...Gai.

"Demon Brawler" Gai[7] is a former and former and first of the Slaughter Pirates[1], known for his work in the , and the hybrid product of supposedly a human and a lobster fish-man. The truth of his true origins had been kept a secret from Gai by both his mother and unloving grandfather, who only allowed to keep Gai alive if it meant that his mother was willing to be married to another World Noble, the son of her father's friend. Following through to keep her son safe, Gai had spent the next eighteen years of his life hidden away before being kicked out, allowed to explore the rest of the world as whatever he wished, just not as a World Noble.

Quickly taking up piracy and finding work in the shortly after, Gai found his way into the Slave Trade where he would be recognised under the alias Avsati (エーブサティ eebusati)[2][3]. In a matter of years, Gai shined amongst his rivals, working with a crew to capture and hold numerous slaves, and building a reputation for being ruthless in his job, even going as far as to capture his business rivals and sell them off as slaves to weaken the competition. Besides money and reputation, Gai continued working with the slave trade as a chance to find his mother, who he had not seen since birth. Because of this, Gai commonly worked with World Nobles every chance he got in hopes of it being her.

After an incident that led his crew to their lowest point, Gai built the crew back up into the current Slaughter Pirates, a crew composed of a force of men and monster. His exploits and raids earned him a place as one of the Signs of Calamity, and his place as a Super Rookie of his generation; a reputation he built on a murderous rampage through Paradise to feed his crew. It had also led to the forming of the Megâlo Entente, an alliance between the Slaughter Pirates, the Mirror Pirates and the Redwing Pirates. However, his attack on the port town of Kikoto in Ismeretlen, would be the dawn of a serious of events that lead to the young captain's downfall.

At some point in 1854, Gai was captured by the World Government and enlisted in the Expendables.

Appearance

Pre-Timeskip

Gai's general appearance is that of a tall young man with dark toned skin and dark-greyish hair, with two braids formed going from the front of his hair to the back on both sides. This leaves the top slicked back along with the braids, and the sides of his head messy[8]. He stands at a height of 6 foot and 6 inches, making him taller than most people he encounters which mostly leaves him in a posture that has him looking down whenever he talks. His dark red eyes are both mesmerising and threatening, able to get the message he wants across with a single glance, though upon closer inspection, one may see that Gai's left eye is blind[9]. Gai commonly assumes a more regal posture, back straight up with his head held high, not out of confidence but rather the lifestyle he had been raised in, one that a World Noble would take to remind others of their place. His cold expressionless face only shows emotion very rarely, though much more when he is accompanied by the ones closest to him[10], making it a sight that can become unfamiliar and surprising to many.

After his fight with Stinson Barney, Gai had suffered a notably large wound underneath his left eye.[11] This scar seems to be one of the best ways of identifying Gai due to its size and almost jagged shape. It is one of the main reasons that Gai wears the mask that he has, acting as a second face for his reputation and to hide the 'ugly' battle scars after the desperate raid to feed his crew.[12] Gai views the scar as special, signifying the start of changes to the Slaughter Pirates', and a reminder for him to keep growing.[13] The mask that he wears to accompany and hide the scar is a large, dark coloured, skull mask with a jaw that extends further down than Gai's own. Both its empty eye sockets and its nose are connected by large gaps carved into the skull's face, making it look quite alien and disturbing. Its large smile can also be unnerving for others that see him, looking all the more disturbing. Black lenses cover the inside of the nose and the eye sockets, acting like protection from both physical damage and identification.[12]

Personality

Gai has come from being a careful and wary child during his days in Mary Geoise, to becoming a ruthless and cold individual who sees weaker humans as livestock for his crew. From his time as the captain of the Grey Coat Pirates, Gai carries over his disciplined and careful way of approach to life, making sure not to underestimate those who cross his path but lacking the tolerance for those that bare a confidence that outshines their true strength during battle. Gai held great respect and care for his crew, who in return showed the same, with the aim of making the Grey Coat Pirates a family that he could always rely on, conveying a sort of humanity could be seen from behind his lifeless mask of a face. This same care had caused Gai to remain with his crew once they became stranded and ultimately sacrifice his first mate once they had run out of food, refusing to eat as well because of what he had done. Accidentally submitting his men to the effect of the Musha Musha no Mi his first mate had eaten, Gai suffers from immense guilt that constantly weighs down on him whenever he looks at his original crew, and even holding weekly raids on islands to feed them in order to carry the burden he created.

The fish... They didn't return... As if the universe was punishing us for what we had done. But I had to feed my men, they looked onto me as their captain for guidance. So I gave in, and offered the corpse of my first mate as a chance for survival. Me? I waited for the fish to come back, but by the time they did, my crew had already developed a prominent taste for flesh that fish was no longer any interest to them... I've become a captain of the damned, doomed to keep these rabid dogs on a leash. But hey, it's got its benefits I guess....

Despite this, Gai is not afraid to take advantage over the new found abilities as well as the strange loyalty that the so called 'Damned' provide for him, using them as a sort of bodyguard force, and tampering with the flesh of his first mate in order to create another generation of Damned that would retain more of their humanity with nearly as much power. As the captain of the Slaughter Pirates, the isolation and constant reminder as a failure of being a captain has seemed to change Gai to an even more cold being, lacking much emotion when with others and only showing it to those that he truly trusts. Although he may hold a good reputation and relationship with his crew, he holds a much higher expectation to them, especially when they are more than fully capable to do so. He can act quite brash, as he is quick to punish the whole crew when one is not able to accept their responsibly. After knocking down one of the Hollow who had failed to do their job, Gai was quick to shove a pistol in their face and fire, fully knowing that they were invulnerable to gunfire, in an effort to warn the other crew members and scare the Hollow in question. Although, realising that the Hollow was still scared of the gun disappointed Gai, who had expected them to be fearless with their powers against such weapons. Because of their overall loyalty to Gai, however, he does not keep many Hollow in his circle of trust, with the only one so far being Arietta Melody. He values differing opinions and free minds so much that he keeps the position of First-Mate to only that of the Vilons, crew members who had established a show of strength comparable to the Damned, or members that have a significant role in the operation of the crew, explaining Gai's pick for Olsen Alfhild.

Due to the activities that the Slaughter Pirates do, Gai expects all of his crew to be fully capable of fighting without being held back by the thought of killing. People who have fought back and survived the raids conducted by the crew usually earn Gai's respect for not retreating, and hold a greater respect for those that fight for what they truly believe, whether it is good or bad. These types of people become ideal people that Gai would rather ally with or induct into his crew, but prefers of giving the freedom of choosing to them if he asks, detesting the forceful ways some pirates act when they discover an individual they may find fitting for their crew. Like many others in the world, Gai seeks to accomplish two things that he believes would make his life mean something: finding his mother and earning a reputation so terrifying that his name's legacy would be considered unlucky to even say it when referring about him. His mother especially is one of the biggest fuels to his career as a pirate and a smuggler, as well as his journey to New World where he believes his mother resides.

The captain has shown a keen interest of anything game-like, from simple board games like battle-ship, to games of chance, of cards and dice like poker or liar's dice. A child-like excitement seems to fill him whenever he has the chance to play and will agree to play for the sake of playing. The thought of risk has always been something that has motivated and fueled Gai's train of thought, both in games and in his personal life, though in games, Gai seems to risk himself a lot more than in something like actual combat.

Gai's perspective on killing does sway depending on the circumstance, believing that the only justice that he could give to taking a life is to feed the Damned and Hollow of his crew. He looks down on groups killing to establish dominance or to just kill outright, a look that even he is sometimes associated with due to rumours and reputation. The justification of feeding bodies to the Damned can be used to twist his own motives, however, especially when seeking to kill _targets that he has his own issues with. Revenge has heavily and continues to impact Gai's life and actions, despite knowing what it has done to him and the people around him. Revenge had scarred Gai's body and changed his crew, leaving physical repercussions that Gai seems to forget when overwhelmed with the negative feeling. He has shown to do this when individuals have threatened or harmed his crew mates, such as the sailors that he hunted down in 1577 and Alfhild's defeat by Stinson Barney, or when an individual has wronged him severely, such as Saint Dolphus revealing his real name in an Underworld market.

Imagine. You nearly killed off your entire crew, ONCE AGAIN! What a captain you are, leading your men right into danger.Gai to himself.

After a series of events that had threatened and severely harmed members of his crew, Gai's guilt had gotten worse by the year 1578. The damage sustained by Alfhild from Shirimasen, the massacre caused by Phoebe at Obscuria and the battle that ensued at Es-Nezinu for the Wildest Hunt, caused Gai to become quite protective by the time of the events of The Island of Dr. Kazuko arc. So protective in fact, that he had only chosen to bring Arietta Melody and Okada Yomotsu with him as the visiting party for Robben Island. His paranoia also followed with the orders to have every cannon on the Wildest Hunt pointed towards the island, and to start shooting once something looked amiss. Once the captains had been drugged and placed into a race to free their crew members, Gai was one of the more determined ones to reach the end, visibly angered by what Kazuko had broadcasted to him and immediately invited all of Kazuko's forces to stop him.

Relationships

Family

Grandfather

Mother

Alfhild: "And what makes you think your mom's in New World? What if she isn't? What if she was in Paradise this whole time, and you've just placed thousands of miles between you and her?"

