The University of Tres de Febrero donated to Wikimedia Commons a series of photographs of the artits who participated in theBienal Sur.
This donation is the product of months of work together the institution being the donation one of the stages of the alliance that began in the middle of 2016 with the edith-a-ton in the Hotel de Inmigrantes.

#1lib1ref - what's next?

State Library of Queensland embraced the #1lib1ref campaign in January and February 2017.

The statistics were impressive.

• 1,028 citations added
• 97% of citations related to Queensland topics or content
• Most edited page – Muttaburra (46 citations)
• 148 pages had single citations added
• Content focus – Queensland places, people, War Memorials and Schools
• Queensland War Memorials pages – 30 citations
• 41 (including 2 staff from other government departments) attended awareness sessions
• 18 staff attended training
• 18 staff attended mentoring/edit sessions
• 35 staff added citations (including 2 field work students and 1 volunteer)

Capitalising on the enthusiasm, new skills and greater confidence of staff working with Wikipedia is the next step. Running regular edit sessions with a specific focus is one idea we are taking forward - February will be aligned with International Womens' Day and staff will work on editing, adding citations and adding media related to women in Queensland.

Wikimedia Commons: a hands on introduction for GLAMs in Sydney

State Library of New South Wales hosted a workshop to introduce gallery, library, archives and museum (GLAM) staff to Wikimedia Commons on 13 February 2017. The workshop was part of the ALIA Information Online 2017 conference program. Topics included staff editing guidelines, project pages, the institutional business case, copyright statements, statistics, metadata and categories, image quality and contributing images.

Local heritage of Geraardsbergen on Wikipedia

Getting photos of all the monuments on Wikipedia is difficult. The most popular cultural heritage sites already got a photo, but we also want to give the less known monuments a face on Wikipedia. To make this happen we collaborate with local organisations.

On 1 February we organised a local information session in Geraardsbergen together with Vormingplus. There we gave an introduction in Wikipedia, Wikimedia, how to take good quality photos and how to upload them to Wikimedia Commons.

On 12 February we organised for the same group of people a guided tour through Geraardsbergen along the local heritage sites of the city. With the tour the participants got the opportunity to take photos of local monuments for on Wikipedia.

Creating new articles on cultural heritage

February began with another prospect of partnership, this time, next to the Football Museum of São Paulo. During the conversation, we present some of the Wikimedia projects and the possibilities of production and insertion of new contents from the collection and the researches by the museum. The team, which collaborated with the publication and writing of entries during the Edit-a-thon BBC 100 Women, held in December 2016, showed interest in dealing with gender and women's issues in the field of culture and sport. Another focus of interest presented by the institution is to produce content on football clubs still non-existent on Wikipedia, providing materials, including an articulated work with these clubs. The dialogue with the institution has been in the direction of outlining the format of the partnership project to be developed.

Another important project that began in the month of February is the Rio from above. From the contact between the photographer Diego Baravelli and the Coordinator of the Wiki Education Brazil Group Rodrigo Padula the project was conceived with the objective of producing and making available aerial images of Rio de Janeiro in high quality, under Creative Commons licenses, aimed at improving articles on Wikipedia. The project has already been structured, is in the stage of contacting interested parties. The insertion of the first photographs should begin as early as March, with the submission of images from Bavarelli's personal collection.

In February also occurred the I Edit-a-thon Rio de Museus, a result of the articulation between the Wiki Education Brazil Group, the COMCOL: ICOM International Committee for Collecting and the Management of Museums of the Municipal Secretary of Culture of Rio de Janeiro. The event aimed to disseminate the theme of open access and broaden the interest and knowledge of museum professionals by expanding the available cultural heritage content.

The activities were carried out in the The Art Museum of Rio - MAR and divided into two stages: one training lecture, held on February 3, in which the participants were presented to the Wikimedia projects developed in Brazil, focusing on the cultural area, and the edition marathon, held on February 21. During the marathon, 7 participants were present, who wrote 4 new articles. Participating in the event were members of the Museum Management of the Municipal Culture Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro, COMCOL: ICOM International Committee for Collecting Brazil, the Superintendency of Museums of the State Secretariat of Culture of Rio de Janeiro (SMU / SEC- RJ), The Art Museum of Rio - MAR, Bishop Museum of the Contemporary Art Rosary - mBrac and Historical Museum of the City of Rio de Janeiro.

On the 16th and 17th of February 2017 the European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting was held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. During the meeting, 33 representatives of various Wikimedia chapters and user groups as well as guest lecturers exchanged knowledge, skills and experience. The Wikimedians of Bulgaria user group also had its representative at the meeting – Delyan Drumev.

