linked from the banners or landing pages, anonymized by default but not necessarily. Maybe a thin top of page feed, dismissable...

11) Great job on the multi-faceted success. Ocaasi 08:19, 3 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! The guide will be up on meta soon. Also, thanks again for all your help and voice of reason throughout the fundraiser; I've enjoyed working with you. :)- Deniz (WMF) 22:35, 4 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Wikipedia Game

edit

A discussion about improving Wikipedia's help documentation inspired an idea--tutorials would be best if they were interactive and immersive. The thought of a learning-teaching game came up, one based on a real interface with realistic 'missions'. Would you be interested in providing some feedback or helping work on it, or know some editors who might? The idea is just getting started and any assistance with the help/policy side, the experienced-editor side, or the coding/game-making side would be great. Cheers, Ocaasi 04:02, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