Gai: "That's way too much worrying for my liking. To be honest, I think I'll just assume she's there and hope that I'm right."Gai to Olsen Alfhild, talking about his mother.[14]

His mother's absence has been one of the major motivations to Gai's ascent to piracy, with his need to find his mother bringing him from the high tops of Mary Geoise, to the underground markets of the Underworld. It can be assumed that Gai and his mother cared for each other deeply, due to his mother offering to marry off to a noble in exchange of giving Gai a home to live in Mary Geoise with his World Noble grandfather. Having believed that his mother had been married off to another World Noble, Gai started his work in the Underworld as a smuggler, selling slaves off to high class figures in hopes of gaining information on where his mother may be, as well as hopefully coming across her one day.

Father

With his father, who seemed to be the only parent that was present in his life, Gai was made to be a disciplined and readied student, who would continuously train in his young age in order to get a good grasp of the Fish-Man Karate that this side of the family had come to master for many generations. Due to the many physical and emotional punishments done to him by his father in order to keep him straight with his lessons, Gai slowly came to accept that it was how things should have been taught, and mindlessly continued in order to appease his teacher. Only once did he finally become proficient in the teachings of his father, did Gai manage to earn his respect, though by the time it happened, Gai had already become quite fearful of his father. Fear quickly turned into hate and discontent, which Gai used as motivation to further learn Fish-Man Karate and Jujutsu later on. His desire to become more powerful than his father seems to be one of the driving forces for his continuous use of the art, to hope that one day, he could finally show how much stronger he was compared to his old man.

Crew

Olsen Alfhild

As the first-mate of the Slaughter Pirates, Alfhild is one of the few people within the crew that Gai is able to really trust. They are also one of the few people that Gai is able to express a more human side to his cold, intimidating figure, having seen and understood a captain that really looks out for his crew and his crew alone. Gai and Alfhild's first meetings had ended up with Alfhild being sold off as a slave and Gai with money to waste, eventually forcing her to even further her skill as a swordswoman and fight her way out to receive her freedom. Despite many other crew members respecting and even fearing Gai for the monster he had shown himself to be, Alfhild seems to hold the courage and familiarity with Gai to change course of his ship, even against his first wishes.[15] With reason, Gai was able to listen and allow it with little restrain, showing a more brutish and tougher side to his crew mates only seconds after.

After directing the ship to raid a nearby island known as Shirimasen, which both Gai and Alfhild knew were stationed by marines, Alfhild would soon find herself captured and defeated by the Marine captain Stinson Barney.[16] After assuming that Alfhild had perished from a large scale attack that the marine landed on her, Gai attacked Barney with more determination and ferocity than he usually showed, displaying a sense of anger that broke through the expressionless persona of the captain through the more hard hitting techniques he would use against him.[17] At that point, Gai was willing to hurt himself in the process, eventually lifting a glass shard-covered spheric projectile with his bare hands, and sustaining a large wound underneath his eye that would eventually become his most notable scar.[17]

Sometime after the events of the raid Gai personally apologised and thanked Alfhild for her work and her initiative.[18]

After being separated from each other during the Gates of Hell arc, Gai leads his crew from the Wild Hunt back towards the Devil's Cellar to try and retrieve Alfhild, ultimately coming across the hiding place of Saint Dolphus and Phoebe. After the massacre that had happened and their retreat back to ship, Gai set off out by himself to try and find the first-mate and the doctor. During his contemplation, he calls Alfhild one of the closest things he has as a friend.

Tine Rena

In this part of the ship, captain, I outrank you. Please don't forget that.Rena reminds Gai after his battle with Stinson Barney.[19]

Gai's relationship with his ship's doctor, Tine Rena, is also one where great respect is held for the other on either side. Another person within Gai's small circle of trust, Rena is one of the first people to see the smile that Gai had rarely shown after his reemergence in the pirate world. Despite her innocent and friendly behaviour, contrasting the cold and brutish look that Gai sports, the two are extremely close to where even Gai at times can fear her. Gai has even been struck down by Rena before, though has usually not responded because of their relationship, and knowing that it would have been because of him that she would act in such manner.[20]

Urashima Taro

Gai and Taro's first meeting wasn't anything that could be considered, 'normal', as Taro had first met the captain after fishing him out of the water with his fishing rod in Minisle. [20]

Melody Arietta

The longest serving member of the Slaughter Pirates, having been under Gai's leadership since the days of the Grey Coat Pirates, Arrieta has been in Gai's circle of trust since the stranding of the crew. Both Gai and Arietta were the only ones of the Grey Coat Pirates to retain their sanity during the whole ordeal, both knowing and respecting what the other had to endure during those harsh times. To Gai, however, Arietta serves not only as a close accomplice to the captain, but one of his stronger weapons due to the circumstances of the current standing of the crew. As a Hollow, Arietta has the ability to boost the other Damned and Hollow with the use of her Devil Fruit, which can be transmitted through the hive mind that all Damned and Hollow of the Slaughter Pirates share. Gai has come to know Arietta as the true keeper of the Damned with what control she can have over them, though keeps the title knowing that the Hollow and the Damned still retain loyalty to him.

He knows Arietta's drinking habits and tries keep her sober when going on shore for non-raid visits, or meeting other pirates, using medicine that Rena makes for that reason alone. [21]

Okada Yomotsu

Despite having been with the crew for a short period of time, Yomotsu was able to quickly earn the respect of Gai, who saw Yomotsu as an accomplished blacksmith and shipwright. This kind of respect allowed Gai to make the decision of bringing Yomotsu to Robben Island, accompanying Gai and Melody to see the festivities that were going on.

World Government

Gai bares no ill will against World Nobles nor the World Government, only lashing out at them if it means that they can feed his crew or have attacked him due to a duty of arresting pirates. His grandfather's reluctance to keep him when he was a child, but honourable enough to fulfil his promise to his mother, allowed Gai to find respect for his elder, seeing as he was able to set his pride aside and allow a half-blood to live under his roof until he came of age. Because of him, Gai has several connections to many World Nobles from his childhood, some of which have become tolerant of his pirate ways despite their pride. Gai has been able to work with World Nobles early in his career, usually capturing and selling slaves to those of higher status blood, in return for large amounts of gold.

His interactions with World Nobles has been mixed over time, having helped Inryō Riku become the head of his family by killing his father, but also having an intense grudge against Saint Dolphus for revealing his name and harming his crew.

With the marines, however, Gai holds several grudges against multiple people within the military that have certainly built up over time.

Bell Q. Dan

"...There's a young man that I had met not too long ago. Pirate captain of a small crew from what I've learned. I guess he fought for the right things. First time I met him, he was interrupting a slave auction in Obscuria for this one slave girl a couple of audience members were bidding for. Don't know whether it was out of love or out of pity, but one thing was for certain, he knew an innocent like that didn't belong in chains.Gai uses Dan as an example of a 'good' pirate.[23]

The first time that Gai and Dan met, Gai had not made the best first impression on him, appearing as Underworld as he could be during a slave auction in Obscuria. Caught in the middle of a bidding battle with another audience member, Gai threatened to shoot at and kill Mei-bun as a way to prove his point. At the same time, Gai had no idea to why Dan would have fought for the slave in the first place, whom he needed to read a poneglyph that came with her as well as serve as food for the Damned and Hollow after she had fulfilled her purpose.

They did have a shared goal and feeling of revenge and hate for Saint Dolphus, both coming in at the same time after their confrontations with the Henry Benjamin and the PB-Androids respectively. Though they had come in their own style: with Gai backed up by majority of his crew members and Dan coming in alone from the sky.

Abilities and Powers

As a former Pirate Captain, and someone that has found his worth through his capabilities in combat, Gai has proven from time to time that he holds significant power that he has developed in order to control and warn his foes. Whether it be with his skill with weapons or his use of Fishman Karate and Jujutsu, Gai is able to adapt and deal with certain situations that come into his path. His former title as both Captain of the Slaughter Pirates and the Keeper of the Damned (のろわれたの番人 Norowa reta no ban'nin, Cursed guardian) didn't come without reason, as he held the strange ability to control and command the crew members that had eaten the flesh of a Musha Musha no Mi, which usually renders those into flesh eating creatures who turn extremely animalistic to feed.[24] From the many raids he went out on to gather human meat for those in his crew who could only eat it, Gai continued to further sharpen his skills, building and regaining the power that he had lost during isolation. As disciplined as he could be, Gai had found himself being a loose cannon when overwhelmed with emotion, when it came to defending or avenging fallen friends, or finding an opponent he finds enjoyment in fighting, often acting recklessly that often gets himself injured in the process.

By the time Gai was captured by the marines and forced into servitude under the Expendables, Gai has become much wiser, having learned many things before and after his capture. By this time he has opened up more about his ability to hear The Voice of all Things, even able to apparently hear the sea itself, aside from the Sea Kings that he fought against some time before his capture. Everything from the teachings of former allies and biological changes to his body, both man-made and natural, have culminated and mixed to create the now far-from-man that Gai has become.