The project Connected Open Heritage is of interest for the Wikimedians of Bulgaria User Group who organized the competition “Wiki loves monuments” in 2015 and 2016. Ideas and possibilities were discussed for a future collaboration with Wikimedia France that works with the National archives of France.

Photos and documents from the Bulgarian Archives State Agency related to the World War I will be used in this year’s edition of Europeana that is dedicated to the period of the World War I.

The platform Ajapaik.ee for adding geotags and crowdsourcing rephotographs to historic images that was presented would definitely help in determining the geographic location of the images that are digitized in our collaboration with BASA. During the “Archives challenge” in 2016 there was a separate section dedicated to placing the geographic coordinates of the camera location. Hundreds of photos had their coordinates added and this tool would further facilitate the clear representation of geographic data of the depicted objects or regions.

GLAMpipe would make it easier for us to upload digitized images from BASA to Commons, which results in saving a lot of time.

New scanners for digitizing in BASA

In December 2016 Wikimedians of Bulgaria User Group was granted funding by the Wikimedia Foundation, which resulted in two new scanners being bought – a portable one for digitizing images/documents and a scanner for negatives and microfilms. As BASA performs inventory revision each January the practical usage of the scanners began in February 2017. Both scanners help us digitize images and documents faster and more efficiently. The scanner for negatives and microfilms allows for digitization of documents that we were not able to digitize until now. Moreover, personnel from BASA are scanning glass plaques by special request from Wikipedia.

Gathering sources for the BlackPower Edit-a-thon

Initiated by Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD, a partner with met during last WikiIndaba in Accra, the BlackPower Edit-a-thon was a simultaneous writing held in NYC, Accra, Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire on 25 February. As part of the Black History Month activities, this edit-a-thon focused on topics related to the History of black people.

In Côte d'Ivoire, during the preparation of this edit-a-thon we asked GLAM partners to provide us with sources (books, online articles, press articles, etc.) basing on a certain list of articles. Thanks to the sources provided for the edit-athon, several articles could be created / edited.

Attending a workshop with cultural organizations

The local bureau of Francophonie organized, from 15 to 17 February, a workshop with cultural organizations in view of the SIICA 2017, an international culture fair to be hosted in Abidjan. Wikimedia Community User Group of Côte d'Ivoire (WCUG-CI) was invited as a player of the media and ICT field.

We seized that occasion to speak about Wikipedia, the Wiki movement as a whole, and about the work being carried out locally : training young people, writing about our cultural heritage, etc.

#1lib1ref and slate museum

Several libraries or librarians took part in the second edition of the #1Lib1Ref campaign around the World. On the French Wikipedia, it a total of 317 edits (3.5 times more than last year!) made by 29 accounts (and 3 IP addresses) between January 15 and February 6. Thanks to the universities Bordeaux Montaigne, Rennes 1, and Rennes 2 ; special thanks to Culex who did 191 edits alone!

Nine Wikimedians of the local group visited the musée de l’ardoise de Trélazé (Slate Museum of Trélazé). After some sightseeing, they took pictures and notes to improve articles around the museum, its collection and its history.

Monthly "edit-a-thons" in Bordeaux

After a first session on 21st of January, local Wikipedians are now meeting once a month at the public library Flora Tristan. Helped by the librarians, the Wikipedians and public are encouraged to develop articles on a chosen theme, Wiki Loves Africa for the first session, and Women in sciences for the second one. The event will continue throughout the year.

As part of the #1lib1ref campaign, two training sessions, hands on practice and editathon​ ​were held at the Library & Information Center of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki​ ​on February​ 1st in cooperation with the Wikimedia Community User Group Greece. Invited were the librarians of the university and other libraries of the city​,​ ​and also the students of the Department of Library Science and Information Systems of ATEI​ ​Thessaloniki. The sum of the attendees was more than 40 librarians.

Divided Memories - Workshop and editathon

Wikipedia Workshop and Editathon was held at the Library of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art

On Thursday, February 16, a Wikipedia Workshop and Editathon was held at the Library of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, as part of the exhibition "Divided Memories 1940-1950. The Distance Between History and Experience" by the Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki jointly organized with the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, and the Deutsches Historisches Museum.

The workshop was part of Thesswiki, a project that began in 2015 under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and implemented by PostScriptum, in cooperation with the Wikimedia Community User Group Greece. This time Thesswiki was utilized as a study tool of cultural fermentation and artistic trends during the Occupation and the Civil War in Greece, as well as the representation of the people's memories.

