Haki (覇気,, Haki?, lit. "Ambition") is a term used to describe the mysterious power that allows the user to utilize their own spiritual energy for various purposes.
It can be used to sense people's spiritual energy and predict their actions, give the user a protective coating of spiritual energy, and, for a certain group of "chosen ones", overpowered the willpower of others.[1]
All living beings in the world are capable of learning Haki, being the manifestation of their will. However, most people do not notice or fail to awaken it, causing it to be hidden from the general populace.
Overview
Haki is a power that lies dormant in all the world's creatures, but it's rare for most individuals to ever awaken that ability.[1] It is possible for a person to awaken their Haki through intense training or extreme shock. There have been rare instances of a person being born with the ability awakened, with no known training.
Due to the fact that Haki originates from an individual's spirit and not their physical body, users are still capable of using it even if their spirit is . Haki can also become stronger, especially when a Haki user battles stronger opponents.
Despite their great capabilities, Haki is not limitless as it can be depleted from overuse, rendering the user unable to use it for a set period while it regenerates.
Types of Haki
Haki is separated into three categories, or "types" (色,, shoku?). Generally, people tend to specialize in a single type of Haki. However, it is possible to improve on different types over the course of time. The three types of Haki are:
- Kenbunshoku Haki, which grants users a sixth sense of the world around them and limited precognitive abilities.[1] Users of this Haki can sense people's presence, strength, emotions, and intentions.
- An advanced level of Kenbunshoku allows the user to see a short period into the future.
- Busoshoku Haki, which allows the user to use their own spiritual energy as armor to defend against attacks, as well as make their own attacks more potent.[1] A person can apply the armament to a section of their body, over their entire body, and even apply it to their weapons.[1]
- An advanced level of Busoshoku allows the user to emit the armament a short distance without a medium.[2]
- A higher grade of advanced Busoshoku allows the user to make the emitted armament flow into a _target's body and destroy it from the inside out.
- An advanced level of Busoshoku allows the user to emit the armament a short distance without a medium.[2]
- Haoshoku Haki, which grants the user the ability to overpower the will of others.[1] This results in the victims being knocked unconscious or becoming temporarily subservient of the Haki user. Haoshoku is a rare form of Haki that only one in several million people are born with the ability to use.[3]