Physical Abilites

As a Fish-man/Human hybrid, Gai is already immensely strong and shows excellent performance when placed underwater. Above water, Gai is still quite a formidable opponent, showing a level of strength that exceeds that of the normal human. Even at a young age, Gai was described for being incredibly strong despite his near slim appearance, managing to push back his grandfather's vehicle even as it was pushing against him. As an adult, Gai shows an increased strength as he is able to lift cannon balls with extreme ease, even going as to throw them with the same firing power as a cannon. The damage that Gai can do with his strength on the other hand can become quite problematic, although has certainly changed since his adolescence. His temper tantrums when he was young had usually resulted in massive destruction of the area he was in, usually costing his family a lot to replace afterwards. Even when handcuffed, did Gai show enough strength to simply break them apart and rip off the cuffs themselves from his wrists.

He has lifted vehicles above his head at times and can hold back extremely large strikes with his body, showing enough resilience to push against some very strong attacks. By now as an adult, Gai has become increasingly more careful albeit with some inevitable damage as a result of his increased strength. The strikes that he may deliver onto opponents may cause standard fighters to fly backwards metres away from their original position. He can inflict serious injuries within close combat and can rival the strengths of various pirates and marines. His strength is as such greater within his arms, however, his legs aren't anymore less of a threat, having enough power to knock down some opponents with a few blows. Gai has also gained high pain tolerance, durability and agility because of his genes, something that he's trained and furthered himself in order to continue and lengthen the time of the battle he is in.

GaiA04
Gai discovering his Fish-Man abilities at a young age,

Whilst he may not openly show that many traits belonging to his father, Gai has inherited various abilities due to his father's species of fish-men. Gai naturally has an extended lifespan like many members from his father's side, which may span to an average of a hundred years or even more. At the same time, Gai has inherited a minor ability to regenerate things such as fingers, toes or other small body parts. It is unknown and described as possibly unlikely to regenerating bigger limbs like his arms and his legs like his father does, as he wonders if human genes may have an effect on this feature. The regenerative process may take up to a series of weeks and/or months, but is guaranteed to have the bit come back. It is likened to growing hair in Gai's case and if cut all the way may cause the process to stretch out even longer.

Gai also shares a special ability that runs within his father's lineage that happens every few generations, last happening to his grandfather; whilst spikes may appear on their lobster like shells, Gai can retract and extend from his body black spikes that can grow no bigger than twelve inches. This special gene may have been boosted due to a lack of claws and so a special defence mechanism that Gai's fish-men genes had inherited in order to compensate. These spikes give Gai an increased effectiveness to his close combat, and when shown to have consumed lobster shells may extend in length for a set length of time. Gai does seem to use it in more extreme cases as the only thing that may hold him back from using it most of the time is how it rips through the clothing he wears. Gai may choose where the spikes can emerge, arming his fists more than his whole body. With the experiments done to him during his time during The Island of Dr. Kazuko, Gai was able to grow chitin like armour that he can grow naturally on his skin as hard armour. He can quickly grow and enhance this same kind of armour through the use of Seimei Kikai to create a full suit of armour to protect himself with as well as change his entire appearance to that of a bestial crustacean.

When placed underwater, Gai's lineage as a Fish-man properly shine as many qualities of his become enhanced, allowing the water to be his biggest advantage during a fight. Within this environment, Gai's body enters a temporary change whilst he is in water; a tremendous increase in strength, the ability to effortlessly move through the water as if floating, and increased speed and sensory[25]. The downside, however, is that his eye-sight becomes slightly worse when underwater, relying on his enhanced senses to help him through a fight. His hair acts as sensors to carefully examine his surroundings, used to feel the waters around. Whilst he may be able to see figures, this can be quite dangerous as he finds it difficult to distinguish between friend or foe, ultimately attacking both as if the latter. Gai also has the ability to breathe underwater, still holding the capability to speak perfectly normal as if on dry land through gills in an unknown region on his body. When Gai is swimming, he doesn't need a constant movement of the legs, and has great control over where his body moves all with simple leaning to the side and kicking. When needed, Gai can even use his increased strength to propel himself through the water with grand force that can cause surrounding entities to be forced outward, becoming a move that Gai uses consistently during underwater combat. When attacking other ships, Gai can usually be the first strike against the opposing crew, often using his abilities to strike the ships from the underside, showing little problem in breaking and ripping apart a ship's hull.

While believing and looking human, Gai has exemplified many abilities that would be highly improbable for him to accomplish if he was, such as swimming at extremely high speeds and inheriting even more of his Fish-Man genes than a usual Fish-Man/Human Hybrid would. It is implied that there is something about his past and family that he has yet to discover.

Techniques

  • Torpedo Strike (): When underwater, Gai prepares to propel forward at an incredible speed using his whole body as a projectile. Whilst the charge up is very subtle, the attack is very versatile depending on what Gai wants. Gai commonly uses this attack to damage the underside of ships, which is how he is also able to enter them[26]. The force of Torpedo Strike is enough to knock over a battleship, yet for this level of power needs a great distance between Gai's starting position and the _target. A lot of Torpedo's strike's power comes from the velocity and force produced, meaning that the further Gai was from his intended _target, the more powerful the hit. Gai also uses Torpedo Strike to shoot out from the water and high into the air, being able to reach heights of flying aircrafts over head. Because of his enhanced abilities underwater, Torpedo Strike is more commonly kept underwater in order to provide maximum effect.
    • Sea Urchin Torpedo Strike (): The same method as Torpedo Strike except Gai extends spikes of any length from around his body, curling up into a ball before being launched into the _target. This attack, while still establishing the same powerful force as its base technique, adds the piercing damage of the spikes and even a latching sort of method onto the hull of ships if done gently enough.

Fighting Styles

In combat, Gai has shown adequate skill to quickly take down his opponents with supernatural speed and strength, barely needing the use of weapons besides a dagger that he keeps on his person. His elegant movements and quick agility make Gai look like a rushing shadow as he bounces from spot to spot, easily disarming or incapacitating weaker _targets before moving onto the next. When confronted with a force easily outnumbering him, Gai is quick to analyse and understand the situation in order to proceed with the proper method. He disarms and uses his opponents' weapons against themselves, even going as far as to throw his enemies at each other if it meant that he could have some more time to deal with another part of the battle. His aim with flintlocks and rifles is backed up with experience, shooting opponents in areas that can throw their guard or aim off, or in areas that will put them down quickly with no after-reaction.

At the same time, his skill with a blade is careful and precise, striking ever so quickly to take advantage of openings in his opponent's guard and in a way that allows him to become equal against those with much larger blades, able to continuously clash blades in a defensive manner if need be. All his time during piracy and the later stages of his early life in Mary Geiose had been spent to make him the monster he is, adapting to the situation and knowing when to back out if something is more than he can handle. His combat proficiency has been a large benefit to his career in the slave trade, as it allowed him to disable and capture _targets, especially when some of them were high levelled _targets. Gai prefers his fights to be quick and easy, becoming annoyed at the thought of having wasted time when one of his opponents prove they are more than he thought them to be[27].

His use of a weapon does not match with the level of his unarmed fighting, but rather uses weapons like Sirena, a bident, to compliment his fighting style. He uses weapons to extend and/or empower his moveset, either adding extra force to his strikes or extending his reach. With Sirena, Gai can use the bident to fire a wave of Uchimizu shots in one quick succession, exerting the same force as he would with his fist into the weapon in order to make it just as if not even more deadlier. He can also apply the same rules of Fish-man Karate strikes to his own strikes with Sirena, being able to release shockwaves with the bident that can be more powerful than by his fist alone, making his weapons all the more dangerous, as well as adding further reach to his attacks. This kind of fighting becomes even more valuable against heavily armoured or durable opponents, who may be able to brush off the piercing strikes of Sirena, but not the force that Gai can exert through it.

Fish-Man Karate

Main article: Fish-Man Karate

Gai credits his innate talent for Fish-Man Karate to his father, who is an accomplished user of the fighting style and the one that taught Gai in secret when he was a child, all the way up to his departure from Mary Geoise. His training through Fish-Man Karate had seemed taken the most effect on Gai through the way he behaves, making the once brash and confident boy into a disciplined and careful man. Through his father's teachings, Gai had become an adept practitioner of the art, literally beaten into him by his father in order to carry on his family's skill and talent. Despite his masterful proficiency with Fish-Man Karate, Gai's pride as a fish-man, and obligation to become better than his father has motivated his continuous practice of the art, finding it as one of the most useful tools against his opponents when combined with his natural immense fish-man strength.

Due to the nature of Fish-Man Jujutsu, Gai can be severely limited to his Fish-Man Karate whilst on land, where despite being quite adept, still finds himself at a disadvantage compared to most opponents. But compared to his Jujutsu, Gai's Karate can only so compare to the strength that he gains when underwater, especially when his Fish-Man abilities sync with his mastery over water. He has shown to be able to move the water and through the water quite effortlessly, creating multiple currents from all sorts of directions to push into _targets or to trap them in place, with enough force to keep them under pressure. He had shown this during his battle against Henry Benjamin through the use of 'Mizu seru'.[28] When mixed with his strength, Gai can quickly hurl large projectiles from the water without too much strain, firing torpedoes that can be ten times his size. Though, some Fish-Man karate moves also become much more effective when done within or near large bodies of water, such as 'Mizu no Ryūsei' or 'Uchimizu', which increase the size, amount and/or power of projectiles that are shot. Gai's use of Fish-Man Karate has more so been to compensate the level of strength between him and his opponent, using its force and shockwaves to penetrate his opponent's defences in order to land hits. It is also used as a way to counter the hits of opponents head on, such as him using 'Hyakumaigawara Seiken' to counter Bell Q. Dan's 'L-Manos'.[29] Even large projectiles like a shot fired by a cannon produced by Stinson Barney's devil fruit, which Gai countered by countering the force with the use of 'Kaizoku no Komori-uta', stopping the large cannonball and grabbing it to throw back at the marine captain, [30] Because of this, Gai becomes a major threat to pirates travelling over the ocean, and making naval battles challenging, especially for those powered by Devil Fruits.