Open by default meeting

On February the 1st the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences (DISPAC) of the University of Salerno hosted a seminar, organized by the University Libraries Center, on dissemination, research and development of cultural heritage through Wikimedia projects. The meeting was held on the occasion of the sixteenth anniversary of Wikipedia and the 1lib1ref campaign. The librarians of the GLAM/AIB Campania working group contributed to 58 articles under the campaign. More info on it.wiki.

European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting

On 16th and 17th of February the 2nd European GLAMwiki Coordinators Meeting has been hosted at the UNESCO Headquarters, in Paris. Paolo Brambilla, GLAM project manager for Wikimedia Italy, has attendend the meeting on behalf of the Italian chapter. The two-days meeting follows the 2015 edition and the aim was to share skills and best practices, coordinate projects, and consolidate connections between parts of our movement. Some members of the variuos European chapters have made their presentation on GLAM projects they're running or they're going to run for the next few months. Other presentations have been made by some invited guests coming from the Foundation, Europeana, Histropedia, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision / Open Cultuur Data and the European Space Agency. The afternoon time has been spent for parallel workshops on different topics, such as tools for the massive upload of images on Commons or the development of structured data for different GLAM wiki projects.

Edit-a-thon and collaboration with the Memorial House of Mother Theresa

This month we managed to establish a memorandum for collaboration with the Memorial House of Mother Theresa, located here in Skopje, Macedonia. We agreed upon exchanging materials and information about the museum itself, and around the life and work of Mother Theresa and her associates. In order to start the collaboration effectively we held a edit-a-thon in the memorial house, where the employees there created and edited articles on the previously mentioned topics.

On the edit-a-thon, first of Shared Knowledge for 2017, held on February 16th, 4 employees, one Shared Knowledge volunteer and two employees created and edited articles, and uploaded couple of photos from the museum on Commons. The main article about Mother Theresa was greatly edited, adding more information, correcting information that was untrue, and supplying more facts. Several articles about Mother Theresa's followers were made as well.

We expect more articles written based on the information that the institution will provide us.

On the end of the day, during four hours edit-a-thon 8 completely new articles were created, the main article about Mother Theresa was greatly improved, and 50 new photographs were uploaded on Commons, thanks to our new volunteer. 100 years of the Constitution of Mexico and Mexican flags: Edit-a-thon in the Center for the Study of Mexican History

On the last February 5, Mexico celebrated 100 years of the promulgation of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States of 1917. Besides governing the country, organizing the government and establishing the rights and obligations of Mexicans, the importance of this document for global history, is that it is the first such document in the world to set out social rights, rights current to date and which served as models in other documents. As a way to commemorate this date, along with holding another patriotic symbol, the Mexican flag (February 24), Wikimedia Mexico, Museo Soumaya and CARSO Center for the Study of Mexican History (CEHM), organized the first edit-a-thon in the CEHM, one of the most important centers of research, preservation and dissemination of documentation on the history of Mexico.

The articles to edit and create, revolved around issues such as constitutionalism and the history of Mexican flags. For that reason we include in this edition documentation, coins and bills, and photographs of the period that goes from the end of the government of Porfirio Diaz and the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, to the Constituent Congress and government of Venustiano Carranza. All these sources belong to the CEHM funds, some of this stay in a temporary exhibition in the Museo Soumaya.

At the end of the event, Josefina Moguel, curator of the exhibition and Coordinator of the Historical Archive at CEHM, and Alfonso Miranda, director of Museo Soumaya, offered a general tour of the libraries that make up the Center.

Twenty-four people were involved during the event. Of which 3 did so remotely and 21 edited in person. Of this area, two important aspects were that there were two new editors with no prior experience in Wikipedia, and that 71.42% of the participants were women.

In total, we edited 8 new articles, and we improved 16. Also, for Wikimedia Commons, 330 images were donated by the CEHM, which are in the process of being uploaded.

Rare drawings of Brazilian animals; Wikimedian-in-Residence Erfgoed Gelderland

Rare drawings of Brazilian animals by 17th-century Dutch painter Frans Post now on Wikimedia Commons

Frans Post (1612-1680) was a Dutch painter from Haarlem belonging to the Dutch School. Between 1636-1644, he received a commission from John Maurice of Nassau, then governor of Brazil, to travel to Brazil and document its people, nature and landscape. During his time in Brazil, Post made drawings and sketches of animals, which he probably used as studies for his paintings. Thirty-four of these drawings were recently discovered in the Noord-Hollands Archief. The archive has graciously made the digitised drawings available for re-use on Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedian-in-Residence Erfgoed Gelderland

The Wikimedian-in-Residence in Erfgoed Gelderland, which aims to provide small GLAMs with the knowledge and tools to get involved in the Wikimedia movement, has yielded its first results. As part of their training, staff and volunteers at the Flipje & Streekmuseum Tiel have uploaded a small batch of images from their collection to Wikimedia Commons. The process has been documented and will be part of a manual that will eventually also become available on Commons.

