Bastillle Day / Liberty Festival at Brasserie Les Halles at 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington DC on 14 July 1997 Having closed its doors in November 2008 the Les Halles Restaurant & Cafe in Washington DC not only was a long time favorite place for day time lunchers who worked in the area and weekend crowds but was, perhaps, the only place in Washington DC that celebrated Bastille Day in a big way. Along with its two other locations in NYC and Miami FL the Brasserie Les Halles in Washington DC celebrated France's BASTILLE DAY with an annual Liberty Street Festival which included a Waiter Champagne Race where participates from different restaurants competed by racing along Pennsylvania Avenue each carrying a tray filled with champagne glasses. Other events included a summer fashion show and a cigar smoking contest whereby the participants competed to see who's cigar could hold the longest ashes as was captured in this photo of a Les Halles / DC waitress dressed as Marie Antoinette during the Les Halles Brassarie Liberty Festival in Washington DC on 14 July 1997.06.12.Bastille.LesHalles.WDC.14jul97 |