While his Fish-Man Karate was taught by his father, Gai took it upon himself to learn Fish-Man Jujutsu, an art that he finds especially more powerful with the way that he taught himself by. While there had been some moves that he had learned after being removed from Mary Geoise, Gai's overall usage of Fish-Man Jujutsu has been more of moves that he had developed himself, oblivious to other moves that may have been created similarly before. This art seems to also be the easiest for Gai to use, holding a natural affinity to manipulating the waters around him to do as he wills. With the abilities of his Fish-Man genes within the water combined with Fish-Man Jujutsu, Gai quickly makes himself out to be a threat out at sea, where once brought under the waves, is where he can truly shine.

His use of Fish-Man Jujutsu would make way for his advanced style: Yutate-Kagura (湯立神楽, Yutate kagura), a form of Fish-Man Jujutsu that focuses on rapidly moving water in order to bring it to its boiling point to use for combat. Having developed his control over Jujutsu, Gai is able to reflexively heat up water quickly before flinging it into his opponents in a way that doesn't risk harming himself by heating the entire water area around him. This style of fighting is all the more effective for underwater combat, especially against sea creatures and other Fish-men. In nature, Yutate-Kagura is Fish-Man Jujutsu that utilises heat for combat, and can leave devastating injuries to its _targets if they are hit, whilst the user also retains control over the waters around them. One of the things to Yutate-Kagura is the way that the practitioner can learn it, which Gai deems dangerous due to the high risk of the practitioner being able to kill themselves in the process. This style of fighting does become significantly more ineffective against users with freezing type Devil Fruits/powers in general or within environments with an extremely cold climate, making this style of fighting advantageous in some circumstances. The use of a trident also exists within this style of fighting, though very minimally if Gai wants to increase his reach or to deliver fast striking attacks, which even then, can be matched or exceeded by his own hand movements.

Fish-Man Karate Techniques
  • Uchimizu (撃水 Uchimizu, literally meaning "Water Shot"): Gai throws a water droplet towards his _target that quickly turns into a bullet, travelling at the same speed with an increased force that comes from the strength used by Gai. For convenience, Gai often uses his spittle to create smaller bullets that have the same impact[31], but only opts to this when he doesn't have any suitable water sources at the time. He has shown numerous times that he is able to do this multiple times at the same time, either by soaking his fingers in liquid or waving his arm with enough force to create more water bullets from the thrown droplets[32]. With this method, Gai can take on larger groups of enemies at a time, as well as overwhelm singular opponents with a wall of bulletfire.
  • Gekirō Sutā (激浪スター, Gekirō sutā, English for Riptide Star): Placing his hand fully in a suitable water source, Gai pulls out a shuriken shaped water projectile that can be hurled towards his opponent, in the same sort of style as Uchimizu. Unlike Uchimizu, Gekirō Sutā constantly grows the longer it travels, making it much more suitable for long range attacks as its immense size can be used to bring down ships if far enough. With the Fish-man's immense strength, Gekirō Sutā can be used to tear through obstacles that stand in its way, and may only be stopped once it is disrupted by a powerful force or collided with a material that is too strong for it to burst through. Gekirō Sutā contains cutting power and force that reflects the size in which it is built up to, and can be created with two hands if the water source is large enough[33], as Gekirō Sutā can only be made as large as the water source it is collected from.
    • Mizu no Ryūsei (水の流星, Mizu no Ryūsei, English for Water Meteor): An advanced version of Gekirō Sutā that is used over a body of water in a straight line, Mizu no Ryūsei starts of as its normal form before being thrown forward with enough strength to make its spin much quicker. The power to Mizu no Ryūsei comes from the combination of both collecting water to increase its size from the air and the water below it, building enough force to pick up the water into its body and quickly build its power in quadruple the time a Gekirō Sutā could. Like Gekirō Sutā, the longer it is thrown at, the more it builds up, and can reach the size of normal ships in a short amount of distance. Gai had to find himself in water before he could use such a technique, using the water from the beach as the accompanying source for Mizu no Ryūsei to build its power.[34]
  • Kalamidad (): Clapping his hands together, Gai creates an incredibly powerful shockwave around him, travelling through the water vapours in the air to affect everything around him, whilst covering an extremely large distance as a result. It is enough to continuously push back rough waves around him, as the shockwave continues to ripple for miles outward, with the area around Gai being the most deadliest. Gai has shown a weakened version of this technique, used on his own crew as a warning. Even while weakened, it managed to knock down both humans and Hollow alike, with the shockwave being still enough to make getting up extremely hard for them. The only one who had managed to not completely fall down was Olsen Alfhild, though she was still blown back enough to fall on her knees.[35]
    • Sakuna (): A version of Kalamidad to be used more so on a single _target, Gai centers the attack on the _target's body, making them the meeting point that his hands clash with, except instead of palms meeting, they usually end up slamming into the sides of the victim. First used by Gai on Benjamin during the events of Sea and Storm, Sakuna erupts a shockwave within a singular entity's body to cause immense damage within, using the water inside the person's body to create a contained explosion of force.[36] An interrupted Sakuna reverts the technique to a mix of both, as the victim remains in the epicenter of the attack while a lot of the shockwave is blasted outwards around the user, affecting the area around them.
  • Senmaigawara Seiken (千枚瓦正拳 Senmaigawara Seiken?, literally meaning "Thousand Tile True Punch"): Gai was first seen using this technique against an incoming cannonball created by Stinson Barney, using the force of the strike to collide with the projectile's own momentum and cancel each other out.[37] Senmaigawara Seiken is a technique that is used by Fish-Man Karate users as a display for the fighting style's power, supposedly being able to kill a human in one go.
  • Robusutātairu ma ken (ロブスタータイル真拳 Robusutātairu ma ken, meaning "Lobster Tile True Fist"): Gai punches the space in front of him with a fair distance between him and his _target/s, sending a considerable amount of force through the air and into his opponents. This creates a shockwave that lifts enemies off their feet, and can send their opponents flying through the air, quite like Fish-Man Karate move 'Karakusagawara Seiken'. This, however, is different as its area of effect is sent out in a cone shape in front of Gai with a wider area of effect, being more concentrated in one direction rather than having a looser but wider reach. Just like the aforementioned move, Robusutātairu ma ken also has a delayed effect.[38]
  • Hyakumaigawara Seiken (百枚瓦正拳 Hyakumaigawara Seiken?, literally meaning "Hundred Tile True Punch"): A powerful punch with enough force to lift a _target off their feet and send them flying backwards. Gai first displayed this attack against Bell Q. Dan, countering the force and stopping his attack.[39]
  • Gaibu Setsuzoku Shisei (外部接続姿勢 Gaibu setsuzoku shisei, English for External Connection Posture): By entering this stance, Gai is able to concentrate more focus and energy into his attacks, and give him the boost needed for certain Fish-Man Karate moves that he may not be fully prepared for or able to cope with the after effects. Gaibu Setsuzoku Shisei also strengthen's Gai's body to a degree, though making him a bit tougher to bring down, the stance focuses on empowering Gai's moveset and shifting his limits higher to access more incredibly advanced techniques. This stance is more so unique to Gai's family, having been taught to him by his father as a way to experience and learn the adept techniques before ever reaching their specified level. A key thing about Gaibu Setsuzoku Shisei is that when the user enters the stance, they cannot move from their position until they have learned to focus and control the energy they may emit, as the results of moving around with Gaibu Setsuzoku Shisei can be very destructive, as even a step can unintentionally create a powerful shockwave. However, Gai has used this downside as its own power, moving around to create small shockwaves whenever he tends to fight opponents one on one, or him against a group.
Firsh-Man Jujutsu Techniques
  • Mizugokoro (水心 Mizugokoro, literally meaning "Water Heart"):
  • Shredding Ocean Pillar (海の柱を細断, Umi no hashira o Hoso dan): Gai summons a ring of water that spins vertically around him with himself in the centre, circling him at a speed that causes his clothing and hair to flail about like as if hit with harsh winds. Shifting his upper body sidewards and pulling one arm back, Gai can redirect the direction of his attack before ultimately throwing his back arm forward and sending a swirling current with razor white peaks from the water ring around him, closing the ring into a pillar inches away from his position so that it can engulf everything that stood in its path. The technique seems strong enough to completely shred a large man of muscular structure, as the attack had left nothing but shreds of cloth and the dagger that Gai had stabbed into him prior of using Fish-Man Jujutsu.[40]
  • Jūsui-dan (重水弾 Jūsui-dan): Gai throws his arms forward before him to fire a large torpedo of water, that can reach ten times his size...
  • Mizu seru (水セル Mizu Seru, English for Water Cell):
    • Futtō seru (沸騰セル Futtō seru, English for Boiling Cell):

Navigation

Gai is an accomplished navigator, having developed it since his days during his work in the Underworld, and having used it to find the slaves he needed to sell to World Nobles. He was able to find Ferrigno Agostino's hideout to deliver a slave, leading Bendis to the secret location and re-uniting the trio.