Linking Fotodugnad to Commons

In November 2016 Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage launched Fotodugnad platform for crowdsourcing location metadata for historic photographs (the platform is a new instance of Estonian platform Ajapaik.ee with the same purpose). At the GLAMwiki coordinators meeting in Paris in February Vahur Puik and Astrid Carlsen talked about the GLAM content mass upload to Wikimedia Commons from The National Archive done by Lars Jynge Alvik, and that images on Fotodugnad are already also on Wikimedia Commons. As a result Fotodugnad template was created on Wikimedia Commons and linked to ~1000 images that where already uploaded to Commons with the help of Riksbot from the National Archives of Norway. The bot also added geographical coordinates crowdsourced by users on Fotodugnad to the images on Commons.

Content donation from an artist Davorin Dinić

Old Niš shadows

A multimedia artist Davorin Dinić donated to Wikimedia Commons 42 amazing photos from his author’s collection Old Niš shadows. The photos presents the compilation of past and present time one of the oldest cities in Serbia - Niš.

Davorin Dinić is an award winning actor, composer and the lover of photography and the city of Niš. Two years ago, playing with the photos of the old Niš, he came to the idea to mix past and present. This photos had an amazing public impact and went viral on the social and the classic media.

We’ve met Mr. Dinić during the Wiki Loves Earth exhibition at the international jazz festival Nisville, and started the releasing negotiation. Davorin was excited to contribute:

“Wikipedia’s mission is noble and praiseworthy because of its enormous contribution to the free knowledge, which is Foundation’s mission. On the other hand, it keeps from oblivion national heritage which can be used by many generations ahead. I would like to live in the world where knowledge and information will be available to anyone, and art will be free and independent. Wikipedia is a project that aims to that goal and I’m honored to contribute to that idea.”

Serbian media was excited about this donation, and Mr. Dinić was interviewed several times about this cooperation. An interview with Davorin (by WMRS) can be read at Wikimedia Serbia’s blog (in Serbian).

One of the sessions of the European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting

Between January 15 and February 3 several libraries took part in the #1Lib1Ref campaign. Previously, the page about the campaign in Meta was translated into Spanish, and an introduction tutorial to Wikipedia was also translated, showing how to reference and how to use the Citation Hunt tool. Also, we announced the campaign on four mailing lists for librarians and archivists, around 5,000 receivers. At the end of the campaign, on the Spanish Wikipedia 240 edits were made on 155 pages by 58 users, with a total of 96,784 bytes modified.

European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting

Between Feburary 16 and 18 the 2nd European GLAMwiki Coordinators Meeting was hosted in Paris. The first two days, at the UNESCO headquarters, served to share experiences and GLAM initiatives, learning new tools and coordinate projects for this year, like Europeana 14-18. The last day were hosted, at the Wikimedia France headquarters, practical sessions around Wikidata, SPARQL Query Service and Wikisource. The sessions were followed through social media with the hashtag #GLAMwiki.

We are happy to learn that the Swedish project "This is my area" is one of three nominees for the Pedagogy Award of the year by FUISM, the Association for pedagogical development at Swedish museums. Wikimedia Sverige started this project in 2016 in partnership with Stockholm digital archives for schools, and the National heritage Board, to develop an open educational resources for local GLAMs and schools to collaborate and use Wikipedia and other open platforms to learn about local heritage and participate in the creation of free digital resources about the local area. 250 students in Stockholm joined the pilot with younger students contributing to Swedish Wikimini and secondary school students participated in the Wikipedia Education Program in Sweden. The winners will be announced in April 2017.

Connected Open Heritage

Under the Connected Open Heritage umbrella, we have been working on developing the software for ingesting and processing the Wiki Loves Monuments data before it can be uploaded to Wikidata. With over 1,4 million items in the database and a large variation in data quality from country to country, we found challenges in several areas, from cleaning up the data to accurately matching the content of various fields to existing Wikidata items. We have been focusing mainly on the datasets from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, which are first in line to be uploaded – in March.

