History
Biography
In his childhood, Matsuba was friends with Tsubaki's parents, and the three would often play scavenger hunt games together.
During Umeno's childhood, Matsuba personally took charge of Nazawaka City's embankment, which was falling into disrepair. He led the work and rebuilt it himself, eventually getting help from the other residents, and completed the project seven years ago.
About four years ago, Matsuba sent a letter to Tsubaki's parents with a puzzle, reminiscent of the scavenger hunts they did as children. He asked them to meet at the paper manufacturing workshop in three days time; however, when the day came, Tsubaki came down with a fever, and his parents were unable to go. That night, the workshop mysteriously burned down, and Matsuba died inside.[1]
Notably, Umeno Nazawa believes the burning of the workshop to be Taketo Nazawa's doing.
Legacy
After Matsuba's passing, his son Taketo took over as village headman. Due to Taketo's reputed brilliance, however, chaos during the transition was minimized.
Trivia
- The matsu (マツ?) in Matsuba's name means "pine". When paired with Taketo ("bamboo") and Umeno ("plum"), they form the shōchikubai (Pine-Bamboo-Plum), three symbols of the Japanese New Year.
- In the shōchikubai, pine represents strength.
- Coincidentally, shōchikubai sounds similar to shichibukai, the Japanese term for the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Matsuba was a big fan of Dracule Mihawk, a member of the organization.