Seimei Kikan

Gai first learned Seimei Kikan from Gonbei after meeting eachother, the two learning from the other in their own respective art. Gai's primary usage for Seimei Kikan is for adaption and enhancing his form, whether it be his physical form or the techniques of his Fish-man Karate. However, Gai has been able to use Seimei Kikan as a means to force the effects of the serum that he acquired during his time in Robben Island.

Seimei Kikan Techniques

  • Hyaku Seicho (百日猗; lit. "Hundred Day Growth"): Being the very first thing taught to him by Gonbei, Gai uses this Seimei Kikan technique to grow at a rapid speed till they reach a state of having been trained for a hundred days. At first, Gai was able to only grow one arm as a result, but by the time of his second battle with Henry Benjamin, he was able to massively grow both arms, or grow his entire body to an extent. This not only enhances his physical strength, boosting the already superhuman strength that Fish-men possess, but seems to also affect the overall strength and control that his shockwaves can be exerted with through the use of his Fish-man Karate. When used in conjunction with the martial arts, Gai is able to do a lot more with a lot less energy, allowing the Fish-man to fight for even longer while being able dish out much more.
  • Sei Karada (清体 Sei Karada; lit. “Pure Body”): One of the first techniques that Gai was forced to learn under the tutelage of Gonbei, Gai is able to change the structure and pattern of his biological consumption in order to safely devour, ingest or remove any poisons or impurities within his body. Gai first displayed this during his earlier training sessions where Gonbei forced him to breathe a toxic gas, which Gai expelled from his system in a moment of desperation to remove it from his lungs and back out his mouth. Gai had also used this technique to withstand and adjust to Gonbei's ability to take air away from victims, changing the structure within his lungs to adapt and survive in order to avoid passing out and dying from asphyxiation.

Lóng yá

GaiKnifeR01

Lóng yá () is the only weapon that Gai constantly carries on his person, usually bringing it our for fast slashing attacks as he hides it within his sleeve. This gold dagger is quite decorative to be brought into battle, yet its enhanced sharpness and durability makes it all the more suitable for combat, despite its appearance on the battlefield only lasting a few seconds at a time. A gold dragon's face is carved from the blade itself, with gold scales going up the hilt and creating a bumpy texture along the handle. The cross-guard as well is very decorated but its small size makes it useless in catching blades and protecting Gai's hands during swordplay, making Lóng yá mainly suitable for offensive handling...

History

Past, 1553 - 1577

Early Life

As the son of a fish-man and a human World Noble, Gai was granted refuge within his grandfather's house as a World Noble himself, hiding his true origins in order to keep his family's legacy and reputation safe. As a result of this, however, his mother was forced to marry another noble in a faraway location as compensation, whilst also securing a higher valued family as part of their own. In secret, his father would often visit Gai in the deeper, underground sections of Mary Geoise, where the two would train and perfect many techniques of Fish-Man Karate, and on Gai's own accord, Fish-Man Jujutsu. Having started at a young age, Gai was turned from a weak timid boy into a disciplined and obedient fighter, moulded into the shape that his father so wished. However, this came at the expense of being at the receiving end of many demonstrations, as well as the lack of fatherly love and a feeling of unwantedness from his own kin. Especially the kin that really mattered to Gai at the time. By the end of his training, he had become already used to the effects of Fish-Man Karate, sparing little to no reaction and being able to withstand some of the harsher shockwaves that his father had punished him by. It was at that time that Gai developed a sort of hate for him, which he used as a fuel for his continued training of Fish-Man Karate and Jujutsu.

When Gai had become eighteen, he was cast out by his grandfather and sent to live his life away from Mary Geoise, never to return. Gladly accepting this, Gai went on his way to build upon the skills he had already learned, picking up the art of fighting with blades and firearms from those he had come across in his journey.

To increase profits and his name around the seas, Gai joined a seperate criminal network, composed of other Underworld dealers, headed by a mysterious Madame Geld. There, he met Underworld assassin, Bendis, and business rival, Ferrigno Agostino, who also worked in the slave trade and was the best in the whole organisation. While it is still debated who challenged who, Gai came out victorious by stealing Agostino's ship and all his treasure, which he had taken the golden dagger, Lóng yá from. At the time, Gai was only commandeering a small rowboat with an unknown individual, eventually taking the ship for himself and using it in the future. He would continue to work with the organisation up until his disappearance, absent from the eventual downfall as Madame Geld and Agostino retired to live out the rest of their lives in peace.

During the time of his days out on sea, Gai became the captain of a fairly large crew known as the 'Grey Coat Pirates' who garnered an infamous reputation for being very successful at their job. Their cooperation with the slave trade and their numerous encounters and dealings with World Nobles caused them to gain many rivals, rivals who may had been captured as well and sold off by Gai and his crew to remove competition. Unbeknownst to the crow, most of these dealings with World Nobles was driven by a motivation of Gai to find his mother, hoping that one of the clients would lead him to the location of his mother. It was in this occupation that Gai had encountered Nero, the 'Mighty Poet', to who he frequently gave slaves to in return for services that he needed.

During this time, Gai had managed to capture Olsen Alfhild and her crew to sell them off as slaves, selling the former and a few others to a noble family in the east. He had also managed to cross paths with Arietta Melody, drawn in by her music which had been influenced by the Sare Sare no Mi, and recruiting her into his crew to boost the morale of his men to keep them working. Despite the boss-worker relationship they shared early on, they eventually became friends, allowing Melody to feel more at peace with the Grey Coat Pirates.

A Rise of the Slaughter Pirates

During early 1577, the Grey Coat Pirates attacked and invaded a ship out in the middle of the sea[41], opting to murder them all and take their valuables rather than capture them and sell them off as slaves. The ensuing battle concluded with the destruction of their ship, having been dragged away from the fight and kill the rest of the crew members that remained hidden on board[42]. Upon realising that the sailors' ship had been tampered with and was unfixable, along with the the fact that there was no coin onboard at all[43], the Grey Coat Pirates were stranded out at sea, only being able to eat fish that they had to catch before they could be rescued.

This could only continue for so long, as before they knew it, the fish didn't return to their part of the sea and left them without food for days causing tension to strain the group and several crew members to lose hope in their chances of survival. Plagued with the feeling of obligation as captain of the crew, Gai made the ultimate decision to succumb to the worst sin he could think of and kill his first mate, not knowing the devil fruit that they had eaten prior would soon change his crew for the worse. Offering the flesh of his quartermaster in order to feed his crew, the consumption of crew members would continue for a while before they could escape, but the changes of Gai's mental state and the physical state of his crew had began twisting them into monsters that became ruthless, with his crew especially developing an appetite for solely flesh. Gai himself did not partake in the cannibalism as he waited until the fish could return to regain his strength, but by the time they did, it was already too late for what remained of his crew.

Ten months would pass since their initial stranding before a marine ship noticed the stranded vessel out in sea, eventually lured to boarding it by the cries of help from Gai. When the marines had boarded the ship, they could see what it had become after months of cannibalism and isolation, with blood and bones covering the deck, and Gai by himself to introduce the marines on board. Directing them to the levels below the ship, the officers were introduced to what the crew members had became: rabid, humanoid creatures with claws extending from their fingers and cloudy eyes that obscured their pupils, only able to communicate in animalistic snarls and growls. Horrified at the sight, the marines fired down at the creatures after given the command to eat, showing that they still were able to follow Gai's instructions within this animalistic state.

The crew mowed down the marine force and invaded their ship, also taking out the officers that tried defending it to no avail. One marine in particular, their supposed commander, made his entrance onto the field and briefly fought Gai, which lasted for a small moment with Gai being thrown towards the front of the ship throughout the entire encounter. Holding himself back, Gai called onto the assistance of one of the creatures to fight the commander, to which it responded the instant it heard and engaged in combat with the prominently large man. In the early stages of the battle, the creature displayed its superior abilities to the human man, its claws shredding through the skin of the commander as well as holding the durability and endurance to withstand powerful blows from him as he needed a lot of force to even make him budge. As soon as the marine equipped himself with gold knuckledusters, however, both Gai and the creature recognised the edge that the marine had given himself before engaging back into battle. The marine's attacks were able to seriously damage and weaken the creature, finally being able to throw him around the deck and pummel him into the ground, all in front of Gai.

Then I guess I never was a captain. A captain at least takes care of his crew. I just stood by and watched mine turn into monsters...Gai responding to the marine commander.[44]

Seeing the levelled grounds the marine had brought with his weapons, Gai snuck up from behind and stabbed the marine in the back before the commander could continue, and proceeded to drag him to the side and throw him overboard into the waters, joining him right after. Despite the marine's efforts to escape, Gai had managed to finally kill the marine with a Fish-man Jujutsu technique, Shredding Ocean Pillar, which created a spinning current that tore into the marine and left nothing but scraps and Gai's dagger in place[40]. With the vessel cleared of all opposing force, Gai and the remainder of the Grey Coat Pirates took control and returned to civilisation, painting the boat in its dark, grim colours, and using the ship to carry out more raids on unsuspecting towns and islands that were in its path. These multiple raids accumulated a Beli 20,000,000 bounty, which for that time was quite little compared to other pirates of that year.