Enlightenment comes to Wikidata

Two Oxford projects—Electronic Enlightenment and Oxford Research Archive—have shared data dumps, which Martin, the Oxford Wikimedian in Residence, and his new assistant Cory Salveson are cleaning up for import. The Oxford WIR is also working with Early Modern Letters Online: this project has already released its person identifiers as linked open data, so Martin has created some queries using these data which could be developed into front-ends for the database. Oxford University has a new GLAM strategy and a new GLAM programme manager who is interested in a pilot project to share data from the university's museums. Martin is also working with two groups of anthropologists who have had Wikipedia articles deleted or rejected, and has written advice for university staff on using Wikimedia projects for public engagement and on building simple visualisations with Wikidata.

The support of Wikimedia UK in partnership with the Welsh Government saw a new project launched in February, based on the lively Welsh language pop scene in Wales from the 1960s onwards. The Welsh language campaign called Wicipop encourages more people to post more articles and information about Welsh music on Wicipedia. Several sessions were held at the National Library of Wales, who are running the Project, and other venues, where people learnt how to go about editing Wicipedia Cymraeg. The Wicipop Project received a grant of £20,000 from the Welsh Government and so far (7 March 2017) has seen around 350 new articles created.

Jason Evans, WiR at the National Library of Wales said, "It's an opportunity for all the people of Wales to learn how to edit Wikipedia, add to the information we have about the pop music scene in Wales and enjoy a free meal in the bargain!"  Many new images were also released on open licence, mainly from Antena.

European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting

In mid-February, 30+ representatives from Wikimedia affiliate organisations met at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris for the second European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting, convened by Europeana. They share skills and best practices, coordinated projects, and consolidated connections between parts of our movement that work in parallel but often not together.

This meeting attracted twice the number of participants as the inaugural meeting of this series in 2015. The two day meeting (plus one day of workshops at the Wikimedia France office) attracted a diverse range of attendees - from Finland to Tunisia, Ireland to Macedonia; from delegated volunteers of User-groups to Executive Directors of Chapters; and from new community members and people with long experience in cultural partnership program. Guest presentations were also given by representatives of the European Space Agency, the Smithsonian Institution, Histropedia, as well as Europeana and UNESCO. Notably different from 2015, both geographic and thematic user groups were specifically invited to attend - such as the Bulgarian and Wikisource community User Groups. 50% of attendees were employees of Wikimedia affiliates/WMF, 8% were volunteer affiliate board members, and 25% volunteer community members designated to attend on behalf of their affiliate.

1/3 of all attendees were women (consistent with the 2015 event despite there being double the total number of attendees) and 92% of attendees reported as feeling completely comfortable to participate whenever they wished (the other 8% reported some difficulties with the speed/difficulty level of English language).

Various formats of presentation were included in the program. There was a very high level of active participation: 67% of all attendees gave a full presentation or led a workshop, 42% gave a "lightning-talk" and 38% self-reported as having give "many" comments in the discussion sections.

All in all, 92% of attendees said that the meeting was relevant/very relevant to their role, 96% rated the event as high/very high quality, and most importantly, 96% believe that this event series should be continued in 2019/20!

One of the principle activities February, was support of European GLAM Coordinators meeting. At the meeting, Alex provided updates on Structured Data on Commons and Wikicite, did a workshop examining the workflows for batch uploads on Commons, and a conversation about the skills that communities learning how to participate in GLAM need most. Paired with the wider workshops and learning from the meeting, the meeting felt very productive for understanding and learning about the work of various affiliates in the greater European community.

Before the meeting we had the opportunity to sit down with partnerships coordinator at the International Council of Museums, and talked to the staff at the ICOM about future collaboration. One area of interest was the possibility of developing, a open registry of museums using Wikidata. ICOM and a number of other heritage organizations (UNESCO for example), organize responses to natural disasters around heritage collections, and in certain parts of the world, where governments haven't collected this data, its hard to figure out which museums are in the region. We are exploring what it would mean to facilitate a campaign to invite the collection of this data through a Campaign like #1lib1ref .

Annual Planning, Programs Team at WMF, and Structured Commons

If you follow the Annual Planning process for the Wikimedia Foundation, you know how each year the foundation completes its planning process during the early part of the year, before going to community consultation. This year GLAM-Wiki will be part of the focus of both the Programs team and Structured Commons work.

We are going through the hiring process for several roles on the Structured Commons team, including the GLAM-Strategist role for the grant, as well as the Lead Programs Manager for the Wikimedia Foundation programs team. Take a look at the hiring page for Wikimedia and share the roles with folks you think would be a good fit.

Additionally, Structured Commons work is ramping up with initial work on backend infrastructure for the integration of Wikibase into Commons.