Along his journeys, Gai was able to recruit the doctor, Tine Rena, for his crew as well as reunite with Alfhild, whom he had also recruited. In the span of a few months, Alfhild and Rena had proven their worth to Gai and entered his circle of trust, with Alfhild being chosen to be his first-mate.

Visions of the event seemed to have haunted Gai's mind soon after, manifesting as nightmares whenever he slept and leaving him with the feeling of guilt. Awakening to Rena entering his room, the now ship's doctor, who gave him a medical tea before informing him that he was wanted by his first mate as soon as he woke up. After meeting with Alfhild on deck, Gai was informed that the ship's meat supplies for the Damned and the Hollow had been running severely low, enough to cause two of the Damned to being fighting each other in an effort to feed. Angered by this discovery, Gai called everyone one deck in order to question them, wanting to know who was in charge of keeping check of the ship's meat supply and failed to report the shortages.[15] After no response from any of the crew members, Gai proceeded to use a Fish-Man technique as a warning for them all, clapping his hands and releasing a powerful shockwave that rippled around him and forced everyone else to fall on the ground. The only one too affected was Alfhild, who fell to her knees but still struggled to hold herself up.[45]

Discovering that the one he wanted was a Hollow, Gai quickly approached the downed pirate and pointed a gun in his face. Without a second to spare, Gai fired a shot into the crew member's face, amazing and terrifying everyone around him, with Alfhild yelling from the helm to stop joking, revealing that the crew member's face had remained intact because of their supernatural abilities. Disappointed with the way that the crew member had failed their only job as well as expressing fear to having a weapon right up in their face, Gai scolded them before ordering the crew to continue sailing to their destination of Shirimasen.[46]

The island that Alfhild had directed the ship to head to was a marine stationed town, where Captain Stinson Barney was posted. Before the city could know, the Slaughter Pirates immediately launched their invasion, which was signalled by cannon fire that quickly began razing the settlement.[47] Leading an invasion force made up of Hollow and Damned, Alfhild and Gai set to work on bringing down a large wall constructed by the marine captain, eventually opting to climb over the structure and make their presence known to the defending force.[47] Follow after by the remainder of their forces, Gai moved on to lead the rest of his crew to the hunt, as they hacked and slashed at marines and civilians alike whilst Alfhild took to work on the captain. Much of the battle between Alfhild and Barney went unnoticed, having started off at the top of the wall before being brought down to the ground where Alfhild was eventually defeated and trapped.[48] On his own side of the hunt, Gai had cross paths with Goro Maiya, a petty marine officer who was stationed at the town under Barney's command. [49]

Noticing the effect of Barney and Alfhild's fight, Gai returned to the scene, only to be welcomed to a large meteor like construct in the middle of the battlefield. Assuming the worst of Alfhild, Gai continued on their battle by attacking the marine first, squeezing and twisting the cuffs that Barney had handed him into a projectile that he threw at the marine like a throwing knife. Before Barney would finish of Gai's first mate, he would be thrown off guard and forced to attack the pirate captain, resuming his battle in the state that Alfhild left him in but proceeded to throw in much more harder hitting attacks. Both fighters were able to show their skill and talent in the way they fought, Barney with the use of his Devil Fruit powers, and Gai with his Fish-Man Karate combined with his inherited Fish-Man strength.[50] During this battle, Gai was forced to take an attack head on, being the first time he displayed the use of Busoshoku Haki as more so a reactive defence just before getting hit. This attack had also managed to launch a large shard of glass under his eye, leaving a deep, bleeding wound that would later become one of Gai's more notable battlescars.[11][17] The battle would only end when Gai had managed to throw back a cannonball created by Barney, right back to Barney.

Both fighters were left in heavy wounds, with both Gai and Alfhild needed to take down the marine captain. Before Gai could finish off his opponent, Alfhild emerged from her ruined container and stopped her captain from killing Barney, convincing him to let the marine go instead and allow the World Government to hunt them down. Reluctantly, Gai accepted it and held back from running after Barney, though suffered the after effects of the adrenaline rushed he experienced after thinking that Barney had killed Alfhild, as all pains he should have experienced through the fight came rushing back to him, leaving him in a weakened state.[49] Before they had left the ruined town, all dead marines and civilians were carried back to the Wild Hunt to be stored as food for the crew. Due to Gai's withdrawal from the hunt to fight Barney, however, it is unknown how many civilians and marines had managed to make it out of the town.

I know. But I guess it holds some significance... Like you said. We're going to need to change, and I suppose that raid may have done us better than we thought.Gai's response to Olsen Alfhild calling his new scar 'ugly'.[13]

After the battle, Gai and Alfhild were tended to by Rena, with Gai stitching up his wound by himself and Alfhild relaxing on the medical beds as Rena went off somewhere else. After reaching for his coat to leave the office, Gai discovered a grey mask that fell from within it, with Alfhild revealing that it was her who hid the mask inside as a gift to him to hide his scar.[51]

As a result of their actions on Shiramasen, with only Barney to inform the other marines of what the Slaughter Pirates were, Alfhild had received a bounty of Beli 40,000,000, where as Gai had a boost of Beli 80,000,000 and bringing his overall bounty up to Beli 100,000,000.[52]

A few months after their attack on Shiramasen and the increase of both Gai and Alfhild's bounty, the Slaughter Pirates would continue on several raids throughout many islands on their path, leaving very little to none escaping, and thus preserving their bounties as there was noone to report them to the marines. One particular raid had managed to leave many fighters of the Slaughter Pirates severely wounded, and at a time when Tine Rena was only able to make enough for Gai and Alfhild alone. On their way to Obscuria, the pirates came across a small island known as Minisle, which they stopped outside of so that many members could rest and heal their wounds. Wanting fresh air and to swim, Gai departed and swam to shore where Urashima Taro was fishing, who much to Gai's dismay, managed to catch the captain at the end of his hook before lifting the Fish-Man out of the water. Shocked, Gai and Taro began questioning the other, Gai wondering about Taro's strength and ability to reel him out of the water, and Taro wondering what Gai was even doing in the first place. Their encounter would be joined by an angry Tine Rena, who marched up the shore to where Gai and Taro were to scold her captain. After a brief chat, Gai and Rena recruited Taro into the Slaughter Pirates and continued on their way to Obscuria.[53]

The Slaughter Pirates had arrived before the Bell Pirates had stepped onto the island, with them already getting comfortable into the atmosphere of the Devil's Cellar, an Underworld market hidden underground. While Taro was off exploring the grounds and Rena with Alfhild walking around to find ingredients to make medicine for the crew, Gai placed himself within the audience of a slave auction going on.[54] As one of the slaves, a three eyed humanoid called Mei-bun, was put into the spotlight, Gai caught interest and clashed with another Fish-Man audience member in order to buy her. At that moment, upcoming pirate captain Bell Q. Dan entered the auction and began creating a scene, disgusted by the whole event and its attendees.[55] This causes Gai to become irritated by the young man's ignorance and retaliate by threatening to kill Mei-bun, having decided that after she had served her purpose she would have been turned into food for the Damned anyway.[56]

How uncivilised to be fighting in a place like this. If you’ve got respect for good business, you would have shut up and left. But if you want to mess with it, then there’s only one fix to that... Allow me to show you expendable property is.Gai to Dan before firing at Mei-bun.[56]

The two enter a clash between eachother, with Dan showing off what he could do with his Devil Fruit, and Gai with his Fish-Man Karate, although their fight comes to an unfruitful end as it was interrupted by Saint Dolphus, exposing who both of the pirates was even as Gai revealed his Underworld name to be Avsati.[57] This angers Gai and motivates the captain to hunt down the World Noble, who he assumes to be on the island with them.[58]

Just before he could leave to do so, ceiling of the Devil's Cellar began to move downwards, possibly to crush many of the visitors of the Underworld mall. While taking no part in helping evacuate or to stop the ceiling, Gai had some hand in aiding with the surprise appearance of PB-Androids, who were called in by Phoebe to evacuate the civilians within the area as well as to eliminate the pirate threat. As Gai was also technically on her list, the captain aided by stealing a passerby's flintlock and firing at one of the androids before taking his leave, not knowing if the shot had actually hit to do something, as he was in a rush to find Dolphus.[59]

Making it outside and just catching Taro and his new friend, Coco, the three made their way to the shore in the direction of where the Wild Hunt had been docked. Gai thought that taking the ship to circle the island may had been a safer way to find the man, though another surprise appearance by Henry Benjamin forced Gai to stay back and leave Taro and Coco to find the Wild Hunt themselves. Unsure of whether Benjamin was with Phoebe or here just by chance, Gai questioned the marine's motives and presence, which was quickly answered by an outright attack launched by Benjamin. The two clashed with brute force as Gai relied on his Fish-Man Karate to battle Benjamin's use of Rokushiki, with Benjamin holding more so an advantage as Gai was fighting on land. Not wanting to repeat the same limited battle he had back on Shiramasen, Gai fought his way towards the water, something that Benjamin tried preventing but ultimately failed to do, for as soon as Gai moved into the waves he was able to make proper use of his Fish-man Karate and Jujutsu. Benjamin tried several times to catch Gai out, a couple of times being Benjamin going into the water to pull Gai back onto land, which again proved useless to the marine. Gai had managed to show how well he could control the water at the level he was, using his Fish-man senses and capabilities to counter Benjamin's attacks, who at the same time countered Gai's own. The battle was lengthy, with not much happening between the two as they continued to counter and return fire from where they were, with Benjamin on land and Gai in the water. But after Gai had managed to threaten and punish Benjamin's last attempt at pulling Gai out of the way, by trapping Benjamin inside at the risk of having his head crushed by the marine, Benjamin turned his sights to the Wild Hunt.[60]

Due to his extremely fast swimming speed, Gai was able to make it to the Wild Hunt's port before Benjamin, and proceeded to destroy the dock and pier in a desperate reach to hinder Benjamin from reaching the ship. This in turn allowed Benjamin to know that Gai was still on the marine's tail, but to also warn his crew members on board that something was going on and to prepare. [61] Luckily enough, Taro had managed to make it on board before both the captain and the marine could move their battle to the ship's location, and responded by calling forth Arietta Melody. Noticing that Taro had now began returning fire and defending the ship, Gai sank back into the water to prepare a trap, having used Taro's signal as a means to locate Benjamin on land. Manipulating the waters and forming currents that dug into under the sand in order to join small pockets of water that laid under the beach, Gai pushed upwards a cell of water that surrounded an approaching Taro and Melody with Benjamin in its centre, Melody already preparing to use her Devil Fruit power to weaken Benjamin's defence. Before Taro and Melody would make it to land, Benjamin tore through the sand and somehow Gai's trap as he resurfaced on the other side, retreating back into the island to go and save civilians rather than continue fighting. [62]

After regrouping with the rest of the Slaughter Pirates, save for Alfhild and Rena, the crew made their way back to the Devil's Cellar with the intent of meeting with the first-mate and doctor, only to find themselves encountering a small town area where Dolphus and Phoebe were located. Presented with the chance to claim his revenge, Gai devised a plan prior to entering that involved splitting the crew up to different parts of the town before heading in with a group consisting of himself, Taro, Aiko and a few other crew members. Upon realising that it was indeed Dolphus and the World Government android that looked like the ones he had encountered back in the market, Gai prepared to lash out and attack Dolphus, but not before Bell Q. Dan made himself known to Phoebe by attacking from the air. As the android distracted herself with the young pirate, Gai went ahead and charged towards Dolphus with a special piece of meat. The captain of the Slaughter Pirates was able to quickly close the distance between him and the World Noble, before proceeding to shove the said piece of meat into Dolphus' throat. Unfortunately, after having swallowed the piece of meat, Dolphus had managed to regain a grip on his gun and fire a shot into Gai's torso, leaving a noticeable wound in the captain's abdomen. Still pumped by the adrenaline from finally finding Dolphus, Gai ignored the wound and shifted himself around to continue pinning Dolphus in order to strike him in the face with a 'Hyakumaigawara Seiken'. The strike would be intercepted by Phoebe, however, catching his fist before it met with Dolphus' face, and proceeded to unleash massive amounts of electricity into the Half Fish-man before attempting to slash him with her Plasma Cutter.

Thanks to Taro's initiative, the young fisherman was able to reel Gai out of the way from Phoebe's strike, with only a noticeable cut from one side of his torso to the other. Weakened by the gunshot, slash, and electricity, Gai departed from the android and the World Noble with one last gift: a call to Aiko to trigger the signal. At once, Aiko followed through and fired a flare into the sky, causing gunfire to come from every direction around Phoebe from multiple hiding spots around the area. This would soon be joined by another flare that Aiko shoot soon after, to initiate a second wave of attacks from the Slaughter Pirates' force.

A few days after the events of Obscuria, Gai and Alfhild

A Bigger Boat

Main article: A Bigger Boat

After several raids that resulted in the loss of a great number of Slaughter Pirates, Gai set course to follow the map that he had bought, that led to the location of the 'Wildest Hunt', an Elbafian battleship that was used by giant pirates to escape to Paradise many decades ago. With the introduction of Valor, Moxie and Maxie, Gai justified his search as getting extra room for the latter, who were quite large for the Wild Hunt. The night before reaching Es=Nezinu, Gai and Alfhild met within the captain's quarters to discuss things, with the topic of Gai's mother and travelling to New World coming up towards the end. As Alfhild began to question Gai's motives, Gai response confirmed Alfhild's worry of him not being completely sure that what he was looking for really was where he was travelling to. Alfhild would then turn to the state of the Slaughter Pirates and the Damned, to which Gai said that he expected that none of them would stick around with him to the end, but hoped that they would have at least left without regret, before taking his leave.[63]

I don't expect any of you to stick around till the end, whether alive or dead. But I expect that you may at least leave without regret, or at least feel as though you've tried your best in trying to pay for your sins. You don't need to pay it blood like me, but at least pay it with blood of some sort, even if it must be your own.Gai's response to Alfhild about the Slaughter Pirates.[64]

Upon reaching the island and landing on the beach by rowboat, Gai embarked on his search with a small search party consisting of Arietta Melody, Aiko, Urashima Taro, Tine Rena and a couple other pirates, who he trusted were able to take care of themselves in the safe environment of the island.[64] Leaving by himself, Gai went in search for more information on the Wildest Hunt, eventually coming across a game center where many games of many kinds were being played by visitors and locals to the island. There, he would be stopped by a marine woman who saw Gai looking at the map that he brought and challenged him for it, putting relevant and more information on the land to entice Gai to take part. The two would partake in a game of 'battleships' which resulted in a loss for the marine and a win for Gai, who rightfully demanded the information from his opponent. As they traveled to a more secluded spot to exchange the information, the marine revealed their name to be Goro Maiya, a petty officer of the World Government, to which Gai hid his name under the alias 'Nero Atosaki'. Maiya revealed the actual location of the ship and how to retrieve it, explaining the ship's backstory which was relevant to what Gai could expect when bringing the vessel back to the surface. Having conversed for a long period of time, Gai and Maiya took their leave, though not before Gai stopped Maiya to bring up the fact that they actually knew eachother the whole time. Much to Gai's belief, Maiya agreed and called Gai by his real name, as well as mentioning his bounty and the crew that he was associated with. She also revealed that she was there at Shiramasen during the time of the Slaughter Pirates' raid on the town, mentioning that the marine captain Barney wasn't the only one to escape after the events of A Scent of Death Wherever I Go.[65] While the information that Maiya told Gai was reassured to be true by Maiya herself, she explained that it would have been the best way to lure Gai and his crew out so that she could get revenge for what had happened to her comrades during the raid.[66]

Later on during the day, Gai regrouped with the search party, the recruited Burr Bors, Charlie Jack and Okada Yomotsu, along with Alfhild and a couple more crew mates who accompanied her. There he explained the plan after figuring it out with a diagram he had set up before hand, splitting the group up between a land crew and a retrieval crew.

Sea and Storm

Main article: Sea and Storm

Arriving at an unknown port town in Paradise, sometime after confronting the kraken, Calamity, the Slaughter Pirates were confronted or were caught up in the arrival of a large Skypeian known as Gonbei. Having destroyed the ship he had landed on as well as release a shockwave strong enough to send the Wildest Hunt drifting backwards forcefully despite being anchored, Gai took intrigue in the appearance of the strong creature, which some mistook to be the kraken they had met before.[67] Jumping off the boat and swimming to where the shockwave had come from, Gai was surprised to see that state that Gonbei had arrived in: a rather timid, lanky man who didn't look to bare the kind of strength needed for the kind of force he experienced moments ago. An exchange of elemental bullets, a shot of compressed air from Gonbei and a water bullet from Gai, caused the two captains to engage in combat, with Gonbei revealing his true form during another exchange of strikes from both combatant's respective martial arts.[68]

Gonbei's 'Arashi Tenohiro' was enough to send Gai flying backwards and tearing his shirt to bits, forcing Gai's hand to using 'Kalamidad' as a response. The force produced from the clap affected the area around them, affecting even the civilians who were inside the city and sailors who watched from their ships. The waters of the port were forced further inland, grabbing civilians who were injured or dead from Gai's response, while waves were pushed backwards into sea normally, carrying on for miles. Gonbei was able to use his dial in an attempt to absorb the energy coming for him, but was unable to take in all the force as he still ended up being forced back, skipping over the water until he could regain control with his wings. The Skypeian quickly flew back to Gai and used another dial in conjunction with his martial arts to fire an attack of a funnel of air, seemingly coated in iron, that collided with Gai and threw him into the railing behind him. Quick to get back on his toes, Gai kicked the damaged railing into the water and jumped backwards after it to escape Gonbei's sight for the mean time, retreating into the depths to attack from underneath. With his Fish-Man Jujutsu, Gai fired 'Shredding Ocean Pillar' into the bottom of the ship in a way that it grew in size to consume the entire vessel that Gonbei was standing on, with their attacks at this point closely resembling each other. The spiraling beam of water completely destroyed what was left of the ship, and thanks to the quick thinking of the Skypeian, sent Gonbei high up into the air after having to use a dial to produce a barrier to protect himself. With where he was, Gonbei dropped a seed he combined with a bit of the clouds that surrounded him into the sea near the port, waiting a few seconds to allow a large beanstalk to grow from the waters and shake the area of the island they were fighting at, watching as vines quickly grew outward into the water and into the land nearby.

This same beanstalk would catch Gai off by surprise and lift him high into the air where he would have to avoid several pieces of debris that were to fall onto him to rain from under him as he tried to make his way back to the water. A brief moment was shared between the Fish-man and the Skypeian as they charged towards eachother along the body of the beanstalk, Gai using a spear that Gonbei had managed to pierce him with and firing it at the large man, only for him to use his Kenbunshoku Haki to anticipate and so eviscerate the spear with a beam that aimed to destroy everything before him, along with Gai. The beam managed to push Gai upwards and unlodge him from the grip he had on the beanstalk's body with the use of his spines. Gai recovered his place on the beanstalk and continued his way back down, though Gonbei had undone the distance he had covered and set him back still high on the humungous plant. Fueled by anger, Gai fired a wave of Uchimizu shots made from the sap of the plant down towards Gonbei who had landed backfirst onto the ground, wanting it to keep Gonbei down whilst he could continue his run uninterrupted, though the Skypeian would use his Seimi Kikan to enlarge features of his body and shield himself from the attack after being grazed and finally pierced by some of the shots that actually hit him.[69] Both captains would eventually signal their ships in an attempt to get their attention, Gonbei signalling the Golden Icarus to descend from the sky and Gai assuming a Fish-man stance as a way to alert the crew of the severity of the situation. The fight would come to a close when Gonbei released the same force Gai had used earlier in their confrontation, using Kalamidad at 10 times its original power and sending Gai plummeting back to the ground and breaking his body. Bloodied and beaten, Gai pulled himself into the water to regenerate, healing back what he could before reemerging to clean the battlefield that they had made of the town, using his advanced Fish-man Jujutsu to pull debris into the ocean and cleanse the area, calling down the Skypeian to meet with him.

We can’t possibly let this be our last or only fight now.Gai to Gonbei after their fight.[70]

The two captains continue to talk and express admirance for eachother's strength and skill, with Gai asking to be taught Gonbei's style of Seimei Kikan as well as suggesting a possible alliance in the future. Drinking to eachother's honour, the two promise to be the ones to kill eachother, with Gai quickly accepting Gonbei into his circle of trust due to the emotion he would finally express in their conversation.[71]

Weeks passed by as training for Gai's Seimei Kikan took place on deck of the Wildest Hunt, with Gonbei forcing Gai through measures to ensure that he could see what the young captain was capable of doing. What seemed to catch Gonbei the most was Gai's quick hold of Life Return's technique of Sei Karada, expelling poisonous gas from inside his body after having been forced to breathe it in by Gonbei himself.[72] Gai was also able to show the force that he was able to easily make from the combination of his Seimei Kikan and Fish-man Karate, which both seemed to impress both captains as they wondered at the force Gai was able to expel with little effort.[73] Before they could continue on, Anasha, doctor of the Redwing Pirates, came down to inform the captains of the approaching land, whose same news would be shared by Aiko who came rushing after. The former slave and the current slave trader exchanged words from the introduction the doctor had in their conversation, returning Gai and Gonbei's friendly rivalry back into an image of a sour, neutral relationship.

Then I guess it would be fair to break the little birdie’s win- oh wait. Looks like someone got to them first... Remember where you stand, slave, otherwise you’ll be back in chains under the foot of a World Noble.[70]

Arriving on the empty island of Nulle Part’e, the Slaughter Pirates, the Redwing Pirates and the Mirror Pirates joined together in the centre of the sandbank, their ships and other modes of transport surrounding the small sand island. The Slaughter Pirates' negotiation party was composed of Olsen Alfhild, Ricardo D. Diabolito, Valour, Sacramentum, Okada Yomotsu and Gai himself, handpicked by the captain to represent the crew to the other members of the potential alliance. Being the one to set up the meeting, Gai introduced the other crews to the situation, bringing forth the idea of the alliance from the suggestion of combining the powers and talents of their crews together as a means to becoming a prominent force in Paradise. Together with Alfhild, Gai and his first mate explained their situation to the other crews, letting them know their intentions of moving past the threshold of the Red Line to enter the New World, but also pointing out that their supplies of meat for the Damned and Hollow may be at risk because of the transition. In return, the Slaughter Pirates promised the aid of their crew in return for such rations to the crews that were able to pay them in flesh. This request wasn't accepted by first by other members of the negotiation parties, namely Redwing Pirate navigator Fate, who voiced out against the Slaughter Pirates' murderous and bloody reputation in Paradise. Nonetheless, many of the present parties agreed that their intentions and goals were similar to that of Gai's: The Mirror Pirates need for more bodies for their experiments, and the Redwing Pirates seeking to also pass into the New World. After some short fights between negotiation members and the idea of exchanging crew members as proxy's to the other participating crews, which eventually led to Sacramentum temporarily joining the Redwings only for a Nero and Fate to join the Slaughter Pirates' ranks, the newly formed Megâlo Entente began the writing and creation of their Codex. [73]

The Slaughter Pirates and their allies attacked several towns and islands thereafter, building up a force of pirates that could be reckoned with, and giving time for the captains to continue their training, knowing that they will be moving into the New World soon. Gai especially had time to train the Seimei Kikan that was taught to him by Gonbei, learning to spread the effect of his Seimei Kikan to the rest of his body and also building on his Life-Return technique. Eventually, their series of raids would lead up to the attack on Ismeretlen, an island governed by Gai's World Noble accomplice; Inryō Riku. Riku's forces were composed of marines under his command, which had a presence in Ismerelten's port city, Kikoto. By the time of the Slaughter Pirate's arrival to Ismerelten, Dunkel Armondo served as Riku's right hand man despite only being a lieutenant-commander, along with Goro Maiya, a former marine that served in Shiramasen who had faced the Slaughter Pirates before. Preparing for their next attack, Gai had Moxie fitted with a saddle and cannons to each side, ordering for the Wildest Hunt to approach from the sea and sitting the Wildest Hunt far out into the water, preventing ships from entering or exiting the battlefield. Gai lead his men across the waters for his invasion of the shore at the start of the battle, his rowboat being sunk by the port's defence towers which only forced Gai to travel underneath the water. The initial onslaught was brutal, pirates and marines killing eachother just as the other crews were making their entrance, where the Redwing Pirates most notably attacked from the sky to strike inland and take the marines' defences by surprise. Unbeknownst to the pirates, Riku had previously called in marine group, Iron Curtain, who had arrived just before the Megâlo Entente's surprise attack. The marines had split up during the fray, with returning face, Henry Benjamin stationed at the port to help lead the marines against the invaders. It was on the port that Gai and Gonbei would face the Slaughter Pirate Captain's previous foe.

Gai had arrived riding Moxie, sending the large hound to find Alfhild and the others, though Moxie would soon after get attacked by Benjamin's own companion, Cringer. Gonbei would join just after Gai and Benjamin exchanged words between the two, before Gai would ultimately launch the first attack against Benjamin. Picking up an orb of water with his bident, Gai launched the projectile towards the marine at the speed and power of a large Uchimizu shot, whilst Gonbei would leap into the air and deploy a rainstorm of feathers, each concentrating their attack on Benjamin collectively. Using Tekkai to disable Gai's attack and withstand Gonbei's, returning his own attack with a combination of Soru and a swift strike towards Gai's kidney. Reflexively, Gai countered Benjamin's attack with 'Hyakumaigawara Seiken', inflicting enough force and shock to de-power Benjamin's cannon-like shot. With the meeting of fists, Gai turned his arm and grabbed onto Benjamin's wrist. The battle between Gai and Gonbei against Benjamin lasted for so long that all three combatants had been heavily injured, each of them seeking to finish the other side. The battle culminated in Benjamin's defeat, however, a negotiation between the alliance and the marines led to the release of the Rear-Admiral, and the Redwing's Quartermaster Alder Kaede. Gai, disheartened by the loss of Sacramentum, was held in the ship to be confronted by Alfhild, returned from her battle with old enemy Goro Maiya. Though the air between them was tense, Alfhild was quick to spot what seemed to be a bite mark on the captain's leg as he was held down for medical attention.

Quotes

Alfhild: "And what makes you think your mom's in New World? What if she isn't? What if she was in Paradise this whole time, and you've just placed thousands of miles between you and her?"

Gai: "That's way too much worrying for my liking. To be honest, I think I'll just assume she's there and hope that I'm right."Gai to Olsen Alfhild, talking about his mother.

"We've all got our sins that we've got to pay back for, that's the whole reason why I even keep the Damned alive. I failed them while they were still human, so I'll repay them by serving them in the state they are in now."Gai to Olsen Alfhild

"Do you know where you are boy? Folk like you shouldn't even be here. This is just how the world works, that girl up there is now property."Gai to Bell Q. Dan, talking about Mei-bun.

Then it’s settled. Today we celebrate, today is the day our crews band together! If you die from anything but my fist, then I’ll drag you from hell to back here, just so that I can put you back there myself!Gai's promise to Gonbei.[71]
